The greatest violinist ever was:

i really couldn't say without being unfair. Hilary Hahn is a young artist who doesn't have as much experience as someone like Itzhak Perlman. They are all good violinists...and each have their strength and weaknesses

There are so many!

My personal favorite at the moment is Charles Castleman, mostly because he's a great guy; he has kept in touch with me by email and was very encouraging over the summer, when I was in a festival with a fifth grader who had been playing the violin longer than me.

Charles Castleman? Never heard of him...what area of the United States does he perform? Is he an international soloist?

I don't know...if there is somebody in this list who plays very musically and with a lot of fun, and he plays also other sorts of music...than that's the one I like best.

He's all over the world; he's not very pretty, so isn't as marketed as Joshua Bell or Hilary Han. In fact, he's got a twitch, and grey hair. But he's a great guy. He works at Eastman mostly now, and doesn't do as much performing.

"Prizewinner in the Tchaikowsky and Brussels competitions, Charles Castleman has been soloist with the orchestras of Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Hong Kong, Moscow, Mexico City, New York, San Francisco, Seoul and Shanghai."

Itzhak Perlman is by far the best..... have you ever actually seen him perform? he is AMAZING!!! I have seen live most of the people in the poll, but he beats them all hands down... ninja

hmm...i would have to disagree with you on that one. It is true that Itzhak has more EXPERIENCE than the others (simply because he is old), but i don't think he is a better violinist. His technique and method mastery are there, but he doesn't seem to play with the same passion as someone like Joshua Bell or Hilary Hahn. Each generation of violinists is getting younger and younger. Soloing isn't what it was like in Itzhak's time anymore...it is becoming more prestegious and competative.

Personally, I believe Paganini to be the greatest.
With his really awesome sixth finger and rumours spread about him, he created many of the techniques we have. If he hadn't invented them, I'd have to say my next choice would definately be Heifetz. 3nodding

Sadly, I have not. He came to Vegas last year or the year before, but I didn't know about it. Not that I can afford to go anyway, but I would have thought of something! stressed

My friend has seen "Ol' Itzhy" (as her parents know him as) perform and she described it as, and I quote:
"His fingers and bow played moved so quickly, that it was as if the violin would catch fire."
She also takes lessons from Kimberly Kennedy (DSO's second chair first violin).
I swear, she's got the best connections ever. Well, not ever, but . . . yeah. xd

i would only partially agree with you... i still think that Itzhak is the best, but it does seem that Joshua and Hilary have more of a passion (i am personally glad to have seen them all biggrin ) (and now for my calling card for this guild: the ninja) xd rofl ninja ninja ninja

*nods* okk. I can appreciate that.
I'm rather glad you don't agree with me, though. xd
