He lay on his belly in the sand, grooming. He didn't often groom, but he was beginning to elarn that if he didn't do it himself, his mother would - and that was far more embarrassing. Besides, it wasn't as if he had to spend hours doing it. A quick once over and he looked somewhat presentable.

Currently, he was washing a foreleg - holding it stretched out across the sand. Hooked, ebony claws sank into the golden sea, carving into it every time his paw moved.

He paused, lifted his white-masked face and glanced around - almost lazily. He had to admit he liked it here. He liked the lions, liked their strength. But he also knew it had to end and he would end it. Shame really...such a waste.

With a smile, he returned to his grooming, working out a knot with his teeth.

Nearby and getting closer was a cub. A cub and a snake, actually.

But the snake wasn't really willingly approaching. Said cub had it grasped in her mouth, teeth grabbing just behind its head, incapacitating it from an attack. But it was still very alive and wriggling, wrapping itself around her neck, which actually amused Kal. For started, this was a sand snake, not a constrictor. Though the wrapping provided some tightness, it was harmless.

Her biggest worry would be the snake slipping free and biting her, but the entertainment the snake provided was currently outweighing the risk of death. Besides, if it tried to wriggle free she'd just bite down and kill it. Easy as that.

But, perhaps she'd find another form of entertainment. Kalama perked her ears, spotting a darker spot in the sands. Ooh, another firekin. Not much older than her, actually. Hm, lets walk over and check them out.

It's not that she was a social butterfly, but running into other pride members was okay sometimes. She was in the mood.

An ear lifted at her approach and after a moment of struggling to free his fur of the knot, he lifted his head. He moved it slowly, his eyes scanning the sands until he found the source of the sound of approaching paws.

A female cub.

He curled a lip for a moment, wondering whether she was heading towards him or going elsewhere. Maybe she'd simply pass by and leave him be. Or maybe not. Was he willing to risk that chance? Should he get up now and move off before he had a chance to find out? Possibly, but then again he was comfortable where he was and he'd be damned if he let a female chase him out of his spot.

He gave a little growl and went back to grooming his toes.

Kal quirked a brow in amusement at the other firekin's response. Growling, already? My, my. You know, she might have just let him be. But now that he had already started giving off an attitude, she figured she'd heckle him a bit.

But, she couldn't exactly bother anyone if she couldn't talk. She glanced downwards towards the snake in her jaws, and decided that this time she'd let it live. Kal shrugged the snake loose from her neck, then swung it around a little bit before eventually letting it go, tossing it a distance away. Despite riled up, the snake was quick to take this break and slither off.

"So, whats your name? " She asked, flopping onto the floor and eying the older male.

And what was that she had round her neck!?

He was watching from the corner of his eye as the girl shrugged the snake free and flung it away from her. He grimaced a little. Disgusting things, snakes were, dangerous too. What was she doing playing with her life like that? Or could it be the snake was her friend? Or maybe it was half dead anyway and couldn't remember how to bite.

And then she was there, flopping down close by. The door for escape closed shut.

He looked up and stared at her, his blue eyes icy in that white mask of his. "Rowtag." He replied gruffly. "Yours?" He wasn't sure about this one. Was she so fearless that she didn't mind being put into harm's way?

"You shouldn't play with snakes, you know. Not unless you want to end up dead."

Okay, he'd replied nice and easy. So she figured she would be 'nice' for now. "Kalama. " She replied, while quietly repeating his name in her mind. Rowtag. Fun name, actually. She had no idea what it meant, but didn't honestly care about that.

"I'm not scared. They can't kill me if they don't bite me. " She shrugged. "Besides, if I do end up dead, I'll be past the point of caring. " Because she'd be dead anyway, thus rather incapable of caring about what had happened. Or, thats how Kal thought of things. Not that the cub had a death wish, she took precautions to avoid getting herself killed, but she didn't avoid the danger all together. She was going to end up dead anyway, after all.

In the meantime, walking on the edge gave off a delicious thrill she rather enjoyed.

He nodded, filing her name away into his memory. He liked to remember names of his kin, even if this one wasn't from the Safi. Besides, she was an odd one and that seemed to sit well with him. He was beginning to think that girls in general were odd. Some of his sisters were very odd indeed - no names mentioned, of course.

He frowned a little. "You almost sound like you don't care about dying." He wrinkled his snout a little. Dying was the one thing that Rowtag was scared of. Dying before he got a chance to grow big and strong. Dying before he got to take his revenge. Dying before he got a chance to prove that his spirit hadn't been tamed by law and order.

He dug his claws into the sand. "One fights better when they fight for survival. Maybe you should try being carful sometime." He paused, blinked and glanced off in the direction the snake had gone.

"Would you not rather risk your life in battle than playing with a snake, Kalama?"

She perked her ears. "I don't try to get killed. I avoid letting the snake bite me because of that result. " She paused, considering his question a bit.

"Death in a battle is death nonetheless. Past the point that I'm dead, nothing else matters to me. I'll just be remembered more nicely if I died a brave soldier in battle than as that foolish cub that played with snakes. But I won't care about how I'm remembered after my death. " Kalama shrugged.

"I care about how I live. Screwing with snakes keeps me entertained and hones my skills. So I do that. If I live, I'll just end up stronger. " The red cub both feared and didn't fear death. Avoiding it could be considered fearing it, but she wasn't afraid because once she's dead it's done, and it was coming anyway. She feared losing a fight and coming out crippled more than coming out dead.

He laughed. He actually laughed. An odd occurane for the youth, to find amusement, to find anything worth laughing at in day to day activities. And yet here it was. Amusement in the words of this odd little character. Wasn't she an interesting one indeed?

He paused, let his blue eyes return to her face, curiousity evident. "Aren't you a funny one?" He stood and shook the sand from his pelt. "Yes, I think you'll grow up strong." He smiled slightly and glanced around him.

"I think I'm starting to understand now, why the desert rears such strong lions. Why we are better than any lion and pride that lives in the outside. I am starting to see why the Firekin love the desert so. I never really understood it until just then, when you spoke of snakes." He paused. "But I'm different. I seek life, but want death in battle. I want to be remembered. I want my name feared, even after my bones are turned to dust."
