Approved by SouName: Lissa
Age: 16
Sex: Female
Sexual Orientation: Straight
Craft: Dolphineer
Rank: Apprentice
Physical Description: Lissa could easily be described as looking almost sexless. A tall girl with a lean, whipcord body, Lissa's skin is deeply tanned and her blonde hair, which she wears in a mass of thin braids, has been almost bleached white by the sun. She has a heart shaped face with wide set, pale gray-green eyes, a hawkish nose and a full mouth. A thin scar(caused by a wherry attack) goes across the left side of her face from forehead to cheek, just barely missing her left eye. While NOT considered attractive, a quiet vivacity and impishness shines in her eyes and flashes out when she laughs or smiles. She prefers clothing that is easy to move in and that won't get ruined by sea water.
Personality: Lissa is a seemingly quiet, thoughtful, polite and withdrawn girl. However, that is simply the facade she presents to her superiors and the rest of the world. In private, or with those she knows she can trust implicitly, she is fiercely independent, prefering to make her own way and learn her own lessons rather than rely on advice or hearsay. She is also possessed of a dry, dark sense of humor and plans to enjoy her life to the fullest. She's seen firsthand what people miss out on when they become too hidebound and she simply refuses to follow that path.
Her oldest friend in the Weyr is A'nt. A mutual interest in fire lizards combined with a mild dislike for chatter and shared talent in listening resulted in a somewhat unexpected friendship with the older candidate. Since he impressed, Lissa could not be prouder of her friend, though she has lately found herself envying his bond with his dragon, seeing it as far deeper and in a way more fulfilling than her bond with her dolphins.
However, in a sense, she considers her friendship with A'nt as a fluke of sorts and prefers to keep her distance emotionally from the other candidates and Weyr inhabitants, though she is careful to be friendly to everyone she interacts with on a daily basis. After all, there is no point in making friends OR enemies before she's ultimately sent back to the Dolphin Hall.
Though she keeps her distance from people, she feels no such compunction about the chores candidates are expected to help with and happily throws herself into her work, prefering more physical tasks to helping chop vegetables in the kitchen.
History: Born in one of the SeaHolds along Ista's coast, Lissa is the only child of Sea Crafters Faron and Misha. Often left alone while her parents were out fishing or repairing boats, Lissa learned quickly to manage for herself as her parents were often too preoccupied with how the fish were running to do more than give her a pat on the head in passing.
At the age of 10 Turns, she had her first encounter with dolphins when she went fishing with her parents off the coast of Ista Hold. Enchanted by what her father grumpily referred to as a "damned talking fish", she decided then and there that her future lay in working with the dolphins. Her parents, amused and somewhat disgusted by her desire to pursue such a trivial path nevertheless gave permission for her to be apprenticed at the nearby Dolphin Craft hall when she turned 12. Convinced that she would soon return and take up the path they had chosen, they were rather dismayed when Lissa not only did NOT return, but has only returned for the occasional Gather Day visit.
For the next two turns, Lissa happily worked with her dolphins, treating them as an extension of her own family. It was during this time that she impressed her green firelizard, Rini. She also received her facial scar when she heedlessly attempted to drive a hungry wherry from a storm beached infant dolphin. Then, the bronze dragons came on Search and Lissa was plucked from her chosen life to stand on the Hatching Ground.
She's lived two years within the Weyr now and she accepts it cheerfully, certain that once she's too old to stand, she can return completely to her precious dolphins.
Pets:
Rini, a Green firelizard. (I need to get her certed here)
Other/Talents: A strong swimmer and thanks to her association with the dolphins, she thinks she knows a bit more about the poisonous sea thorns and possible cures than the Weyr Healer. Mainly however, she teaches interested Weyrlings basic dolphin greetings.
