What was this? A free day from lessons, work and general weyr duties? Jessan about crowed at this. His merry blue eyes searched the Weyrbowl for any sort of amusements. It was past breakfast but maybe he could snag some bread and sliced meats, maybe a little soft cheese and go exploring the forest side of the Weyr. The former herder knew that he wasn't allowed to wander too far from Ista and as long as he stayed in sight, everything should be fine.

Cheered at this thought, he headed for the kitchens. It shouldn't be too hard to charm someone into making a basket for him. Jessan merely flashed a smile, made a couple of comments, and fifteen minutes later he had a small basket with bread, meats, cheese and even some sweet rolls. Now, holding tight to the basket, Jessan started to head across the Bowl. He learned a long time ago that as long as you looked like you had a purpose, no one would stop your way.

Whistling to himself at the luck he was having Jessan, for once, didn't notice the nice looking guy that was crossing his path until it was too late. Bumping into the boy, man? He wasn't sure, Jessan got ready to make apologies.

Kiriwar had been considering venturing towards the Bowl, having not gone in that direction yet. He hummed thoughtfully as he left the dining hall, munching on a meatroll and considering what he should do -- it should be allowed, and it would be nice to explore some place outside of the tunnels and lurk someplace other than his fall back, the ever-bustling Dining Hall. The Vintner sighed and licked his fingers clean, before nodding firmly. He would go to the--

"Oof!" He stumbled a little when someone crashed into him, immediately lifting his hands to steady himself and the other boy, looking him over in surprise with a few waves of his hair falling in his face. After a moment, he grinned crookedly to let the other know he was fine. "I didn't bump you too hard, did I?" he asked, worried brown eyes glancing down at the basket the other hand, making sure it hadn't spilled.

Hello handsome! Was Jessan's first thought though this time it stayed firmly in his mind. He did the quick once over and then grinned. Happily. Very happily. Checking the basket to make sure all the contents were fine, he realized this was too good of an opportunity to pass up.

"Not at all. I thought I bumped into you. The name is Jessan, former herder and candidate. I don't think I have seen you around before," He trailed off, leaving plenty of opportunity for the other to answer. Now that he had a MUCH better look at him, Jessan realized that the other male was probably close to his age in turns. Cute smile. Warm brown eyes.

That was the good and the bad thing about Jessan. Ever the flirt and goodhearted boy, he didn't turn anyone down. "Heading off somewhere?"

Kiriwar saw that look in the other's eyes and his smile broadened, his dimple appearing on his left cheek. He stepped a bit closer to the other, unable to resist. "I'm Kiriwar, candidate and Vintner apprentice," he greeted, meeting Jessan's gaze. "A pleasure to meet you, Jessan. I tend to wander a lot, so I'm something that needs to be caught, it seems."

"You know, I could ask the same of you," he said when asked if he was going somewhere, peering into the basket with a grin. "I was heading outside, possibly to the Bowl, just to get out and do some exploring."

"Apprentice Vintner? I must remember to take you along the next time I need a good...wine." He gave a pause for dramatic effect. Jessan looked around the Bowl and then nodded. "I was thinking about checking out the forest side of the Bowl. Haven't been that way yet."

Tapping the basket, Jessan gave a little way. "I know! You are bored. I have food. We both need something to do. Care to come exploring with me?"

Kiriwar just could not turn this down. He laughed softly and put a hand on hip, before nodding slightly. There was no way he could pass a chance up to have lunch with such a lovely boy."I think that would definitely be nice," he said, shifting his weight and offering to take the basket from Jessan. "Since you're inviting me along, let me carry it for you?"

To let Kiriwar carry the basket or to carry it himself? The basket was not at all heavy, so it wasn't like it would be a burden. Jessan nibbled on his lip slightly, trying to decide which way to go. Finally, he thought about how he would be in the reversed situation and held the basket out. "Let me know if it gets too heavy. Though I doubt it will."

He winked at this. Giving a slight bow, he waved in the direction of the far side of the bowl and the forested area. "After you."

Kiriwar was pleased, taking the basket from Jessan and peering out towards the forested area. "Tell me, Jessan, I've heard it's a touch... dangerous to wander this way. Is it true?" he asked, as he began to walk, heading in the direction that the other boy had waved him in, just glad to have company instead of having to walk around on his own.

Jessan thought about Kiriwar's question as they walked across the Bowl. As a herder, he had been used to being in larger groups so didn't worry too much about danger. There were the very rare felines, of course. Most of those were probably hunted out by the dragon riders and holders. A wrinkled marred his forehead as he replied. "I doubt Ista has felines. Tunnel snakes, everyone knows about those. Thorns..."

Kiriwar must not be from the area if he didn't know about the dangers of living in a tropic area. "Not from Ista, are you? Up north perhaps?"

Once, when he was small, Jessan had gone to Keroon to look at some beasts with his grandfather. Other than that, he hadn't been anywhere special.

Kiriwar watched head of them with curiosity, wondering how this adventure would turn out. He had never seen such things that Jessan was talking about -- oh, he had heard of them, but hearing and seeing were two different things, just like hearing of dragons and seeing them face to face. He glanced over at Jessan, before smiling crookedly.

"Yeah. I'm from near Benden, so this place is very new to me," he said softly, shrugging one shoulder and moving onwards. "What about you? Did you grow up here?"

Jessan shrugged carelessly. Benden was one of the most famous places to be from besides Ruatha. One of the reasons he hoped to Impress was so he would get the chance to explore and see Pern. How tiresome it was to be stuck in the same corner of the world. Of course, he said none of this outloud. "Sorta? I come from a family of herders. Twice a year, we went from the north part of the island to the south part. But it was the same route over and over."

Almost to the forest side and not stopped yet! Perfect! At this rate, they would be there and able to enjoy the whole day. Who knew, if they were lucky, they might even find a flit's nest to raid some eggs from. Fresh fruit. Maybe some...getting to know each other. The possibilities were endless. "So what did you do up North?"

Kiriwar shrugged as well, getting the vibe that being from the area around Benden was not such a big deal around this place. He continued walking, humming softly as they made their way towards... wherever Jessan planned on having this little picnic. He looked over at him curiously when he talked of his own family, before nodding once. "I understand..."

"I worked as a Vintner with my family and whatnot, nothing too important," he said simply, flashing a smile over at the other boy and shrugging one shoulder. "Nothing too major. Do you think we should stop soon?"

BY now, they were just outside the actual walls of the Weyr. There were several well beaten paths from wagons, carts, and folks in general. Stopping, Jessan looked around to see exactly where or which direction would be best to follow. There were several small streams heading downstream and away from the culdara.

"Um... I am not sure which way to head, actually. I don't want to get too far because I haven't been in this area before. Maybe we just find a place near the stream?" Jessan gave his best unsure but game face and started following the stream. Surely there would be a fellis tree or something that they could rest under.

Kiriwar looked around with fascination -- he had not been outside of the Weyr since he had arrived and was interested to see what things were like. He hummed quietly as he peered at their options, path-wise, before glancing over at Jessan. "Staying by the stream would probably be our best bet. It would be a good means to get back, should we end up lost."

He adjusted his hold on the basket he was carrying for the two of them, moving forward as he considered where they should sit, following after the other boy. "Do you see any place comfortable?"

Up ahead an ancient skybroom tree loomed above them. It's ancient trunk twisted in and around itself. Below it, several bushes flowered prettily and the ground leveled out. Turning to Kiriwar, Jessan smiled widely and held out his hand to take the basket.

"This spot is perfect. Let me have the basket and I will set up the meal for us. Then we can talk and maybe explore some more."
