Cupped ears perked, Dimitry paused at the forest's edge, listening quietly. Scowling, he ducked his head suddenly and pawed at his ear as the breeze caught and tickled a tuft of fur, scratching as best he could short of rubbing his face on a tree trunk. Oh, the woes of youth. He'd worn himself out with that one after his horn had started to come in.
Finally, he gave up. It'd sometimes stop if he just ignored it. Give that a shot and see how it worked out, maybe. Lifting his head, he glanced around. Couldn't see any predators. Couldn't smell any predators. Had to be clear. Snatching a still-green sprig of berries off a bush, he set off into the high grasses. Time to find a nice warm sunbeam to laze in.

Feeling a tummy growl coming on, Kiara sucked in her belly to make it silent. She'd taught herself this after learning that the rolling growl would scare the prey. Let's just say many had been scared away before. With only a human to depend on for food after hatching, the young pyrin was quickly learning to become more independant. But it was hard going.
Hearing a rustle at the wood's edge, Kiara ducked low, though her tush stayed in the air with the tail flicking hopefully, showing her inexperience with the hunt. With a small, squeaky roar, she pounced through the tall grass that she loved playing in, managing to squish a rabbit below her. Over it's desperate flailing, another rustle caught her ears. She growled out a small warning. "I caught this! It's mine!" She called warningly.

"'Cot this' wuh-.' Nose wrinkling, he set the sprig on the ground. "Caught this what?" He stepped forward carefully, ears perking. It was a girl? Out here? "Where's your herd?" The grass rustled as he moved nearer, his lunch forgotten on the packed earth. A hundred questions raced through his mind. She sounded younger, like him. Did she wander like he did? Or was it something else?
Lifting his nose to taste the air, he tried to catch her scent. Instead, he got a whiff of something else entirely. Something else entirely unpleasant, though he couldn't immediately place it. It smelled like something metallic.

Kiara's amber eyes widened in suprise. Instead of a growl her lioness instincts warned to to be wary of, she was greeted by a small voice. It sounded like another kirin, but smaller than ones she'd met briefly before. Without thinking, she stood up to sniff the air, and the rabbit shot off, slowed by a limp. "Hey! Get back here!" She whined, running after the stumbling fuzz. She had nearly caught it again when she saw a form suddenly in front of her. She skidded to a halt with a yelp, tumbling head over hooves, stopping on her side in front of the stranger. "Don't eat me!" She begged as she tried to reorient her feet to the ground.

"Get back here? I haven't left! What are you-" Eyes widening in surprise, he lifted a hoof as something small and white - and red? - streaked toward his feet. He shifted his weight from one leg to another in an awkward prance as it dodged one hoof, then another, then disappeared into the grass behind him. He had only a bare moment to wonder at that.
A split second later, he heard hooves pound, then a crash. As he swiveled his head to explore, he barked his alarm at the tawny mass of fur and scales coming at him. Leaping a step back, his nostrils flaring, he peered at her owlishly. She'd said something? Oh, right. "... eat you...?"

Scrambling to stand, Kiara stumbled backward a step or two before laying eyes on Dimitry. She gasped. He... was her size! The only other kirinea she'd met had both been much bigger than her. Assuming that this ment he was a meat eater too, she flicked her rounded ears for signs of the rabbit as she kept a close watch on the male before her. "Did you see where it went?"

"That little fuzzy?" Dimitry frowned as he glanced in either direction. Wait... "Why?" Taking a slow step forward, his legs still shaky beneath him, he snuffled. "You smell weird." That same scent from before, only weaker. Still couldn't place it. He whickered uncertainly. That scent for whatever reason set him on edge.

Kiara rolled her eyes. "Yes, the little fuzzy!" Seeing him shake, she fought between wanting to comfort and the feeling of dominance that tasted so good. "Why? That was gonna be dinner!" At that, her stomach rumbled without warning and she sighed. "Stupid things are so fast. I didn't get anything between the last moons." She sat on her butt and sighed again. The rabbit was probably gone by now. She'd have to start all over because of this kirin.

Eyes widened at her words as Dimitry gaped. "You were going to- to eat it?! You don't eat those!" He stamped a hoof, torn between indignation and a mild fear. "Sometimes fish, but- but never those!" Staring at her in exasperation, his brow knit. "If you're hungry, go find a bush or something. Those don't run, and you can't hurt them." Ears flicking, he stood firm. It never occurred to him that he may be arguing with a Kirkani.

Kiara looked up in suprise. He was her size, wouldn't he eat the same things? "What do you mean? They're food!" She wrinkled her nose at his suggestion, tongue sticking out. "Bushes are icky." She said as if that explained everything. Her tail flicked as her mind thought around in confusion. "'Hurt them?' Hey! I kill them before I eat! No suffers. And how do you know biting a bush doesn't hurt it? Maybe they's so icky because they wants you to stop biting."

Dimitry wrinkled his nose at the filly. "But-.. but bushes are good? And I'm pretty sure it doesn't hurt them. They don't cry out like the fuzzies do. And besides, you can catch them easier." Frowning, he sat back on his haunches. "So you don't like bushes? Fruit, grass, nothing? Fish?"

Kiara cocked her head. "Wewl, I hear someone say bushes eat the ground. Maybe they don't scream because their mouths are always full?" She looked around at the tall grass surrounding them, cautiously poking it with a hoof. She shook her head at the majority of what he listed. "Fruit is okay, but not forever. It doesn't make my tummy feel better. Fish is good. But the fuzzies are best, once you get past the fuzzy part." She smiled brightly at her own joke, pointed pyrin teeth showing through it.

Smiling sheepishly, Dimitry followed the motion of her hoof. Yeah, grass wasn't always the best. But sometimes it was the only thing available. "What does a bush's mouth look like? I don't think I've seen one before."
"But the fuzzy is-" He started, moving back an inch as her pointed canines caught the light. He'd seen those before, usually on big cats. The type of big cats that liked little Kirin. "Your mouth!" He barked in alarm, scooting himself back across the ground.

Kiara shook her head. "I dunno. Maybe it's small? Or it could be-" She was cut off by his yell, jumping back in her suprise. "What's wrong with it?" She gasped, going cross-eyed as she tried to look down her muzzle.

"It's got- it's-!" Dimitry stumbled over his own feet in a clumsy attempt to stand. "You have fangs!" Why did she have fangs? Head tilted to one side, he tried to get a better look. She hadn't tried to eat him yet. Maybe they were just really long teeth.
