User ImageEvening wo uld be arriving shortly and Cowslip slipped from his burrow's mouth with a content grin on his maw. Wren was tucked away, dozing for the evening, and it was time for him to have some time alone.

Not that he disliked Wren's company, no, he loved her dearly and he could not ask for a better daughter. She wasn't his own flesh and blood, but he had vowed to care for her to the best of his ability and he looked forward to the day he would settle down with a doe of his own. Or have a fling, really. Either way, he wished to do as all creatures did and spread his likeness throughout the fields.

But a life mate did sound like a pleasant companion, so long as they meshed.

Regardless of the situation, he knew his responsibilities to the warren and would not shirk them. He would do his best to better the warren and the rabbits within it, including his own offspring (one day).

The bulky buck drifted through the runs and eventually emerged to a crisp, clear evening. The sun was sinking and the sky was a lovely blend of pastel pinks and blues. He blinked his silvery eyes, then went about making sure the way was clear.

Others were still out siflaying and he saw none of the Thousand, so he left the safety the warren offered and settled comfortably in a fresh patch of grasses.

Samphire was already at silflay, her jaws working slowly as she sat back on her haunches, a mouthful of grass being worked on before she swallowed it. She'd emerged from the warren a while before anyone else, her nose sniffing out the air before she emerged fully, ears always listening.

She enjoyed the quiet sometimes, the unhindered access to the juiciest of the grass blades but company was good as well as it meant an easier tme eating without having to stop all the time to check ones surroundings. She gave a brief glance up everytime another doe or buck hopped out into the evening air, and in doing so she noticed the bold black and white splashed buck. She didn't recall seeing him yet, but as she lived in a burrow that was on the very outskirts of the warren it wasn't surprising.

She hopped closer to him, her nose working as she drew in his scent, but she strove to appear casual, stopping to pluck out grass every so often.

The buck settled himself in a nice, fresh patch of rather delicious fresh shoots of grass and began grazing, plucking, chewing. Generally filling himself. He usually had to eat much more than other rabbits, what with being much larger and often burning away what he had already eaten quite quickly.

As always, the young, bulky buck was always on alert. His silver eyes took stock of which rabbits had decided to come up for late siflay and all his senses were on the look out for Elil. He might of been a human raised rabbit, but he had been learning quickly and knew better than to relax his senses, lest one of the Thousand catch him off guard.

That being said, he did notice the lovely doe that was casually making her way towards him. He did not know her and part of him wished to get to know her better. He did try to mingle with most of the other rabbits, though there were certainly a few that did not like him, what with his past in the hutches. Still, that wasn't something that deterred him from making acquaintances. Once the lovely, dusty furred doe was close enough to speak with, he offered a grin.

"Lovely evening, eh?"

She noticed that he seemed to carry himself quite well, seemed alert to his surroundings. Samphire stopped in the act of pulling up another length of grass as he looked directly at her with a friendly expression and spoke.

She radiated uncertainty for a moment as she was firstly unsure if he was actually adressing her, but unless he looked at one rabbit as he spoke to another she quickly dismissed that. She pulled an ear down and gave it a brief lick in a swiftly here and gone 'attack of nerves' motion then gave a soft smile and a nod.

'For silfay..and making acquaintances.' she added, her ears going back up as she relaxed again.

"You read my mind, I dare say." He chuckled, then swiftly picked another blade of grass and devoured it. His silver eyes studied the doe for a moment, taking in her appearance while his busy nose drank in her scent and stored her away into his memory.

"My name is Cowslip, fairly new here, to the warren. Might I ask who you are?" He inquired after a moment of silence, as the doe licked her ear in a familiar nervous gesture. He didn't intend to cause her feelings of doubt or worry and he did his best to remain the picture of sincere innocence. He intended no harm and only friendship towards her, especially at the moment. He was in need of a friend or two in this slightly new place. He had only been there a season or so, arriving well before the ill rabbits, but early enough to still feel slightly outnumbered and out of place. Sure, he was fitting in well, but still...

'I did?' Samphire's eyes widened as she wondered how she had done that..and then realised obviously he was joking! She giggled to herself feeling remarkably foolish.

'I guess I've still not been awake long enough.' she said, smiling at her silly mistake, her own nose drinking in how he smelled so that should they happen to bump into each in the gloom of the warren she would hopefully know him right away.

'Samphire, nice to meet you Cowslip.' she replied.
'You're new? Where did you come?' she asked, before remembering her manners.
'I mean, if you don't mind my asking.'

So it wasn't just that she was on the outskirts of warren life, he wasn't born here and that was the reason why she'd not seen him before.

He grinned broadly and tilted his head to the side as he observed the pleasantly polite doe. "Samphire? That's a lovely name."

The massive buck lifted a hind paw and briefly scratched at an annoying itch that had sprung up behind his black tipped ear, then settled himself on his paws comfortably and glanced upwards towards the stars. Naw, he didn't mind telling, especially if she couldn't tell about his birth just by glancing at him. His coat and size were remarkably unnatural for wild rabbits, but the scent of humans had long faded from his fur. He had been out in the wild with this warren long enough to at least mask that stentch and for that he was extremely thankful.

"I don't mind at all, really. Some rabbits aren't fond of me, though, 'cos of it. I'll give you that much warning." He chuckled as he sat back on his haunches.

"I was born and raised in a barn. I'm, eh, a former hutch rabbit, you see."

'Thanks.' Samphire gave herself a quick shake on the spot, daintily giving both her front paws a quick flick in the air before settling again.

She wasn't a very shrewd doe, but had thought that his colouration was a little odd. What she had thought of it wasn't very clear, only that it was an oddity.

'Oh why's that?' she interjected before he'd told her of his origins. She couldn't imagine what could make someone dislike this buck, he seemed amiable enough to her.

'Ohh..' and then she did nod as he told her of where he came from. That would explain his colouring..and what he had said of other rabbits. She knew that most held a general prejudice against human owned rabbits, thinking them weak and unable to live in the wild. He seemed to be thriving and she knew too much about feeling like an outsider to be another rabbit that would dislike him.

'So you escaped?'

"Nah, the humans decided I was better off running wild." He replied, his voice dripping with a friendly sarcasm as he groomed his paws and washed his face.

"Yeah, I managed to escape, fortunately. None of the other rabbits in the hutch would follow though. Just as well, I guess, 'cos we'd of been an easy-ish target for Elil. Still, can't help but to wonder how they're doing in the barn and all." He shifted himself into a comfortable resting position and swiveled his ears, listening intently to their surroundings.

"I haven't seen you in the runs or anything... Do you spend time there, or do you live further out?" There was a hint of curiosity to his voice as he asked her.

Samphire flicked her ears at his comment, but as it seemed to have been said in a not unkind manner she figured he was just politely teasing her for her silly questions.

'Do you feel a kind of guilt for being the only one to have escaped?' she asked, adding.
'I think you very brave, I couldn't imagine being born captive, nor if I would have the courage to get out of it.'

She shook her head;
'No..and yes.' she chuckled softly.
'My burrow is right on the outskirts of the warren, well I should say the burrow of my mother. I'm afraid I've be tarred by association and find it easier to be on the outside of warren life.'
