On a scale of one to ten, how much do you value vocabulary?

I'd have to say around 8 because I love me a good vocabulary, but I don't want to overdue it.

From the perspective of a non-native speaker who only uses English to communicate with the outside world: vocabulary is important, but overrated when it comes to the ability of communicating. You can always check your dictionary or ask what the new word means if you don't know it, or you can use other vocabulary to explain what you mean. What matters more is if you are able to communicate properly from the point of view of the grammar and style, and if you're able to speak and listen. The same applies to the school graduate exams of English where it's better to focus on grammar and everything and learn say 5 to 10 "difficult" words rather then to learn 200 words and be unable to use them properly.
The only exception to the rule is: professional vocabulary. That you can't help - you have to know it, otherwise you're in trouble.

I value vocabulary a lot, I have to since I'm studying languages. I have very good vocabulary in Finnish and English, fairly good in Swedish and basics of German (eventhough I've studied it for over a decade), Spanish and Latin.
As Kas said, professional vocabulary is difficult and yet you have no exception but to learn it. That's my problem, at least with my Business German class: we get so much new vocabulary every week that it's ridiculously difficult to memorise it instantaneously. That's why I'm failing. sad
And what's the point of us learning banking vocabulary in our English class? Not like we're going to become bankers... the basics are important, I know this, but I means using words like "irrevocable documentary credit" and "sight draft", I mean... WTF? I don't even know what they mean in Finnish! scream

I like to think that I have a mastery of the English language. Certainly, communication is important and is ultimately the entire point. However, a deeper well of words to draw from makes language into something more--it becomes about expression, not mere communication.
As for my native language, I'm a bit ashamed to say I've let my abilities atrophy, mainly because I have little cause to use the language living where I do.

I like to keep a good vocabulary myself. I get bored if using the same words over and over, I also like having a good and wide vocabulary because I write lyrics and I used to like to write story and such, a good vocabulary is essential when writing something like lyrics or a story. So on the scale of one to ten I value my vocabulary at the number 8ish.

About 6ish because most of my friends tend to act slow... Big words are like poison to some people I take it. Usually it will all come down to who I am talking to though.

There is a fine line of mastering a language and speaking like a twerp. I know a few who use a more sophisticated language not relevant to their age group. Most don't respect them for it, being they come off as an arrogant pain in the butt.
I've seen it in this guild, and I've seen it in the real life. All I can say is that, I am not fooled. Just because you really TRY to sound intellectual, doesn't make you so.

Some things are best expressed with the right word, and often times that word isn't known by the average person so it seems quite acceptable to me to use a good vocabulary.

Being a writer in my spare time (it's also what I'd love to do as part of a career), I love words and all their intracacies. Putting together the wording of something so that it flows well is fun for me, and I guess it just carries over sometimes to when I, say, text a friend. But I know what people to avoid that around, I like to stay viewed as a real person and not a pompous a**.
