whm is necesity at lower lvls and it starts to wear out at around 50 when any job that subs it can raise.
it depends on lvls really.
you need a tank exclaim - war will do at lower lvls, l8r lvls need nin or pld
but one of the best, i think, would be bard or thf

I have to say bard...later levels with ballad, as well as acc. and atk. + for melee and then different etudes...u can get so much better chains with a brd

OK, there is no "best" job to have in any party. I say this from much experience with switching out a whm for a smn or a rdm, or another DD subbing THF(post 60) instead of thf. WAR and DRK can sub THF and put out some killer numbers, especially with WAR sata Raging Rush, Full Break, or Steel Cyclone. DRK sata Guillotine is deadly too.
Any class can be changed up, that's the beauty of FFXI. It's possibilities are endless. Blue Mage will be interesting, as nobody knows their party roles yet surprised
Wonder how they'll fit in?

It all varies and depends on the kind of party setups that you prefer over others. For me as my WAR, the jobs I normally like in a PT is really 3 other WARs, a RDM, and a BRD then hit it up in sky (And I just hate it how I'm getting some invites for them when I had something to go to T.T Twice yesterday got a invite to this PT setup before and after with Dynamis - Windurst ><).
But yeah. It's all up to what you prefer, really, along with what kind of style you like whether it's a standard camping PT with SCs and etc. or a PT built for speed and traveling with WS spamming on VTs to obtain higher chains and lower downtime.

I have a set pt with friends at lvl 63, I like this setup. Setup is PLD/WAR, RDM/BLM, DRG/WAR, THF/NIN, BLM/WHM and WHM/BLM(me)
I know that a lot of WHM are being replace by other jobs at higher lvl since most mages job can now raise subbing whm. Still, it suck for the ppl who are higher lvl getting a raise I instead of Raise II or III.

My friend is a rdm/smn and she is the best main healer I have ever seen, but I still want my raise IIs

I'd be inclined to say its a tossup between red mage and bard for obvious reasons. And the BEST parties are when you have a rdm/whm and brd/whm main healing combo!

Everyone thinks white mages are the best for partys, they definately are not. They're the ones that create partys because they're too weak to fight and they're pretty much useless when the mana runs out. Red mages are better.
