They said that if you had a bad experience with something, you should always get up and brush off and try again. At least, thats what Emma had told him after the terrible experience of nearly being drowned by a homicidal kelpie after his first swimming lesson. Darsh wasn't so sure he wanted to get back into the water.
But after a careful inspection of the public pool to make sure that the boy from last time wasn't around he decided it was probably safe enough. A pair of vividly green water-wings adorned his upper arms, clashing nicely with his red swimming trunks. Emma had, once again, abandoned him at the kiddie pool and gone over to the hot tub to soak. Darsh narrowed his eyes, scanning the area again before cautiously dipping a toe into the water.

Carmel was going to learn how to float. She had decided that the first time she went swimming with her brother and took a nap on his belly as he floated on his back. Floating, she thought, was the epitome of laziness and perfection. Well, something like that. It was more of an innate understanding for one who worked so hard at being lazy.
At the moment she was in the kiddie pool, trying not to sink as she attempted to float without floaties. She had almost gotten it down when she was distracted by the very colorful boy entering the water.
He was really... bright, wasn't he?

It wasn't the water that unnerved him, it was the memory of almost being drowned. Darsh tried to remember that as he slid the rest of the way into the water. It was nice and cool and wet and pretty pleasant. He let an insolent smile cross his face as he patted at the water with his hands. There weren't a lot of kids here at this time of day. He looked them all over anyways to make sure once again that Vox wasn't there.
He wasn't. But there was a small girl just about his size who was bobbing about staring at him. Darsh grinned at her and waved, trying awkwardly to paddle over. He wasn't afraid of girls. He liked girls and generally felt comfortable around them. Then again, he liked boys too. Most of them. Did he know this girl? He didn't think so. Maybe she was just impressed by his prowess in the water and couldn't take her eyes off him.

"You is bright," Carmel said when he got close enough. "Makes eyes hurt." Which was amazingly rude, but honest. Of course she was used to strange skin colors, with her brother having so much of it, but blue was a bit more...
Clashing, to say the least. At least it was with all the other colors he was wearing! She, on the other hand, wore a cute pink one piece with a ruffled skirt and pictures of watermelon slices on it.

Darsh grinned proudly. Bright was good, as far as he was concerned. And so as far as he was concerned, she'd given him a compliment albeit a backhanded one. "You smell like chocolates." He responded. It was a nice smell, rising over the chlorine scent of the water. "I'm Darsh!" He added, puffing out his chest a bit. "Who're you?"

"Carmel," she said, taking the smelling like chocolate thing as a compliment as well. The problem was, though, that every time her brother hugged her his stomach would grumble. Now had she been a normal little girl she would have found that a bit terrifying, but as it was, it was just loud. "Not car-a-mel," she added, more out of habit than anything else.

It was a good thing she'd specified. He'd heard her name, but combined with the way she smelled Darsh probably would have mispronounced her name. "Carmel s'a pretty name." He decided. "You swim good?" Darsh was not such a great swimmer. Yet. But he was loathe to admit that to anyone, especially to himself.

"I float!" she said, although to be more precise, she sank. But she was working on it! "I taking classes!" For everything. She had dance classes, swimming classes, yoga classes--yes, yoga. Baby yoga had just been the start of it, people. She was best at the dance and yoga, but this wasn't the time to mention that, either.
"You take classes?" she asked him, since she hadn't met him in any of her other (waaay too many) classes yet.

Darsh shook his head. "Just swimming. But Auntie and daddy teaches me. I paint and auntie does yoga." Maybe she'd teach him yoga too. Then he could be a yoga master and Carmel would be terribly impressed with him! "I learning music too." He added. If an old set of pan-pipes that he carried around to blow on actually counted as music.

"Brother sings," she said. In other words, she couldn't carry a note if her life depended on it, but the only reason she realized that already was because she was used to Chris singing to her. And Chris (though she might be biased, not that she realized this yet) was the best singer in the world!
Nobody else had two voices, after all!

"Auntie makes arts." Darsh said, feeling like he should add to the familial bragging. He grinned crookedly at Carmel, flopping on his back in the water with a little splash. The water-wings helped him to float. "How come you take so many classes?"

"Mommy teaches," she said. "Is class of women in funny leotards and shorts." Jazzorcize, but she hadn't learned the word just yet. "So I here all the time anyway." In other words, she might as well be taking the classes. But she would have preferred sleeping to them, to be honest. Or going to see the fudge man again.
She liked the fudge man.

"Daddy teaches doggie-classes." He was pretty sure that wasn't something that kids could take, though. Mostly it was lots of grownups with shelter-dogs who didn't know how to behave. Darsh thought the idea of a well-behaved dog was ridiculous anyways. All dogs should be like the half-feral pack that lived on his property. They were more fun to play with.

"Doggie?" she repeated, looking a bit confused. She hadn't met a doggy yet, and she didn't know they had to be taught. Or maybe people were being taught to be doggies? That would be fun! She should take a class like that!
"So when are you actually going to teach them to swim?" Missy asked the instructor softly.
"Oh, at this age it's best if they learn to get used to it first. Besides, aren't they adorable in their little swimsuits?" Jasmine said happily. "And look, they're making friends!"
Missy sighed. She should have seen that coming.

"Do you have a doggie?" Darsh asked with renewed interest. "If you dont you should come to my daddy's work. He finds homes for animals that got left behind." Darsh was proud of Max's work, even though he didn't particularly like it when he was asked to help do anything other than playing with the animals at the pound. "We have lots of doggies at home." He added proudly.
