Some of the fuss over the new Weyrling had finally died down, now that it had been a few seven-days since their Impression. Zarine still found herself curious about them, and some other aspects of Weyr life, but she was settling in. The sixteen-turn old wished feverently that she had been present for the last Hatching, if just to see what it was like. Her outgoing nature had allowed her to talk to a few of the Candidates from the last clutch that hadn't been successful. She wished she'd had the same luck with the Weyrlings, but their schedual had kept them so busy ...

Looking down, she noticed that she'd been washing the same plate for a few minutes. Blush crept across her freckled cheeks. Biting a lower lip, she wondered if she'd be lucky enough to Impress at the next clutch. That, at least, would take her away from kitchen duty. Her previous life hadn't given her much experience with mass food preparation and clean up, and she could now certainly say she didn't enjoy it. But, for now, it did seem important to do a good job and not shirk on her duty, which was a good deal more than she could say of certain others.

Gawyn was more than used to kitchen duty thanks to having grown up a Weyrbrat. That, however, did not mean he was good at the duty. The gangly boy was chopping up tubers for a stew. His pieces were uneven and did not in the least resemble the neat squares the drudge next to him was producing.

He grumbled a little under his breath, heaving the large knife harder into the next tuber, with the not-so-successful result of splattering tuber flesh everywhere. He glanced around, hoping that no one had been hit by the mess.

'Mine, it's dark in there and I don't like it.' Dievath complained as he stared down into the Lower Caverns. He was still small enough to fit but that didn't necessarily mean that he ought to. The outside suited him just fine, thank you very much. He couldn't understand why his rider would want to go traveling down there of his own free will. The blue was reminded of the reason for their trip when H'dra's stomach growled.

"I'll only be a few minutes, I promise. Just wait here and I'll be right back. You can still talk to me, right?" He'd been so busy trying to fit in all his dragon care that morning that he'd completely forgot to come down for breakfast. Now that Dievath was bathed and oiled as best he could manage, he had been hoping to n** down to the kitchens and get a bite to eat. It wouldn't be long before they would have to go back to lessons, after all. "I promise I'll just be a minute. Wait here!" The young bluerider dashed down the corridor and towards the kitchen, stopping when he reached the entrance. Now that he was here, he wasn't sure quite what to say. Did he need to knock?

Stepping awkwardly inside, H'dra addressed the girl doing dishes, hoping that she would be nice enough to help him. "Sorry to bother miss, you wouldn't happen to know if there's anything left over from breakfast would you? I um... missed it." He looked incredibly sheepish. Only the double corded knot (one brown, one blue) on his shoulder identified him as a dragonrider, since he barely looked the part.

Dievath stared unblinkingly down the tunnel, before he trilled sharply. The sound echoed, and he stood straighter like a dog having heard something peculiar. 'Hee hee! It comes back Mine! Listen!' He did it again for effect.

At last, the fuss was dying down from the last Hatching... just in time for chatter to begin about the next clutch still waiting on the sands under the queen's watchful eye. Much of it went over Kypak's head. After several years of Candidate life, he still made a point of keeping up with events. But the gossip -- who Impressed what color, who had surprised everyone -- had lost a certain edge of newness, like a knife that was dulled from use but still serviceable. He would have stood himself, but his healercraft studies were only growing more intense, and frankly there was no dearth of suitable Candidates on the sands. In fact, it seemed at times like even Kypak's prodigious memory for names and faces couldn't keep up with them all.

Such as the ones in the kitchen. Kypak came in, loaded down with a stack of dirty dishes to add to the existing ones, neatly maneuvering the door with hip and foot to make up for the lack of free hands. Setting them down next to the teenage girl currently occupied with washing, he flashed her a brief smile, tinged with apology for adding to her workload. "Need some help? I'm on kitchen duty, too." While mind-numbingly dull, washing dishes was still better than some of the tasks in the infirmary. Numbweed immediately sprang to mind. Ugh.

He glanced to the Candidate who'd come in begging leftovers... whoa. Not a Candidate. Could have fooled him. His eyes lingered for a moment on the knot before he gave the boy a polite nod of greeting. Where was his dragon...? Ky thought he heard an odd noise from outside -- ah, of course he wouldn't bring the hatchling into the kitchen. Too many things for a curious dragon to get into.

Maranan walked in on this interesting scene.
He carried the wood over to the fire and piled in up.
"Hmm." He chuckled at the Dragonrider sheepishly looking for breakfast.
He was done and turned to go back to split more wood.

Zarine flipped her curly hair out of her face as she looked up at Kypak. "Oh, that'd be lovely! " She smiled back at him, showing off surprisingly well kept teeth. " I'm still a little new to all these dishes. Oh, and I'm Zarine, by the way. " She extended a moist hand towards him and the realized exactly what she was doing. " Oops, I'm going to guess you don't want to shake my hand right now. " She plunged it back into the hot water and kept scrubbing.

At the entry of the Weyrling she glanced up, beaming. " Uh, I think there's some bread or porridge still. Maybe. I hope? " She pulled her arms out of the wash water, dripping everywhere. She wiped them down the front of the apron she was wearing, and wandered over to where Gawyn was still struggling with his dull knife and over large tubers. She'd been purposefully steering clear of the boy, given his reputation.

"Hey, do you know if there's leftovers from breakfast?"

He looked up, and gestured towards a table nearer the fire places. Sure enough, upon the table a pot of porridge from the morning and the tail ends of a few loaves of bread stood. "dunno why you won't just wait for lunch ... "

Kypak flashed her a brief smile in return, with a chuckle when she offered her hand to shake and then pulled it back. "No problem, I'll be in the same position in a minute... Name's Kypak." He offered a nod of greeting to the others in the room as well -- the Weyrling, the new arrival, and a boy he hadn't noticed until he spoke up.

Once he'd made sure the new stack was stabilized and wasn't about to come crashing down on him as soon as he let go, Ky took a seat next to Zarine and got to work. With two sets of hands the work would go more quickly, and he found himself half-consciously settling into a rhythm that would get in her way as little as possible.
