Name: Westren
Age: 15 (Updated!)
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual. If asked, Westren would say that he’s heterosexual, but he has no experience with either gender, so he can't be certain.
Craft: Fisherman
Rank: Apprentice
Physical Description: It is rather obvious that Westren is in the throes of puberty. His height is only average for a boy his age, yet his calloused hands and feet are large, a sign that he will continue to grow. His fingers are slender and his shoulders slim, but mercifully his respectable amount of muscle keeps him from being mistaken for a girl. He has ginger hair just long enough to pull into a short ponytail and, like his twin, is covered in a plethora of freckles. He also has a faint tan, something only the males in their family have managed to achieve. The main thing that sets Westren apart from his twin are his eyes: a calm, cool, pale, bluish-gray.
Personality: (Some changes made) Through his desire to separate himself from Gathren and from his attempt to be a decent role model for Iantha, Westren has become strangely polite and patient for his age. He opens doors for ladies and chats with the drudges, kisses “ouchies” and lets the little Hold girls play with his hair. Although he loves her, Westren doesn’t consider it bragging when he says that he is considerably better with children then his sister Quinnel, simply because it’s true.
Westren's patience, which is likely his defining trait, does have its limits and restrictions. He is patient with pranksters so long as the pranks remain harmless, but as soon as they escalate he can become quite angry. Harmful pranksters are one of the few things that can make him truly lose his cool, mainly because he associates such pranks with his brother, who nearly made him drown. Also, his patience seems to be greater when dealing directly with people or creatures. Waiting in line, anticipating something good/bad, or trying to solve puzzles are all things liable to make him fidgety or restless.
Violence simply for the sake of violence doesn’t impress Westren, nor do many other “manly” behaviors: drinking, cussing, contests involving bodily functions, etc. On the boat Westren went about his work quietly, rarely exchanging more then polite talk with fellow crewmembers. What did bring him to talk with the other younger Fishers was when they came to him for basic woman advice; while no expert on women, nor experienced with them, Westren knows that cleaning fish together is hardly romantic. His better-then-average understanding of the moods and thought process of females earned him a grudging respect among some of his peers. The irony of the fact that he serves as a “bridge” between the genders when he himself has no romantic experience is not lost on Westren.
Westren doesn’t mind leading, but he prefers to lead from the background. He doesn’t want praise for making logical choices or doing his duty – acknowledgment, yes, but not praise – but neither does he want scorn for making mistakes, since he usually knows when he has done so. If Westren senses that the current leader - or lack thereof - is endangering others, or if he is asked to, he can step up to the plate, but the rest of the time he is content to follow, or to let someone else take recognition for his ideas.
For a smart person – yes, like most of his family, Westren is smart – he can be amazing thick and/or oblivious at times; an occasional lack of common sense, to put it simply. The most obvious example of this is that fact that he has yet to figure out that some of his thoughts concerning males are more then friendly. Another example is when he tried to make bread bake faster by putting it in the fire.
History: When he was younger, Westren was inseparable from his twin brother. Together they caused all sorts of mischief and got into a great deal of trouble, taking special delight in aggravating their older sister, Quinnel. Their relationship slowly began to change when they began their Fisher apprenticeship.
As Westren grew older and interacted with more people he began to drift apart from his brother. His brother noticed this and didn’t like it. He began to push Westren, thinking that perhaps he was just going through a “phase” and needed help getting over it. Gathren roughhoused with him, embarrassed him, and pranked him on multiple occasions. One day while at sea, a bored and frustrated Gathren challenged Westren to a friendly wrestling match. Westren refused, but his brother didn’t listen, ramming him and accidentally knocking Westren overboard. Having never learned how to swim – their father didn’t think it required teaching – Westren was tired and extremely shaken by the time the ship’s crew managed to haul him back on board. Although Gathren apologized several times, it was this event that officially separated the twins. It was this event that prompted Quinnel to toss Westren and Gathren into a pond, though she was considerably less gentle with Gathren.
When Quinnel was Searched and left for Ista Weyr, Westren decided that he would do his best to help raise Iantha in her stead. Although saddened by the loss if her sister, Iantha seemed happy enough with the increased attentions of Westren, and the decreased tormenting by Gathren. Although she is unaware of it, the real reason why Gathren began to torment her less was thanks to Westren. Gathren had planned a prank for Iantha that Westren did not find amusing in the least, so in order to get his displeasure through his thick brother's skull Westren threw his knife at his brother, the blade imbedding itself in the door beside Gathren's head (intentional miss). While not the wisest thing Westren's ever done, it did get the point across because Gathren did not go through with his prank.
Once Westren's patience was discovered, he quickly became a one of Iantha and her friends' favorite people. It soon became a common sight to see Westren going about his chores with pigtails and/or braids, courtesy of his young female fans. He befriended many of the drudges and tried to stay on land as much as possible, because after his near-drowning he developed a fear of large bodies of water. The only real reason he's still a Fisher's Apprentice is because of his father's insistence that he can overcome his "childish" fear.
Pets: None
Family: (Nerat Hold) Quin = Paternal grandfather, deceased Daymin = Father; Journeyman Fisherman Irma = Mother Quinnel = Sister, oldest sibling, Apprentice Harper and Candidate Gathren = Twin brother, Apprentice Fisherman Iantha = Sister, youngest sibling
Other/Talents: - His voice, having already changed, is surprisingly deep and does not match his appearance.
- He is fairly skilled with a knife, being tolerable at carving, fast at chopping/slicing food, and pretty good at throwing. He has only ever used his knife once against a human.
- He has a fear of large bodies of water, despite Quinnel’s attempts to “cure” him. This has obviously made his Fisher Apprenticeship more difficult.
Will this character be a candidate? Yes; needs to be Searched
