The Carpathian numbers have fallen so low that lifemates are nearly impossible to find in these modern times. Too many of the males are turning, giving into the only emotion they can feel-the joy of the kill. Those who can contain the beast inside see no hope, save for the few human women who possess true psychic power. They are capable of being lifemates to the tormented souls of Carpathian males.
Aedrus prowled the rocky hills of his homeland in the Carpathian mountains. He had lived here all his time, serving his prince as faithfully as he could. Aedrus was growing weary of this life though, and contemplating greeting the dawn before he could turn into the undead.

Pyre sat at the edge of a cliff that jutted out over more rocks, sharp ones, a long way down. No ocean in sight. Her legs dangled over the edge, she leaned back on one arm, her other hand clinging to a bottle of gin. Her long red hair with its orange and gold highlights tumbled back and brushed the ground as her pale face was turned up to the moonlight. She was dressed in what probably had been fine clothes ones, a long dress in fine silk and velvet, but it clearly had seen better days. The long dark sleeves flared around her wrists, but one of them had a small hole, the dress was dusty and the high neckline hugged her neck in a ragged pattern that may have been intentional. Her eyes were closed, but the kicker to what would have been an amazingly lovely sight to behold is that the pretty girl with the flame hair, nice dress, and gin... looked about 13 years old.

The breeze brought Aedrus the smell...human...but not. He shifted into the form of a wolf to better stalk the smell. As he came upon the small child sitting on the edge of the cliff, he was forced to shift back, colors bursting around his eyes, blinding him and taking his breath away. The child's red hair etched itself into his mind. Another sniff...Alcohol. Aedrus shook his head. Why would she be drinking? He strode out from the treeline, tall and well muscled, his blonde hair tyed back by a leather thong. "Get back, Little One! That is a dangerous perch for one such as you!"

"Little one?" she asked, twisting her torso to look at him, her blue eyes open and blazing. "Little one? Do you have ANY idea how flames cursed tired I am of being called LITTLE? I am NOT A CHILD! I can sit where I wish, and if it is dangerous so what? It's not like anyone here knows me or cares about me, and even if they did, SO WHAT? I can do what I want! I'm not made of water!"

Aedrus smiled, a predatory show of teeth. "That might be so, my little firecracker, but I cannot allow harm to come to you. Please, allow me to escort you back to your inn, or at least somewhere a little safer than that ledge." He stuck out his hand, issuing a gentle mental push to get her to do as he wished.

She felt that mental push against her shields and her eyes widened in a rage. "Oh no! No no no no NO! I am sick and tired of playing good little girl! I am old enough to do what I want, and I don't need escorting ANYWHERE. I don't have an inn, I don't have a hotel room. I came here to sit on a cliff, alone, and to try and forget for a while, and what happens? Some idiot with water on the brain thinks he can come along and treat me like a flames blessed child? I AM TIRED OF IT!" A distinct scent of smoke would reach him about then.

Aedrus smiled again. "It appears that you are indeed the firecracker I named you. Now be calm before you set the forest aflame. If you wish to stay here, then I shall stay with you. The wolves will not like a stranger in their territory, and I would not have you hurt my brethren or them hurt you." He cautiously stepped closer, clearly amused with her little tantrum.

Her hair caught fire, literally as she stood to face him, her heels at the cliff edge. She stood and took another long drink, her hair completely aflame. "Your duty? I am nothing to you, so go soak your head and leave ME ALONE! No wonder Rachel hates males, she must have met some one like you!"
