User ImageFrith was setting in the clear spring sky, yet there was still plenty of warmth and light for there to go around. Down beside the nearly infamous "Zorn's rock", as labeled by their resident lunatic and possible seer, Sparrow sat the small speckled runt himself, and Oakvale.
Oakvale was quite a peculiar rabbit in his own rights, he was quite a strong rabbit, with both speed and wits. His marli had many a time mention how he was the prime of her kittens, and could grow up to be anything that he had desired, be it a runner, a storyteller, even possibly one day have outranked Cocklebur, the resident captain of owsla, had he put his mind to it.
However, he didn't. He chose to lounge around in the sun and enjoy life for what it was worth, barely putting much concentration into anything other than enjoying himself. Not only that, but he seemed to be the only one that would give Sparrow and his crazy mutterings the time of day, seeming amused by the fanciful stories.

However now, in the cool evening sun, Oakvale found himself bored. He adored stories, but so far the only three rabbits in the whole of the warren who seemed interesting enough to listen to had run out've fresh stories. As wonderful as the old classics were, Oakvale craved something fresh, a new style perhaps.. Surely there were a few rabbits around who could conjure up a tale or two.
Maybe a contest of sorts was in order, to find the best storyteller amongst the low ranks.

Hopping up onto the rock that Zorn would often reside himself amongst, he pounded his foot to gain the attention of his rabbit folk, looking among them before calling out to them.

"Come one come all! I think It's high time we had a Story contest! Don't you young kits be afraid to speak of your dreams and imagination, we need to find ourselves some more storytellers!" He boomed out with quite a strong, confident voice. "We can't let Heartsease and Donovan the great hog the spotlight forever, now can we?"

User ImageHad Heartsease the ability to read the minds of other rabbits, he would have taken to Oakvale immediately. The philosophy of living life day to day and enjoying it--that's what he espoused.

But alas, he could not read Oakvale's mind. All he knew was that his opportunity to sun himself and enjoy the rare clear, sunny weather had been put to an abrupt, violent end. The sudden thumping put him on edge. He leaped up from where he'd been lying in the sun.

Oh, nothing to worry about. He relaxed as the brown buck announced his story contest. Just a little competition, then.

"If you don't mind a little intrusion by one of the 'hogs', I'd like to listen."

User ImageBlackwort was nibbling the top off a dandelion bud when he heard the foot thump. His ears jerked into the air with lightning speed, and he quickly scanned the area and the sky, looking for any dangers. When he found none, his attention turned to the rabbit who had made the noise, glaring.

"What's all this, then?" He said quickly as he moved over to the other. "Stories? Stories! You thump the ground as a warning to tell the warren that you're going to tell a story? Rubbish and poppycock, I say!"

He sat back on his hinds, unimpressed. "Or maybe we should be warned about your storytelling, hm?" His ears flattened as he relaxed. "Go on then, you're the one who got my attention. Tell a story. I dare you to. And make it good or I'll box your ears off your head."

"A thump is more than just a warning, my good sir! It can be used for communication and attracting attention. I know I personally can't help but have a good thump whenever i stretch out my back." He quipped rather cheerfully to the Owsla that threated to remove his ears. It seemed he had attracted two of the more, senior members to his friend's rock. Sparrow now the one who looked almost ashamed to know him, though the speckled runt refused to move, in case Zorn was to utter a message to the land of the living.

Oakvale turned to Heartsease. "I welcome you to the competition.. though you might be too skilled for it to be fair.. Perhaps you'd like to be judge?" He suggested, flicking his ears as he looked around. For now, there seemed little who were interested in story telling, though it seemed he'd be forced to go first by the owsla, anyway. It might be a good idea for him to go first either way.

"Well.. if you really wish for a story.. I shall tell you the story of how the snow is made!" He announced, quite proudly, hoping to catch some attention up on his rock.
"We all know how Frith-rah made the skies, the ground and everything that lives within them. He gives us wind and rain, as he gives us his warming light. But the bitter cold is brought to us by one of the thousand no longer among us today; a dreadful hunter that was quick as lightning, it's piercing howl enough to chill your bones and freeze your very soul. Wherever it ran, it would freeze over any life in it's wake. This creature was known as.. Frost."

He shivered merely mentioning the name, his fur raising on end as if he was already caught up in this Frost's gaze.

Hearing the thump, and watching the handsome Owsla officer go over to see what all the fuss was about, Zoysia decided she might want to get a closer look. She didn't care what it was all about, but where there were good looking bucks, she tended to want to be there. She knew she was vane, which probably made it worse, but what was she to do? She couldn't help she was intelligent and beautiful.

Hopping over, she heard the challenge, and the start of the story. She didn't much like it, as she wasn't fond of scary stories, and this had the makings of a scary one indeed. She listened intently though, waiting for her turn to tell one. She sat there thinking about what exactly she would talk about, listening to how snow was made, and eying the large black and grey officer with sly sideways glances. He was well built after all, and spring was upon them.

Something was afoot, quite literally really, and there seemed to be a gathering around "Zorn's" rock. Bracken couldn't help his curiousity and drew nearer to hear Blackwort's snarky comment. A warm chuckle left the chief's throat as he approached and then settled down, casually stretching out on his stomach to watch and listen.

"I admit, I always do like a good story. Let's see what you've got."

And with that the young aspiring storyteller started into the tale of how the snow is made. The thought even made him shudder for he was never a fan of the snow. He could always tell when it was coming though and the bitter cold it brought was not comfortable. But a good story at least, even if about snow and cold, would likely help ease his currently trouble mind. If only for a little while.

Oakvale slowly quelled his shivering, watching as his story seemed to be bringing a crowd. He had little thought that it was maybe the original thumping that had summoned them to him, but an audience was welcomed none the less.

"Now of course, as with El-ahrairah and his children, Frost began to make a nuisance of himself, freezing much of the land at once and killing many of Frith's creations. And of course the creatures of the land, including the many elil cried out to Frith for his help and guidance. For Frith had given this foul creature far too much power, and he was abusing it. Frost was no long equal amongst the other's of the land." The told the other's, as if it was one of the many known tales of El-ahrairah himself, told for many a generation. It of course wasn't, it was a tale from the depths of his imagination, but one he hoped to inspire those around him just as much.

"Now see, Frost was a greedy creature, and refused to listen to Frith's bargaining. He wanted to be the most powerful in the land, even greater than Frith himself, though he longed for one more thing. To be able to soar higher than any bird, to fly up in the heavens with Frith himself. Until his demand was met, he would not stop his icy rage amongst the world."

Now that the story was underway, Blackwort sat on his hinds, tattered ears raised as he listened to the story. He began to shiver at the mere thought of the cold, for it was always a hard time of the year regardless of whether one was a rabbit, elil, or woodland creature alike. The black male began to lick his front paws, rubbing his head with them in an attempt to keep himself warm, even though such was entirely unnecessary.

When he noticed the doe looking at him, he raised onto his hinds, fluffing up his fur in an attempt to make himself appear bigger and more heavyset than he already was. Once he was satisfied with his display, his nose began waffing slightly in his curiousity as he tenatively inched towards her.

He stopped again. "Forgive me for interrupting your story, er...." He paused, not knowing the buck's name. He shook his head slightly and continued. "This... Frost you speak of. Was it a homba? a pfeffa? Which of the thousand was it?"

Despite the brusque attitude of the black buck, he tried to settle down to enjoy the story. Judging from the Owsla officer's scars, he probably had a good story or two to tell, if he could be coaxed to. Once Oakvale's tale was finished, maybe.

The first story in the competition was one Heartsease had never heard before; he'd have to ask Oakvale where he'd heard it later. Well, maybe after he talked to the pretty doe who'd shown up, if he could distract her interest from the black buck...

No no no. He was getting far too distracted from the story. Blackwort's question brought his attention back. A pfeffa that froze the land wherever it went? And if it gained the ability to fly... Heartsease was very glad Frost no longer existed.

Zoysia swooned a little inside at the Owsla's show. Grinning, she turned her attentions back to the storyteller and the bucks questions about it. She didn't like it one bit, but that was to be expected. She liked stories of love, rescue, does in distress that are saved in the nick of time, wonderful sunny days with good fun and tricks to be had. The more lighthearted stories. Many enjoyed the other type, so she was stuck listening anyway, if for anything, something to do, and attention to be had.

Oakvale's ears twitched, pausing to hear of questions for his tale. Ah, he must not have explained enough.
"Ah, but Frost is not anything like you have seen or heard of before. He had the stealth of a Pfeffa, and the jaws of a great dog, He could run through the trees like a Homba on the hunt. Frost is not it's name, per say, but it's breed. It was only known as Frost, as Pfeffa is only known as Pfeffa unless one dared to question for it's name. A large, frozen beast with icy white fur bristling with icy crystals, jet black eyes that held no warmth or compassion. He was a shining stone within Frith's eye, a creation of art, to show the animals of the land what he could make. Frost would never die, but also never breed, in return, so he had no need for such warmth." He explained to the Owsla buck, though it became a little obvious that he himself was th e only one truly interested in the story. All other eyes were mainly on the doe before him, and for good reason.

"Never the less, I digress from the tale. Frith-rah had a plan. He saw no reason to allow Frost to fly into the heavens, but he had a condition, to which he told his beloved creature.

"I will grant you your wish of wings, so that you may fly amongst me and my birds, but on the one condition that your menacing power comes with a warning. You may freeze the land, should you choose, but only if you let your powers fall to the ground, so that the creatures of the land can and hear that it is coming."

Of course, Frost more than readily agreed. He himself had a plan that could be a form of a loophole to Frith's conditions. In return for his wings, he would send down a flurry of icy bells that would ring from the heavens, but fall so quickly that by the time they were seen, it would already be too late."

Blackwort's ears were perked now, and he listened to all that Oakvale was saying. After his explanation, the Owsla officer nodded slightly, signaling that he understood. He sat on his haunches as more of the story was told, picturing the scenario in his head. In the back of his mind he knew he would be afraid of such a creature but outwardly showed nothing, knowing full well of his status in the warren. If an Owsla was afraid, imagine what such would do to the morale of the others...

The story made sense to him, though. The signs of winter were obvious before the season was actually setting in. He stayed quiet, nodding, wanting for the story to continue.

The doe's reaction to his show-off display did not go unnoticed however. Occaisonally, the buck's blue eyes drifted back over to her, sizing her up. But he did not move closer - would the other male react? Perhaps put up a fight if he moved closer to her? While Blackwort did have the bulk and power in his hinds to stand his ground very well in any scuffle, he did not actually like to fight if it could be avoided. Blackwort decided in his mind that he would not attempt to scuffle with the other male unless he became unfriendly with him first.
