It had been a few days since Rivener took that picture of himself and Xiu in the park. He'd printed it off that very day, but he didn't want to seem too eager to drop it off. It seemed... weird, to just show up the same day. So, wary of not looking like a doofus or what have you, the Scorpion had waited. Today was the day; nice and sunny, good for a walk (or a float).
Riv wandered through the park and then down the street Xiu had pointed out that time. Second street to the right, and then a bookstore. Simple enough, and before Riv knew it he found himself in front of a quaint little establishment. Tilting his head, he wondered if it was still an occasion for knocking... This was someone's home after all, only it was also a store. Hm. Well, seeing as the sign proclaimed "open" and the door was unlocked, Rivener simply let himself in.
Before going straight to the counter to see if he could spot Xiu, Rivener decided to wander the aisles for a while. This is where Xiu lived, then. No wonder he was so dignified and smart, surrounded by books like this. Had Xiu read any of these, the Sigel wondered as he picked up a tome from the rows, thumbing through the pages absently. Figured, he'd picked a book about astronomy. Pictures of stars, explanations of constellations. Rivener had read all this already on the internet, but maybe they'd have a good book on nebulas or something. Intently, forgetting his original purpose for visiting for an instant (besides, surely a worker would find him soon, be it Xiu or his mysterious guardian), Riv ran his clawed fingers over the spines of the books, looking for something perfect.

Xiu meanwhile was busy helping Hazeline sort through a new order of books somewhere in the back office and lifted his head when he had heard the door to the bookstore open. “A customer,” said Xiu turning to Hazeline.
“Hmm? Could you see to them then Xiu?” asked Hazeline not looking up from her checklist. “There’s a good lad. Mrs. Bediever has gone grocery shopping and Joshua has gone out with a bunch of his friends,”
“Of course, Hazeline,” said Xiu nodding before leaving the young woman to her paper work. Floating silently out of amongst the row of books, Xiu was surprised to see a familiar figure browsing through the shop’s wares.
“Rivener?” said Xiu smiling as he floated up to the scorpion raevan. “You came,” this time, there was a definite note of delight in the young frei’s voice as he greeted to older raevan. “I am so glad to see you,”

Rivener turned to look a the voice as though it was completely natural for Riv to float there looking at books. He smiled pleasantly to find that Xiu was the one to find him. "I'm glad to see you too, Xiu." He supposed he could keep looking for nebula books later with Xiu's help, so for now he turned from the shelves and floated closer to his friend. "Are you here alone again? I'd like to meet this guardian of yours if she's around. Ah, and I brought that picture of us that you wanted; here." The Scorpion reached into his pocket and pulled it out, smoothing it out a bit (it had curled slightly from being stuffed in the small pocket).
"Came out pretty good, although you look shy." Riv grinned, only teasing. "Nice place you have here, smells bookish and calm. You read?" With a tilt of his head Riv waited for the answer, poised to follow the younger Raevan if he floated away to guide the Scorpion to Hazeline.

“Alone? No, Hazeline’s doing some paperwork,” said Xiu with a smile before turning his attention towards the photo offered by the other raevan. At the other’s comment, Xiu coloured a little. “Can’t help it I guess,” said Xiu with a soft laugh. “After all, I was having my picture taken with a Sigel. Not many people could boast of such a feat now could they?”
Rivener had then asked if Xiu could read and the white frei nodded. “A little,” said Xiu indicating to a shelf containing some children’s stories. “ I’m afraid the other books, the ones marked as romance are a little beyond my understanding at the moment and Hazeline herself had not been too keen on allowing me down that aisle. Perhaps when I am older, she had told me,” said Xiu as he led the way towards the back office. Placing his hand onto the doorknob, Xiu turned around and gave Rivener an apologetic look. “It’s rather messy back here, especially when Hazeline’s sorting through the paperwork so umm…just bear with it for a moment? We’ll head to the living room upstairs once Hazeline is done,”
Saying so, the young frei then gave the door a few raps before turning the handle and entering. Beckoning Rivener to follow, Xiu turned around to face his guardian. “Hazeline, this is Rivener; the older raevan I told you about,” said Xiu in a slightly raised voice. Hazeline could be deaf to her surroundings sometimes when paperwork was involved.
“The older raevan?” asked Hazeline looking up and for few moments, stared in amazement at the scorpion Sigel. He certainly was an impressive specimen. Young, strong and with an aura of danger lurking about the Sigel, Hazeline could very well imagine women falling for him. In fact, the guardian herself was finding it rather hard to tear her eyes away from scorpion. “Pleased to meet you, Rivener isn’t it?” asked Hazeline as she got up and made her way towards the raevans. “Xiu has told me about you and I’m glad that we could meet face to face,” said Hazeline as she held out her hand.

Rivener followed silently all the way to the back room, smiling to himself with growing apprehension. What would this "Hazeline" be like, he wondered. Would she be a proper guardian figure? Somehow Riv doubted it. She was all too unconcerned about her charge, although Xiu had said that she at least cared what he read; not being able to go read the "romance novels" was at least one step in the proper direction.
As they paused by the door to the back room, Riv lifted an eyebrow. A mess? Hm. Surely it wasn't as bad as Riv was imagining, so he kept calm until the door opened. It revealed a room that was, thankfully, not all that messy. A little disorganized, yes, but there were no cartons of rotting food in the corner and unopened mail everywhere and basically the cliche "MESS" of movies. Among the mound of paperwork in the middle was a woman who turned her eyes up to look- more like stare at Rivener. The Scorpion couldn't hide the small smirk, enjoying the attention.
As Hazeline got up and offered her hand, Rivener took it and shook it in greeting, although he wasn't as pleased as she was, apparently. "Yes, it's Rivener. And you are Hazeline, then? Xiu has told me a bit about YOU, too. You're damned lucky I wasn't some weirdo scientist, that time I met Xiu. Just letting him go out like that at his age is dangerous." Riv frowned, instantly stating his disapproval calmly, in the hopes they could get over this. Maybe Hazeline's reasoning for doing it was fine, but Riv had seen enough people get hurt and kidnapped and harmed; he knew how bad it could get out there in the world, and poor Xiu was all alone with no discernible power except to see harmful intent. Surely there were ways around that...
"I don't mean to be rude or start a fight, but you have to be more mindful of Xiu. I've seen other Raevans taken away from their guardians when they were being ignored a little too much. He's just a child, you know."

At Rivener’s words, both guardian and frei gave Rivener a surprised look with Hazeline’s quickly taking on a look of someone caught doing something bad and Xiu looking at Rivener with a small frown. It was evident that the white frei did not approve of having his guardian reprimanded by Rivener. In fact, Xiu had been proud of his guardian and was hoping for the Sigel’s approval. A slight flick of his wings was all that was seen from Xiu as he eyed the other keenly; blue eyes watchful should his guardian be harmed; physically or otherwise.
Hazeline on the other hand was looking thoroughly ashamed of herself; having never been scolded ofen even when she was a child. A stern look from her teacher back then was enough to send the young Hazeline crying. “I am sorry…,” said Hazeline in a quiet voice. “ But…well…yes, yes. I guess I should have known better,” said Hazeline looking at Xiu who immediately gave his guardian a concerned look. Shaking her head slightly, Hazeline ran a hand through her hair. “Sometimes, I keep forgetting that Xiu is not even a year old and well…he just seemed so…capable but, that would be just excuses,”
How the times have changed thought Hazeline to herself as she remembered the times when she was younger. There were no restrictions back then. You just…practically played anywhere you fancied and the adults worried less about their children disappearing from the streets and worried more about stray cats running off with the fish. But that was in the past. The present was much more dangerous. Children were disappearing off the streets everyday and here she was letting Xiu out…
“Understood,” said Hazeline nodding to Rivener. “I would hate it if Xiu was taken away from me. He is part of my family now and to have him taken away…I’d much rather have one of my kidneys removed, or something….Thank you Rivener for the warning in advance..,”

The Scorpion had been watching Hazeline intently, completely missing the small show of disapproval from the Raevan they were currently discussing. Red eyes focused singularly on the woman, frowning slightly as he waited for a reply.
Contrite, the guardian apologized. Rivener's face relaxed as she went on... She was nice, Riv decided. She'd obviously not meant wrong by letting Xiu wander around, she obviously cared for him very much. He was NOT neglected. It very clearly just sounded as though Hazeline hadn't thought she was doing anything wrong at all. Sighing, Riv smiled slightly and floated forward to give the woman a small hug. He began speaking again as he floated back to a regular distance, seeming much more pleased with the meeting now.
"I can tell you love him very much, I'm glad. At first I was worried Xiu's guardian didn't care for him, but you obviously do. I'm pleased to meet you too, then, Hazeline. I'm sorry if I came on too strong. My own guardian's girlfriend was kidnapped a while ago, even though SHE seemed quite capable and had a Raevan with her that could have killed anyone who laid hands on her... It just goes to show that it's dangerous out there. I was worried for Xiu, that's all."
Well, Chloe was an EX-girlfriend, but Riv figured that wasn't the important part of that admission. Finally he turned red eyes to Xiu and smiled. "She seems nice, your guardian. Good for you."

Hazeline was surprised by the hug given by the Sigel and managed a small smile. She was still rather shaken by the encounter with the scorpion Raevan despite him seeming to calm down. The tension in the air was definitely lesser than what it had been a moment ago. “No harm done Rivener, in fact, you’d have probably saved us a ton,” said Hazeline stepping away from the Sigel as he floated back and positioning herself beside a silent Xiu. Hazeline had been worried about Xiu during conversation with Rivener as the frei had taken on similar look to the one he had given San when San had fingered a gun in Hazeline’s presence. The change in expression, however subtle should be looked out for if trouble was to be avoided. Although technically speaking, Hazeline herself was in the dark regarding Xiu’s abilities.
Seeing that there was no longer a visible threat to his guardian, Xiu allowed himself to relax a little and nodded in response to Rivener’s statement. “I do not wish to find myself in anyone else’s care,” said Xiu quietly. “ Hazeline is my guardian and my guardian she shall always be,”
Upon hearing Xiu’s word, Hazeline felt a slight blush creeping up her cheeks. “W-well…let’s not stand around here shall we?” asked Hazeline as she made her way to the staircase leading to the upper floors. “I’m sure we could all do with some refreshment; well…perhaps with the exception of Xiu. He does not eat solid food I’m afraid,’
“Afraid not Hazeline,” said Xiu with a smile before turning to look at Rivener when his guardian had made her way up the stairs. “You should have told me of your plans Rivener. I would have put your worries to rest. Hazeline and I have both met a raevan called Vyn and we have heard her story. We do not plan on repeating that mistake.”

Rivener smiled at the interaction between guardian and Raevan; they got along very well. Seems Rivener had nothing to worry about here. Although, why should he feel like he had a responsibility? ...Maybe being a Sigel was getting to his head, or the fact that he was older than the majority of Raevans he met nowadays? Riv couldn't help but feel like he should make sure his kin was taken care of properly. Hm, he was turning into a rather nosy person.
As they headed up the stairs, Hazeline leading the way ahead, Xiu turned to speak to Rivener in what sounded like less-than-pleased tones. Rebuking Rivener for having said that to Xiu's guardian. One dark eyebrow lifted over an amused ruby eye. It almost seemed like Xiu was being Hazeline's guardian about as much as Hazeline was being Xiu's.
"If I'd told you of my plans, Xiu, it would have done no good at all. I had to hear it from HER, I had to see how SHE reacted. I wanted to make sure she cared for you as much as she should. I'm sorry if that upset you, but it was for the greater good." Mentioning Vyn made Rivener sigh and he glanced aside. "Yes, poor Vyn. No one should have to go through that, but it really was for the best. Her previous guardian was quite... neglectful. Vyn should have blossomed so much brighter if she hadn't been left alone so much as a newborn... She's older than I am, you know that? But she didn't grow to Sigel yet. Neither has Sevilin. Both of them were re-homed... It really does mess with Raevan health to be neglected, so I really only wanted to make sure this wasn't happening to you. Alright? Forgive me?" Riv smiled apologetically after his long spiel, tilting his head.

“I had not known that,” replied Xiu, visibly shocked that Vyn was older than Rivener but at the mention of Sevilin’s name, the white raevan gave Rivener a surprised stare. He had never met Sevilin before but to hear that the raevan called Sevilin was rehomed was disheartening news. Was it truly that simple for a raevan to be rehomed? The white frei flicked his wings uneasily. “I’m sorry Rivener. I should not have brought that up,” said Xiu before turning his attention towards the stairs. A clatter of crockery could be heard as Hazeline tried her best to remember where Mrs. Bediever had kept the teapot.
“And as to being forgiven, I guess that could be managed,” said the frei with a smile. “Truly. I have never seen Hazeline blush so then when you had given her a hug. Is that an inborn skill of yours or does that come with the developement of your stomach?”

Rivener's smile softened from apologetic to gentle as Xiu spoke. "It's okay, you didn't know. And I do hope you won't dislike me too much for putting Hazeline on the spot."
The mention of Rivener's hugs being able to make women blush made the Scorpion laugh out loud just as the two Raevans entered the living quarters. "I don't know if it's an inborn skill or stomach-related. Hahah. It's probably because I'm attractive and people like to touch me?" Alright, that sounded a little too vain so Rivener played it off with a shrug. "Or maybe Hazeline doesn't get many hugs? Speaking of which, does she need any help?"
The clattering sounds made Riv glance around for the woman, seeking her out.

“I will live,” replied Xiu in reply to Rivener’s statement about putting Hazeline on the spot. At Rivener’s suggestion on helping Hazeline however, Xiu looked horrified. “No, we should not. Definitely should not,” said Xiu shaking his head.
“It’s a sort of unspoken rule here. Mrs. Bediever reigns supreme over the kitchen and to ummm…do what Hazeline is doing now would incur her wrath. It is best that if…someone has to go down, that someone does not drag another with them,” said Xiu nodding in earnest. “Honestly, Mrs.Bediever could scare the pants off almost anyone,”
As if on cue, a crash followed by a tinkle of china could be heard before a string of not-so-horrible curses drifted by. A few seconds later a sheepish looking Hazeline could be seen from the kitchen’s doorway. “Whoops. Broke the teapot,” said Hazeline with a look that clearly said I’m doomed. “Perhaps you could take Rivener to browse the bookstore while I find another teapot? I’m sure we have a spare somewhere. Oh and Rivener, if any book catches your fancy, feel free to have it? Consider it as…a sort of gift for taking the trouble to worry over Xiu,”
“Thank you, Hazeline,” said Xiu before turning to Rivener. “Shall we go?”

Rivener blinked in confusion for a moment at Xiu's reaction to a simple offer to help his guardian. He didn't like being in the kitchen with Hazeline or something? But ah, an explanation soon followed that made Riv chuckle. "Okay... Now I'm curious to meet this Mrs Bediever. Is she an employee? The owner? Your guardian's relative? ...Seems odd to fear her so much, she's just a lady isn't she? Or maybe she's got some kind of horribly strong grip, or something?" Rivener laughed as his own wonderings got a little out of hand.
An instant later Hazeline appeared, announcing that the racket they'd heard moments prior was the death knell of a teapot. And quite possibly the death knell of Hazeline herself, by the expression she was wearing. The Scorpion quirked his eyebrows, starting to seem less amused by all this fearful behavior. He turned and followed Xiu back into the bookstore with a slight nod before turning a concerned frown to the white frei.
"Is that really gonna be alright? I didn't want to cause such trouble... if it was this difficult to make tea we could have just gone out to get some at a store or something."

Xiu shook his head. “She’s a little more than a housekeeper but it is…a little complicated. Hazeline and Joshua love her though and…she loves them too,” said Xiu slowly as he tried to piece together the relationship between Hazeline, Joshua and Mrs. Bediever.
At Rivener’s question about the housekeeper being ‘just a lady’, Xiu had to smile. “Have you heard of the term ‘a whirlwind of a person’? Mrs. Bediever is something like that except the whirlwind is now squeezed into the body of a slightly smallish old woman with a temper as unpredictable as the weather. She is…alright I guess. We have … learnt to live with each other,” said Xiu with a slow nod. It was probably best not to tell the Sigel that Mrs. Bediever was initially not too fond of the white haired frei believing him to be the worst possible mixture of science and religion around. The frei’s blue eyes however, were thoughtful and reflective as he spoke about the housekeeper.
It was then that the teapot incident happened and as he let the way down to the bookstore, Xiu nodded in response to the Sigel’s question. “Yes, do not worry Rivener. I guess living with all these books around; one could get a little melodramatic at times. Perhaps it is to counter what most people would call a “boring” life,”
“But I am happy here though,” added Xiu quickly; fearing that the Sigel would then start having a new worry about him. “It is…a good place as any to learn,”
“So,” said Xiu, shifting the topic of conversation to another “I saw you browsing the store earlier. Do you have any particular book in mind Rivener?”
