Ceylith snorted softly and tossed her head a little. Should we be down here, C’ren? After what happened to Kalli, I’m not comfortable here… The Green and her rider were by the lake. After the near drowning of a new Greenrider---Kallista----it was mostly abandoned. Which was exactly why C’ren wanted to be here, Ceylith knew. Also, the whole drowning incident had interrupted the adult Green’s own bath. Not that this made Ceylith happy to be here.

Kallista was one of her Candidates, one of the ones she had Searched. It was very emotionally wrenching to realize that she had almost died here… and Astarteth too, actually, since her life was bound to her rider’s. The Green looked down at the water’s edge now then back at her rider, wondering if something similar could happen to Hers. What would she do if C’ren fell down in the water and didn’t get up?

But, her rider was not a man to dwell on emotional ‘what if’ statements. All he knew was that soapsand still clung to Ceylith’s hide and it was getting everywhere and, shard it all, he was tired of putting on a clean shirt and feeling the grains against his skin! He gave Ceylith what is known as an ‘old-fashioned look’. Actually, it was more of a glower, because his patience with just about everything was running low at the moment. It had been an emotional week already and Ceylith’s ‘time’ was coming and all…

And, to top it all off, it was too sharding hot out today. The Ista sun was feeling particularly cheerful----or perhaps malicious was a better word----and was generously donating heat today. Heat waves rose off the ground like grass. Actually, more commonly than grass, since the Weyr was positively without vegetation. This heat necessitated C’ren being shirtless, which added another layer of annoyance frosting to top off his anger cakes.

Not that he could stay mad at his dragon for long. She gave him such a look of wounded innocence that it practically strangled C’ren’s heart. …Ceylith, get in the water already. Please? Armed with his trusty brushes and buckets of soapsand, C’ren was ready to wash someone’s dragon and if it wasn’t Ceylith, he knew she’d be jealous.

Thankfully, she stepped into the water eventually, and C’ren soon followed. Now this was bliss. Just him and his dragon, peacefully cleaning. He let out a sigh and enjoyed the brief few moments of solitude.

Dimeth also need a bath, and receiving a bath was one of the few things he didn't complain about. He liked the feeling of warm water running over his hide. Or cold water. Both felt simply marvelous. And the dried hide that flaked away, replaced by soothing oil... sheer bliss! The blue dragon was almost cheerful, in preparation for his bath. L'mel thought he should mark it on a calender, as an event most rare and wonderful. 'Today Dimeth was in a good mood'.

Mine, there is another dragon there already. I don't want to share the water. They will get it all dirty and I will get sick and die. And the good mood was over. Well, at least L'mel had had five minutes of peace, where even Accident was quiet and sleeping in his bed.

Don't be ridiculous Dimeth. You can't get sick just from dirty water. Besides, that green doesn't look sick. Quite the opposite, actually. Say... why don't you go down and make nice? There was a certain glow to Ceylith's hide that suggested to the wise that she was nearing her time. Quite interesting. It had been a while since L'mel had engaged in acts pertaining to Flight. They were just all the more delicious, really.

With obvious reluctance, Dimeth landed on the shore, beating his wings as he settled down, wading cautiously into the water, surveying everything before addressing Ceylith in a terse, formal tone. I am Dimeth was all he offered.

L'mel, by contrast, fair bounded into the water where the greenrider was, waving enthusiastically. "Hello! Bluerider L'mel here. Beautiful day, isn't it?"

Well, it had been a good day. When the Blue slowly waded into the water, C’ren had a dark feeling that his good mood had ended. Inwardly, he hoped that the other dragon would sidle away at least a few dragonlengths, especially since there was a certain movement in the dragon that suggested reluctance, but no. Apparently not. Or someone was egging him on… C’ren’s fears were answered by a single name. Who didn’t know about L’mel? Nan and Elae absolutely adored him, for providing so many fun rumors.

Although, in all honesty, the rumors did say he was pretty good. If C’ren absolutely had to have sex with someone it might as well be with someone good. That was just pragmatism.

“Greenrider C’ren. This is Ceylith.” … shard it all, he wished he was better at this whole ‘small-talk-thing’. He looked up warily at the sky, as if half expecting it to suddenly start raining at any moment, just to prove everyone wrong. “Well… it’s weather.” You can’t really say much more about it than that, he always figured. “You’re exceedingly cheerful today. Good news?”

Aww… why did C’ren have to get the cheerful one? Ceylith was momentarily disappointed by the distinct lack of happiness in Dimeth, but that didn’t dissuade her. I’m Ceylith. Aren’t baths wonderful? I’m pleased to see another dragon here; I was worried that no one else would be here. And she did so hate being alone for long. Being with C’ren didn’t really count.

Time for ambivalence! On one hand, she wasn’t being cleaned any more. On the other hand, C’ren was actually being social. Hmm… to interrupt or not to interrupt…

Dimeth gazed dolefully at Ceylith. Great. She had the personality of his rider. Maybe he could switch bondeds. At least her human seemed sane. Dimeth did not want to make friends with Ceylith, and he especially did not want to take advantage of her no doubt rampant hormones. It was swiftly proving to be a battle of wills between dragon and rider, and one in which Dimeth almost always inevitably lost.

At least be polite! L'mel scolded silently and fiercely to his dragon. He would probably never be able to make Dimeth be as sociable and cheerful as he himself was, but he could make his blue act polite, shard it!

The water is nice. I prefer bathing alone. And there went Dimeth's attempt at being polite. It was a half-hearted attempt, and Dimeth plainly wasn't going to be trying to do anything more.

My rider will try and get yours up to our weyr. Please don't let him. Dimeth really did not want to deal with that right now. He just wanted a bath, and that would never happen so long as L'mel was focused utterly on the greenrider.

Speaking of which... L'mel would not be intimidated by a rider who didn't seem exactly to see him. He liked to get what he wanted- some called it a flaw. L'mel called it drive. Never mind that it was all pure sex drive. That was still a form of drive, right? He wasn't overtly ambitious, unless you counted wanting to be the most bedded man in the Weyr.

"Oh, no, it's just this weather. It's perfection. Beautiful day, beautiful surroundings..." L'mel let his voice trail off slightly, making it clear what exactly he was regarding as beautiful: C'ren. "Your dragon is lovely. I apologize in advance for Dimeth. He's just intimidated by beauty." It never hurt to compliment the dragon. That was the way to a rider's... bed, after all!

Thankfully, Ceylith had practice with dealing with someone who was less than polite. Living with C’ren was a master’s course unto itself. And, in cases like these, she had found the best thing to do was to say nothing at all. After all, if the other individual didn’t want to talk, what could she do? Admittedly, she was a little put out by the lack of interest (come on… she was about to Rise and here was someone utterly uninterested? That had to hurt her self-esteem), but she would get over it.

…your rider doesn’t know C’ren yet, does he? she asked eventually, after mulling over possible reasons why anyone would try to lure C’ren into their weyr. There were only really two reasons: either someone wanted to put his neurosis to use and make him clean up something or… well… they wanted to make a new mess. She snorted again, showing exactly what she thought of the idea. No matter. Yours can surely find someone else for fun. He can’t have Mine. He hasn’t finished bathing me yet. Yours will surely get bored soon.

The very indignity of it! Actually, speaking of bathing… Ceylith was normally nice and patient, but this was important. She nudged the brush once more, to call C’ren’s attention back to her. Still, she had to admit… it was a good sign that L’mel appreciated beauty when he saw it.

C’ren merely gave L’mel a flat stare, one that could probably be used as a countertop in emergency situations. “…Of course he is.” While Ceylith was busy admitting to herself that at least L’mel could appreciate beauty when he saw it, a similar thought was going through C’ren’s mind. Any hint that the Bluerider actually thought C’ren was also beautiful went right over his head, mostly because the Greenrider had gone back to rubbing the brush across Ceylith’s hide. “Yes. She is gorgeous. Now, if only I was stupid enough to not realize what you’re trying here…”

“Out of curiosity, does that ever actually work? Or does it just work on those with more beauty than intelligence? And, please, don’t insult me by trying an injured innocence act. I’m not in the mood to deal with it.”

L'mel was immediately put off by C'ren. He... he had caught on? No! He wanted someone to warm his bed tonight, but it looked as though that wasn't happening. L'mel did not enjoy being rejected. It did not create warm, fuzzy feelings in him.

Clearly sulking now, L'mel responded to C'ren with slumped shoulders. Maybe he could sort of get a pity shag? There was nothing wrong with a pity shag. He had been dry so long- nearly two weeks now! That was a very, very long time in L'mel land. It really was a miracle that the man had no children yet.

"It works sometimes. The women seem to fall for it anyway. Sometimes the men do too. Especially when their dragon is so obviously... glowing with anticipation." L'mel looked askance at Ceylith once more, again noting the subtle tint to her hide. Didn't this man have any sway-able hormones? Maybe he was still stuck in the grumpy stage of being proddy. If only L'mel knew.

This isn't worth it. Ceylith says that hers is normally like this... or she sort of said it. We can find someone else. Let's go before we get in trouble. Dimeth whined slightly, making a piteous noise that should have melted the hardest of hearts... If only he hadn't used it on L'mel one too many times. It did nothing to the bluerider now, except mildly annoy him and make him attempt to push away Dimeth's large, wedge shaped head. He didn't have the time to deal with that nonsense.

Hm. So far, C’ren hadn’t threatened the other man. Ceylith wasn’t certain if this was a good sign or not. On one hand, it could mean he was being pleasant today. On the other hand, it could mean he was actually considering L’mel. Not threatening someone was practically flirting for him.

Well, not always… Ceylith’s honest nature forced her to say this. I’m told he’s quite pleasant during Flights. But you probably shouldn’t let yours know about that. Also, he’s just had a bad few days. Actually… now that she thought about it, having some ‘company’ would probably do C’ren some good. At least then he’d sulk at someone else instead of just plain sulking.

Well, anything would clearly have to wait until the bathing was done. She was not going to let anyone take Hers away until later. So there.

Aww… looks like someone had his feelings hurt. And C’ren hadn’t even been trying. It wasn’t that he was uninterested. He was just vaguely insulted by the lame come-on. Also, the man had a mind like a flow chart: Are you interested in sleeping with someone? Yes or no? If no, then go away. If yes, then is it JUST sleeping? If yes, then just say it. If you want more, try flirting. Very, very simple. It was a marvel that no one else worked like this, as far as C’ren was concerned. If L’mel was going to make an attempt, it had better be a halfway decent one.

And, judging by the look on L’mel’s face, the Bluerider certainly didn’t work like that either. Ah well. His loss. C’ren was considering pointing out that he hadn’t said ‘no’, yet but then L’mel did the unforgiveable. He pointed out the obvious: Ceylith’s pretty, pretty hide. Now that got a reaction out of the Greenrider. The slight flush in his cheeks was almost certainly anger. Certainly not, ‘tee hee! You caught me!’ sort of thing.

“It’s. The. Oil.” He said very, very simply, all the while lying through his teeth. Either that, or he was standing in denial and not just the Weyr lake.

I'm not going to tell mine anything like that. It would distract him from giving me a bath, and I like my baths. Dimeth still sounded grumpy, but at least he was less unpleasant and more friendly in tone. He was getting used to the company of Ceylith. That didn't mean he had to like it, but he clearly was no longer actively objecting to her presence in the water next to him. Clearly she wasn't going to leave, and Dimeth wasn't about to throw a scene. That would require more effort than Dimeth wanted to put out, really.

L'mel, for his part, rose briefly from his sulking to snort at C'ren. Right, the oil. It was the oil that did that. Then why didn't Dimeth look like that when his hide was freshly oiled? Nope, that green was going to rise soon. L'mel briefly pondered whether or not Dimeth would be interested in actually trying, should he chase her, and squashed that thought. Clearly C'ren was not interested in him or having sex with him, and that's really all L'mel wanted from most people.

"Right. The oil. Well... Good luck with that oil. I'm going to go bath my dragon. Maybe I can get Dimeth to be as... glowing as your green." The word glowing was thrown back at C'ren, a sardonic smile still on L'mel's face. It wasn't the best come back, but L'mel was reasonably proud of himself. And now his words were said, and he could splash into the water, rags in a bucket, to begin taking itchy pieces of flaking hide off his beloved mate. At least Dimeth would never reject him. Of course, he couldn't sleep with Dimeth either, but Dimeth was all the love that L'mel needed from the world.

Well, that didn’t take long. At least L’mel’s sudden lack of interest told C’ren exactly what he had been after. That was a small relief, since it meant he hadn’t been wrong. Because, you know, that was the most important thing in the world: always being right. It was a bit insulting how fast L’mel had lost interest though… but not completely unexpected. Come on. He was an attractive guy; if he wanted sex, he’d find more willing people----ie, people who were less difficult to get into bed---than C’ren.

For once, C’ren didn’t respond to the smirk with some smart-a** remark; he simply went back to cleaning off Ceylith’s hide, very meticulously. He couldn’t wipe a smirk off of someone else’s face, but, by Faranth, he could wipe off every spot---imaginary and real---from this Green’s skin! “You know, I didn’t exactly say ‘no’,” he pointed out, almost peevishly. As if he had any other tone.

He had to wonder how L’mel had become the man he was. How did he become so focused on sex? No one was born like that, right? “Where are you from?” he asked curiously. Not exactly a sterling pick-up line, now was it?

If Ceylith noticed Dimeth’s thaw, she didn’t show it much. Still, at least she agreed with his philosophy of anything distracting riders from bathing their dragons was bad. Was he always this grumpy, she wondered, like her Mine? Or had he simply had a few bad days? Well, it wasn’t any of her business. Keeping a dragon cheerful was the rider’s job, especially since she doubted Dimeth would let anyone else cheer him up.

At least Hers was actually talking to someone else. That was always a good sign, so long as he could manage to do two things at once.
PostPosted: Sat Apr 18, 2009 9:52 am

L'mel turned around. He was no longer interested in C'ren sexually, but he may as well have a conversation. He wasn't a complete deadglow. Besides, when was the last time he managed to have a conversation with another rider that wasn't focused on pillow talk? A sharding long time. Could he even remember how to do small talk?

"Weavercraft Hall," he answered, coming off as more terse than he had intended. Shard it. L'mel hated being this awkward. It just wasn't like him.

You're losing your touch. Dimeth snorted loudly, displacing water as he did so.

You can bathe and talk at the same time. L'mel hurriedly picked the rag back up, scrubbing away at Dimeth's hide as he thought, almost musing out loud, but remembering his company at the last minute.

"I was Searched to here when I was fourteen Turns though. Didn't Impress Dimeth for a few Turns more though. I thought I was doomed to never Impress. Then again, when I first came here, I thought I was straight. It was so liberating to come here, and just feel... free." L'mel had ended up saying more than he intended, and he lapsed back into a resentful silence.

"You?"

Ceylith sighed a little, once she realized that the Bluerider had utterly lost interest in Hers. Such a pity. Dimeth was as handsome as he was depressing, which said quite a lot about his appearance. Ah well. There were other Blues. It was always a minor worry of hers, though, that she might pick one with a rider that Hers disliked.

What’s Yours like? she asked eventually, deciding that she might as well ask. Just in case.

“Ceylith, wing,” C’ren tapped one wing with the long-handled brush, indicating that she needed to lift it a little so he could wash under it properly. Unlike L’mel, the Greenrider could manage two tasks at once. How impressive. He nodded a little, tentatively agreeing with the Bluerider, although he didn’t like that suspicious pause ‘freedom’ tone he had. Still, he had to admit, it was nice knowing that he wouldn’t be thought less of for sleeping with other men.

After all, he had so many other traits to be disliked.

“I was Searched from Ista Hold,” he responded automatically. It was true, technically. And it gave the impression that he was born there too. “Gotta say… Dimeth is a handsome one.”
