So I was bumming around the forums and I looked at some of the screenshots from the old famestar thing... take a gander at Rubella's picture:

Huh. I find it interesting that they use a blonde-haired blue-eyed character as a Jewish person.

That's cool she's Jewish, though? Not really sure what to think, especially since I don't follow the game at all to tell what she's like....

Huh. I've been playing zOMG and I never ran into that character... anyway, I notice that really huge SoD pendant she's got there. But she looks just about as Jewish as Lindsay Lohan does... perhaps you could post up something in the Site Feedback about it (even though this really isn't an SF issue)? I know that sometimes developing admins lurk in that forum.

Fix'd or I'm colourblind.

As far as zOMG goes; Rubella is a girl working on Rancher Bill's farm. His simpleton son Purvis has a crush on her, though she's not really interested. She seems like a nice hard working country girl.

As for the coloring.. well.. I'm blonde haired and blue eyed... granted, it's not the stereotypical personality or coloring... but do we really want to be stereotyped anyway?

What seems odd to me... I mean, some representation is nice. But I think that's the first hint of any official NPC being any particular religion. Usually for the holidays Gaia just does the commercial stuff and stays away from the actual religious stuff. So, it seems interesting for them to do that. Politically speaking. But then, last Valentines they came out and made it pretty blatantly obvious which NPCs are gay, bi, whatever. Maybe we'll start seeing more of this?

Somehow I doubt it.... too much political upheaval.

I wouldn't want to be stereotyped, either, but I just thought it was interesting.

Thinking about it more, I don't think it really matters much, then- I think I'm leaning towards approving because it means Gaia is actually being a bit more diverse for a change.

History of the Six-Pointed star:

The Six- pointed star began as just that; a bunch of lines put together to look pretty, like the five- pointed star of seven or eight and so on. It began as a secular symbol and was at one point even a Muslim symbol. It only really took on the Judaic symbolism when it appeared on King David's sheild according to lore, why we call it the Magen David. For centuries it was the unofficial Jewish symbol. In the Second Holocaust of the 1940's, it was used to identify Jews as fugitives by White or Yellow stars sewn to the arms of garments or on separate armbands. However, as the ultimate poetic justice, when it came time for the Jewish State of Israel to be created the Six- pointed "Jewish Star" was used on the flag. Thus it is widely known as a symbol of Judaism.

Yeah, I heard the Magen David only became the symbol of Judaism reletivly recently. Of course it existed before... but it wasn't as widely recognized as we know it today.

I also heard that there was some discussion that they didn't know for sure that the 6 pointed star *was* the magen david. I've heard some conflicting theories that it might have even been the 5 pointed star.

Different symbols are made to look pretty, but many are also taken from old pagan and folk traditions and superstitions. In the case of stars, the different points likely tie into numerology, sacred geometry... or just look pretty. smile

I'm not at home right now, but later on i'll post up an article on the history of the Magen David I have on my home computer.

First Holocaust:
1340's, Europe and Mediteranean area: Jews are blamed for the Black Plague and killed.

Sonia Levitin provides a great view of this life in her book, The Cure:

Quote:
Deviant. Rebellious. Abnormal. The Elders say Gemm 16884 is all these things, and that he is a threat to the utopian society in which he lives. The Elders give him one chance to save himself: He must undergo the mysterious and painful "cure," or he and his twin sister, Gemma, will be automatically recycled. Gemm chooses "the cure" and finds himself in the year 1348, at the onset of the Black Death. He is now Johannes, sixteen, living in Strasbourg--a town beset by anti-Semitism. Johannes struggles to hold on to his faith and family, his love for Margarite, his passion for music, and his belief in the goodness of human beings. But can the will of one boy change the world? Award-winning author Sonia Levitin weaves a chilling tale of a futuristic society colliding with the past--and delivers an unforgettable message about the recurring nature of history.

Ah, I thought I'd already dicussed this:

Lumanny
A teacher from ,my old Hebrew school once told us that she was the first Jew her College roommate had ever met. The roommate's first (innocent) question was "Where are your horns?"

Just tells you something about the lies spread about us. Who believes in the horn myth who wasn't born in the 14th Century?

Behatz posted many examples.

Lumanny
Oh.

The 14th Century reference was about the First Holocaust; Look up Sonia Levitin's 'The Cure' if you don't know about it.

But, that stereotype seriously lives? Though, I suppose if the First Holocaust spawned the rich stereotype as well and that lives today, then I shouldn't be surprised.

It's true. Look how many of these stereotypes were atarted then:

Lumanny
Yes, I know a little something about how most of the stereotypes got started:

-The Big Nose stereotype, if I am correct, is the result of a genetic disease the symptoms of which included a big nose. It plagued much of one line of Jews (Sephardic?) and let's just say the gentiles around were pretty impressionable.

-(The horn mtyth is below.)

-The rich stereotype was started during the first holocaust of the late 14th century in England and the Mediterranean area. The Jews were blamed for the Black Plague and thought to be devils. This is also where the horn myth comes in, though it may have already existed. The Jews were either killed or forced to become moneylenders. (The Christians would not lend money at interest because they believed it to be a sin called usury. Yet, the job was important for the economy so they made the surviving Jews do it.) The Jews had to charge exorbitant interest sometimes, though, just to put bread on the table in the environment they were in. They didn't like it, but they didn'yt want to starve to they charged a lot of interest when need be. This is why some people think Jews are greedy and rich, even today.

-The myth about Jews killing Christ was created at the beginning of Christianity as a way for the early Christians to secure followers and stop them from celbrating Jewish holidays at synagogues and the like.

Anti+Semitism&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us
Yet people remained desperate for something or someone to blame for the horror that overshadowed their lives. Anti-Semitism was no stranger to medieval Europe but it flourished during the Black Death. Jews were blamed for poisoning the water supply and were persecuted and murdered in terrible numbers.

That pretty much obliterates my paragraph earlier; Next time Divash is out I'll just let you do it; you're far better at it.
