My DM IRL will sometimes allow my group to trade a proficiency for a bonus feat during character creation. One example is giving up simple weapon proficiency for a proficiency with an exotic weapon.
However, for my most recent character, a Bard, I traded Shield Proficiency and the extra Weapon Proficiency, for an Exotic Weapon Proficiency.
Do any of you allow such trades between feats/features/proficiencies? Does anyone have more alternative class features/proficiencies?

Hmm...in all the campaigns and one shots I've been in, I've never had alternates. Then again, we run V4, so getting weapon proficiencies is fairly easy.

Yes, but I have ruled that you must be proficient in a weapon type 1 category lower in order to have a proficiency.
However the NPCs do this more than the PCs, so...
