"Varun. Varun. Varun, no. Put it- VARUN FINCH. YOU PUT THAT LADY'S UMBRELLA DOWN RIGHT NOW."
Varun's headfins flared and his wings straightened a little, visibly startling the lady he had pilfered the pink umbrella from. The Raevan glared at his guardian and opened the strange object, determined to investigate its wing-like quality no matter what his guardian said. He wanted to know, so, he would! It wasn't like the lady could take the umbrella back from him.
Kinsey blushed bright red, sliding both hands over her face as she tried to figure out what to do. She didn't want to cause a scene, not right in the middle of the street! But she very well couldn't let Varun learn how to steal; she was a policewoman, for goodness sake! (Okay, so maybe she was still in training, but that didn't mean it would be any less embarrassing to receive a cal about her own charge breaking the law and disturbing the peace.)
Striding over, the youth wrenched the umbrella away from Varun and handed it back to the little old woman, who quickly scuttled away. "Var, I will buy you your own umbrella on the way home, okay? Now please, just be patient for a few moments. Alex and Zul will be here soon. I promise you'll like Zul."
Varun folded his arms over his chest and watched the pink umbrella leave with its master. ".....um-brel-la," the newly-born Raevan muttered.

"Kinsee?"
"Yes."
That was the complete conversation the two had had in regards to going out that day, and the Raevan was in high spirits. Alex could only smile as her charge practically bounced down the sidewalk, head held high. Kinsey was the first human Zul had responded so positively to in regards to meeting her again - while he had liked Ethan, it was the other woman who lavished such praise upon him and thus earned his loyalty. While she was his Guardian, she was also his watcher - one who observed his trends and behaviors and tried to draw some line of understanding from them. She knew Zul was a different being, one she was studying, but he was...like a little brother to her. Not quite her son, no, but someone she loved dearly.
The two meandered down the sidewalk, Alex with her hands shoved in her black jean pockets, cobalt tank top snug over her lean body, her hair done up more loosely between her shoulder blades to enjoy the weather before it got too warm. Zul was humming a tune, fingers moving with the music before he rounded the corner of where they were supposed to meet Kinsey - and froze. And stared. Hard.
"Zul?" the Italian asked with sudden surprise, squinting at her unmoving charge. "What's wrong?" Alex peeked around the corner and got an eyeful of a Raevan she'd never seen before, floating near-- "Kinsey!" she cried out joyously, scooting past her charge and approaching the younger woman at a jog, arms extended to her friend to envelop her in her infamous hug. One arm still looped happily around her friend, she turned to look at the Raevan, her face open and adoring of the handsome vision before her. "Hello," she smiled at the scaled male Frei, fingers tapping against Kinsey's back to betray her thinly reined excitement, "I'm Alex. Zul is--Zul, are you coming?"
Bare fingers idly touched his own ribbon, bright blue eyes on the more richer, ocean green-blue of the new Raevan. There was no denying the new Frei was bright, much brighter than he liked, but those...fins. And scales. And the hair. Yes, he liked that hair. Rivener had changed his thoughts on quite a few things, and now with the prospect of meeting another Raevan, he wasn't entirely sure how he should act. Suave, like Rivener? Sweet, like LuLu?
In the end, he settled on acting like himself, slowly floating down the walkway towards Varun, gaze flicking from the bright Frei to Kinsey. He gave the guardian a wide, warm smile, extending his hand to capture one of hers and kiss the back of it. "Kinsee," he purred her name, "it is nice to see you again." Releasing her and turning his attention politely to the new Raevan, he touched his own chest, "Zul." The proverbial ball was in the other's court; the demonic Raevan could at least happily speak with Kinsey, should her charge be less desirable.

Kinsey laughed out loud as soon as she saw the hug coming, but there was very little the youth could have done to stop it...if she had even wanted to stop it. Instead, she just opened her arms and braced herself, nearly tackled by the force of the hug. "Alex! It's good to see you!" she cried, returning the hug. "I thought I'd return the favor, hah. Lunch and the new Raevan treatment," she chuckled, winking. She remembered quite well how Alex explicitly left out her guardianship of Zul the last time they had lunch.
Varun visibly started as the woman his woman kept calling 'Alex' launched herself at his guardian and latched on tight, wondering why on earth she allowed such rough treatment. He frowned, fitting his wings twice before he noticed the other being. What had Kinsey said, Alex and? Zul? Looking away from the pair of giddy women, Varun brushed a hand through his hair and regarded the male. They looked the same, relatively speaking.
"Zul." Varun pointed. He then motioned to himself. "Varun. V-uh-roon." The young Frei nodded sagely, closing his eyes with a sigh.
Kinsey covered her mouth, unable to stifle the laugh. "Zul, it's great to see you again, too! Looking as lovely as ever, I see." She motioned to Varun. "Don't mind him. He's very particular with his name. Isn't that right, Var?"
Varun frowned, giving Kinsey a dirty look as his headfins flared out to the side. "V-uh-roon!" he insisted, shaking his head. Why was his woman so hopeless? The Raevan turned back to Zul, trying to express his exasperation with a loud sigh and a shake of his head. His vocabulary was still very limited and did not cover the obnoxious that was his Kinsey.
"Zul, yes?" He nodded towards the other Frei. "Varun. V-uh-roon." A nod. "Var." A shake of his head. "Varun. Yes."

"Look at you, learning bad habits from me!" the woman giggled back, not in the least bit surprised when Varun took more interest in Zul than herself. She was used to that. Alex shrugged and squeezed Kinsey again, releasing her friend this time so as not to be too over-zealous. "When did you get him?" she asked before gushing excitedly, "I saw your name on the list but I didn't get to see him myself, schedule conflict. He's beautiful, those colors! I can't believe...this is him, you know? After all that happened...it felt like such a dream!"
Green eyes inexorably found themselves resting upon Varun, memories of catching the Leviathan's soul still fresh in her mind. It was one of those things she was certain she'd never forget in her lifetime, and to see him here...alive!...was both frightening and gratifying. "How'd you settle on that name, Kins?" she asked in a dream-like state. "It really suits him."
"Yes," he confirmed in his smokey voice, floating closer until he was in front of Varun, fingers tracing the new Raevan's attire without actually touching. He was so colorful, and those scales! "Vuhroon," he repeated, withdrawing his hand to press over his chest and give a short bow. "I am Zul. A pleasure to meet you." It was nice, in a superior type of way, that he wasn't the one with limited speech this time. It had never bothered him before, but he could only attest his improved vocabulary and growth from a newborn as proof of his greatness.
Zul's crystalline eyes turned over Varun once again, not imposing, but looking, learning, memorizing. "You look like a sunset," he informed the newer male, his gaze pausing on the Leviathan's chest. "Except there." Such a strange color scheme, but it worked for the other Frei. The demonic Raevan's eyes eventually found Varun's again, and there they rested. There was something about the color of his eyes that was soothing, a memory he couldn't quite place. "Vuhroon is very pretty," he concluded, giving him Zul's Stamp Of Approval.

"Just a few days ago! He's already got a lot of opinions." She chuckled, unable to wipe the ridiculous grin of her face as Alex gushed. "I know, I know! It's so hard to believe he was that same beast we found on your rocks over the summer! I mean, even though I handed over the soul and the essence, it never felt really, well, real, you know? But it's real. He's real."
She followed Alex's gaze, crossing his arms over her chest with a pleased sigh. While reserved, Varun still seemed to be getting along with Zul fine. Kinsey was sure he'd break out of his shell sometime, it was just going to take a little bit of work! "Oh, his name? It means 'lord of the sea'." She chuckled and shook her head. "It seemed appropriate for his soul, I just hate for it'd go to his head." At least, thus far, Varun hadn't acted like he had an ego.
Varun's headfins were splayed out to the side slightly, but Zul never actually touched him, and the aquatic Frei was soothed. The fiery-haired Frei didn't seem to mean any harm and Varun rather liked his voice. Looking up and down Zul, he finally nodded and purred. "Pleasure. Yes," he replied, picking up some of the demonic Raevan's words.
"A sunset? What?" He tipped his head. He want's sure he saw it. He didn't look like that big glowy thing in the sky, even when it did 'set'! Varun's confused frown melted a little when he finally met Zul's eyes and he held the gaze, wings flaring a little to the side, flitting a little. Varun found himself nervous again, though he could not explain the feeling, not even if he had the words for it. He was nervous, be he did not feel threatened. It was strange.
"...pretty? What? Like...girl?" Varun looked bewildered, and then he looked mildly offended. He shook his head. "No? Varun, girl? No." He patted his chest. "Varun, boy? Yes. Yes. Varun, boy. Like Zul. Zul and Varun. Yes. Zul and Varun."
Kinsey chuckled as Varun tried to explain himself to Zul. "He really likes words, but he kind of picks them up randomly," she told Alex. "I hope Zul doesn't mind too much."

Gentle laughter escaped the awed woman. "Opinions," she repeated with dry amusement, "y'don't say." Green eyes fondly watched the two interact, her grin growing as the two observed one another. To her, it was like watching to see which male would assert themself as dominant...but she knew Zul, and knew that wasn't the game he played, not exactly. His game was something else entirely. "The name suits him beautifully," Alex complimented her friend, looking to her with a warm smile, "very well done, Kins.
Is he giving you any difficulty at home?" she asked thoughtfully, wondering what type of personality a leviathan would possess. Destructive? Peaceful? Wise? It was so hard to tell with something they both had such limited knowledge about! That coupled with such a volatile essence...!
A rich, rumbling sound escaped the demonic Frei; he was laughing, expression jovial and almost kindly. "'Pretty' isn't just for girls," Zul lifted and waved a dismissive hand, as if the two were sharing a joke, "it's used to describe something." The amused Raevan floated over and next to Varun, turning so that they were both facing the same direction. Gloved hands raised to the sky, blue eyes turning over the spotted clouds with fond reverance. "Storm clouds, they're pretty," he purred in his smokey voice, bare fingers curling as though he could touch the supple sky. His gaze lowered, motioning a near by tree that had stubbornly held onto sparse leaves, indicating the dark green against the damp, dark wood, "Contrast. Musky rain smell, is pretty, good."
The Raevan turned again to observe a few humans in passing; one wore a yellow rain jacket, the other a black number with a feathery collar. "Dark one is pretty," he explained, indicating the feathered collar and not caring if the two could hear him, "the bright yellow, not so much." Zul finally turned to Varun, thoughtful gaze turning over the younger Raevan's face. "Sunsets are bright, but the colors in the sky are very pretty. Not like anything else you'll ever see. Unique." To that, the demon smiled, lifting a hand to indicate Varun, again without touching, "Pretty. See?"
"No," Alex mused with a slightly embarrassed smile, "I don't really think he minds." It was hard to believe that her charge had been similar not all that long ago - he had an unusually good grasp of words even in his 'baby' days, but he had already come so far.

Varun listened to Zul in complete silence, sea green eyes widening a little as the demonic Frei illustrated his point with vivid imagines and perfect examples. If only he could speak like that! Varun realized his spikey-haired acquaintance was asking something and blinked, looking down at his vest before glancing back up to meet the older Raevan's gaze. "See? Yes. Varun, pretty. Zul? Pretty. Yes."
Varun nodded firmly, motioning to the other Raevan as he gave him a once over. If Varun was different, Zul must be, too. He was not ugly like the yellow lady and he was not like Kinsey or his woman. He was Zul and there was something quite unique about him. Varun rumbled deep in his chest and pointed to the pair of chatting women. "Mine. Zul's." He pointed towards the shop they were floating outside and tipped his head, fins flaring forward just the slightest. "What? Whatfor?"
"Well, that's good." Kinsey chuckled softly to herself and motioned towards the door. "Well, are we all going to stand out here and chat like biddies? I owe you lunch, Alex." She glanced at the pair of males. "You boys should come along, too. I'm sure there are more people for you to watch."
Varun's headfins tipped and he regarded Zul curiously. ""Watch, yes?"

Amusement lit his vivid eyes, his smile every bit as warm as his expression. This one was quick, at least, and didn't think him odd for his mannerisms. It was already a chunk of favor to the newborn. "Thank you," he returned in his light, smokey voice, doing his best not to purr and preen at the compliment. If Varun could be as charming and flattering as Kinsey, he would be high on the demonic Frei's list of those to favor.
Zul turned his gaze over the indicated women, inclining his head in agreement. "Lovely Kinsey," his smile flickered with an obvious fondness, "my woman. Good. They are good." He'd yet to meet anything bad, really, but the Raevan was an optimist, finding it hard to see ill of anything as of yet. At the question, he turned to observe their point of venture, giving an idle flap of his wings in consideration before answering. "Varun feeds? This is human feeding." Yes, that most...bizarre tradition of humans feeding. It was quite a fascinating thing, to him, so...silly. Having never eaten through his mouth beyond a snowcone, the idea just seemed ridiculous to him.
"Right, right, we can chat like biddies inside just as well." Alex laughed, turning towards their meal time venue and opening the door, extending her free hand for both Kinsey and the Raevans. "I dunno about you, but I'm starving. Zul hasn't eaten yet today but I doubt he's hungry with such a distraction." Her lips curled into a slight grin, green eyes taking in the chatting twosome.
"Watch," he agreed, floating towards the women, although his attention stayed on Varun. "Play." The newborn may not understand that part, but it was okay - he would learn shortly of Zul's penchant to entertain himself while waiting for his woman to do her humanly things.

Varun lapsed back into silence, attention torn between Zul and the two women. Kinsey and Alex were heading in as the older Frei explained what exactly they were doing here. It seemed a bit odd to the aquatic Raevan. Kinsey always fed herself at home. She made things, with the tall cold box and the hot counter. Both were things he was not allowed to touch. Given, after the curious inside of playing with the knobs and setting things a boil, he hadn't exactly wanted to get near the strange beast.
Kinsey had indeed started to head inside, holding the door for the Italian and the pair of males before following up in the rear. She rejoined Alex in line, rocking on her heels as she heartily agreed. "Oh, totally. I need to go out grocery shopping again sometime soon, but Varun is hard to bring out, sometimes." He seemed to be able to find trouble in anything, especially when they didn't run into another Raevan to keep him occupied. "He's very curious, you know? And it's not always, uh, nice." Like when he just took things from people and glared them into silence. She never taught him that; where on earth did he learn to do something like that?
Speaking of the red-headed theif, the cop-in-training glanced over her shoulder, mildly concerned about the sudden silence. But Zul and Varun had found their way in just fine, it would seem, and the demonic Frei was striking the conversation back up. Kinsey was not sure how she felt about them 'playing' in here, but she really had no reason not to trust Zul, right? Right.
Turning back to Alex, she glanced up at the menu and considered her choices. "So, what do you fancy, eh? Get anything you want." It was nice, having a real job so she could pay for these things!
Meanwhile, Varun carefully tucked his wings and fins to his body, unwilling to get tangled in anything inside the building. It certainly smelled interesting, like Kinsey's 'food', except much better than anything Kinsey ever made. Zul's words caught him off guard. Blinking, he glanced over, tucking red hair behind his ear. "Play? Play what?"

Laughter followed her friend's statement about Varun. "He's a handful, huh? With such charming good looks and that perpetual scowl, I'm not all that surprised." Alex grinned at Kinsey, teasing, but perhaps hitting too close to home. "That's the beauty of them, they're all different. I guess I'm lucky Zul's curiosity is limited to observation unless he's approached. He's only hands-on when it comes to meeting others." Reminding herself of this fact made the woman again look to the two, but it seemed the demon was keeping his hands to himself, for now.
"Play," Zul's rich laughter filled the air, blue eyes lidded in a knowledgeable manner. "Heat things up, make them cold. Don't you have power to play with?" The demon lifted a hand, demonstrating as ice crystals began to form against his palm like frost, before it melted under the less-visible heat. "There's no fun in humans doing things if we can't do things too." The tone of voice he used was slightly disdainful, as if the mention of 'human things' was entirely unappealing. To the self-righteous Raevan, they were positively boring.
"So, then," he pushed the subject a little, tilting his tri-horned head to the side. "Varun, what does Varun do? Do you know yet?" He imagined that not all Raevans were as lucky as he, to have such innate powers that were a part of his daily life. It also didn't hurt to show off a little, if not only to spur the newborn, to make him question. It would likely drive both of their Guardians nuts later in the day, but for now, it seemed like a very good idea to teach Varun this important lesson early on.
Alex's smile faded at the laughter, but she decided to let it go for now, turning her attention to Kinsey and then the menu beyond. "Oh uh...you know, a BLT with some avocado sounds like heaven right now. Maybe a bowl of cottage cheese with fruit." The woman's stomach made a rumbling noise to confirm that yes, that was indeed sounding good. With a faint blush, she rubbed over her abdomen, her expression sheepish, "Guess skipping breakfast was a bad idea."
