Rivener enjoyed being on his own, once in a while. Ever since he'd become a Sigel, he'd taken to wandering alone more and more, testing his boundaries. Aphismet, the few times he'd noticed his ward leaving, hadn't put up a fuss so Riv was rather certain he was Grown-Up enough in his guardian's eyes. It was such a free feeling! He wasn't tethered to the house, or to Aphi's side anymore! The only thing that had changed is that the white-haired chef had bought a cell phone for Riv, telling him This better be charged up, powered on, and in your pocket at all times!. In case Aphi got worried, he could call and check up on the Scorpion. Which he did quite an annoying amount of times, actually.

Although, it was decreasing every week. Rivener had been in the park for almost three hours now, and he hadn't gotten a call yet. He was busily taking pictures, enjoying this time of year. The little fuzzy things that grew on tree branches made for some really cool pictures, as did the small flowers that pushed up through the last bits of snow where the sun hadn't gotten yet. There were tons of kids playing around, making an utter mess in the mud and giggling madly. Riv had a few pictures of them, too. As well as the moms, who'd been more than happy to pose for the handsome floating half-man.

Deciding to take a small rest, Rivener headed for a bench to "sit". He opened the coat he'd thrown on over his usual clothes, letting the sun warm his front a little bit, basking like a Scorpion on a rock. It was a rather nice day, if you looked past the kinda-cold air. "Ah!" Riv sighed with a smile, letting his hands drop to the bench. "Ah?" The clawed fingers had brushed against something, drawing Riv's attention over.

A book? Folktales from Around the World... Looking around, Rivener searched for anyone who might look like they owned this. Perhaps someone just walked to a nearby waterfountain, or threw something in the trash bin and is coming right back... But no, not a single person was looking his way or seemed to be concerned about the tome Rivener now picked up. "Hm, did someone forget this, then?" Opening the cover, Rivener found what he'd been hoping to find: a name, a phone number. He supposed he should return this! His good deed for the day.

Picking up his cell, Rivener dialed the number printed in the book. As soon as someone picked up, the Scorpion explained his call. "Ah, hello? Yes, my name is Rivener, I found someone's book on a bench in the park. It says "Xiu". Did I say that right? Anyway, I'm at the park bench right now with it, what should I do? Are you coming to pick it up, or I could go bring it to you if you're alright with giving your address to a perfect stranger." Which would be rather silly, but Riv shrugged.

Xiu had just returned home from helping Mrs. Bediever run an errand when the phone rang. Picking it up, Xiu was surprised to hear a rather masculine sounding voice on the other end of the phone. Having been living in a family run bookstore since the day he was discharged from the lab, Xiu was not used to getting calls from someone who sounded like a confident young man who belonged in a television series…or something.

“You found a book? With my name on it?” asked Xiu feeling rather surprised. Had he really left his book behind? Oh dear… and to think that he had not realized it. Feeling ashamed of himself for being this irresponsible, Xiu immediately decided to head to the park to retrieve said book before anyone had time to miss him.

“If it’s no trouble, could you hang on to the book for a little longer?” asked Xiu giving a glance to the clock on the wall. “I will be there in umm…let’s say 20 minutes? Thank you, Rivener,” said Xiu as he hung up the phone.

“Who was that Xiu?” came the voice of Mrs. Bediever from the second floor as the old lady bustled about like a mini whirlwind that made everything neat and tidy in its path.

“It’s someone called Rivener,” answered Xiu floating up to meet the housekeeper. “He found a book I left behind. I will be leaving for the park to retrieve the book now Mrs. Bediever,”

“Oh, in that case, why not bring along a couple of these home made muffins?” said Mrs. Bediever indicating to a tray of freshly baked apple and cinnamon muffins. “It has never hurt to thank someone properly for a good deed you know,”

“Oh, thank you Mrs. Bediever!” exclaimed Xiu happily. Apart from helping out with the sales of books in the bookstore, Mrs. Bediever had a small corner to herself for selling her freshly baked cakes and cookies. The customers seemed to love them although Xiu has never tried them himself. “I am sure Rivener would like them,”

Rivener was glad he'd found this Xiu person right away, instead of having to explain himself again and again as people passed the phone around. He smiled at the voice, which sounded young and dignified at the same time, like a rich young kid or something. Maybe a young boarding school boy would show up, wearing a school uniform? That's what it sounded like...

"Sure, I'll be here. See you in a bit."

Flipping his cell closed, Rivener shoved it back into his pocket and sat there for all of two seconds before he lifted the book, thumbing through it absently. It was okay, wasn't it? He wouldn't get in trouble for leafing through someone else's book. Leaning back on the bench comfortably, Rivener settled in for the required twenty minutes, letting himself get caught up in a fairytale from China.

Would this person be late? Would they be grateful for Rivener's actions? Would they be impressed by Riv? The Scorpion was still not completely used to being a Sigel, and as much as he tried not to turn into a vain person he couldn't help but secretly hope people would stop and notice him. The passersby in the park certainly did that, staring at him openly from time to time, stroking his ego despite Riv's best efforts to keep it under control. It was therefore with a twinge of annoyance at himself that Rivener sat up when the twenty minutes were nearly up, consciously smoothing his clothes and running fingers through his hair lightly, trying to look as dashing and stunning as possible. He'd normally not stand for wearing this extra coat on top of his usual clothes, but Rivener had bought this coat especially because it was beautiful and flattering, all leather and zippers and whatnot. Then, trying to look casual, Riv settled back onto the bench and continued to read.

Xiu certainly hoped that he had not kept the other waiting too long. Finding a bag to place the muffins in had taken some time and Xiu had to make up for it by floating just a little faster than he was used to. Arriving at the park, Xiu slowed and began making his way to the bench he had been on earlier.

As the white frei floated, Xiu couldn’t help but feel a little apprehensive of the approaching meeting with Rivener. No doubt that Rivener was a nice person. He had taken the trouble to inform Xiu of his misplaced book but what if …well…the human was not used to seeing a half bodied, white haired, horned humanoid being? At best, the man would probably shrug it off, at worst…he’d run screaming. Xiu certainly hoped that this Rivener person was not the screaming kind.

Ah, there was the bench Xiu had ‘sat’ on this morning and there was a person sitting down with his back to Xiu and reading a book. Xiu floated over, not realizing that the young man lacked legs, had horns and a rather lethal looking set of wings in his haste to retrieve his lost book. When he did notice however, Xiu was within an arm’s reach away from the Sigel and before he could stop himself, Xiu blurted “You are a raevan!”

So much for proper introductions…

Rivener nearly startled out of his skin at the sudden exclamation near his ear. He'd of course not heard the other Raevan coming, since there was a distinct lack of footsteps. The vicious-looking wings had flared wide and Rivener straightened from the bench as quick as a venom-strike, ready to defend himself if need be...

But instead of a mugger he found a fellow Raevan staring at him with surprise written clear across his features. The content of that scream just now finally filtered in, the stunned exclamation declaring Rivener's nature as though wholly unexpected. Red eyes blinked for a moment, but Riv then glanced at his watch- yes, the time was right...

"Could you be... Xiu?" The Scorpion remained stunned for a short moment longer before chuckling, stretching his wings and folding them comfortably back against his spine. "You really startled me. You're Xiu, then. Hunh, what a small world, running into another Raevan at random like this. I am Rivener, and this must be yours, yes?" With a short bow and a sly smirk, Rivener handed the book over.

Idly he wondered if he was suitably impressive. This Raevan was a Frei, one Rivener had never met. He must be fairly young. It was important for Rivener, one of the few Sigel, to make a good impression.

The flared wings, the fierce expression… Xiu was sufficiently startled by the sudden aggression of the other. True, he had approached from the back and probably shouldn’t have exclaimed as he did but…the sight of a towering Sigel ready to attack in self defense was…to be honest…rather terrifying and Xiu was just about to throw the muffins he was carrying at the other when ...

“I am Rivener, and this must be yours, yes?”

“Y-You are Rivener?” stammered Xiu, more in surprise than anything else as he lowered the bag containing the muffins. “I would never have… thought that and ummm, yes…thanks, that book is indeed mine,” said Xiu colouring a little as the other gave him a short bow. The white frei was obviously not used to such attention; especially not from a Sigel as impressive as this one. Taking the book, Xiu stared a little longer than that was necessary at Rivener before shifting his gaze elsewhere. They had only just met and Xiu was probably doing splendidly in turning this conversation into an awkward one.

“I am sorry if I have startled you…,” said Xiu as he held the book. “That was…not my intention, Rivener.

“You are…like Lazarus, aren’t you,” said Xiu referring to the stage Rivener was in rather than his physical attributes.
PostPosted: Mon Mar 30, 2009 9:05 am

Rivener noted how flustered and staring the Frei was with no small measure of self-satisfaction. His smirk grew into a pleased grin as the book was taken, and the dark Sigel amused himself by simply listening to the youngling go on and on, stumbling over himself just slightly. He did have a distinguished way of speaking for someone so young, this Xiu.

"It's alright, no harm done,"
Rivener replied to the apology, chuckling. "I wasn't expecting someone to approach me without footsteps is all."

There was a short, awkward-sounding pause on the young Frei's behalf (amusing Rivener greatly) before Xiu suddenly asked if Riv was like Lazarus. The ruby eyes remained focused casually on Xiu for a moment before Riv crossed his arms and glanced aside, sighing. Laz, always stealing the First Meeting! Hmph! Riv would like to be the first Sigel someone met for once, but of course every newborn met Lazarus first. It was only natural since he was Dr Kyou's ward... But still! Rivener couldn't help but feel a little jealous.

"Yes, I am like Lazarus if you meant how developed I am. But I'd like to think I'm very much NOT like Lazarus in most other ways." Riv smirked, turning his eyes back to Xiu. "I'm much cooler than he is," the Raevan declared with a chuckle, obviously not taking his own words seriously.

"Were you on an errand or something?" The Scorpion continued, pointing at the bag that looked as though Xiu was sent to pick up some items at the store.

Xiu nodded as the Sigel accepted his apology and but was quick to notice how the Sigel had looked away with slight disapproval at the mention of Lazarus; as well as the fact that Rivener had stated that he was much cooler than Lazarus. Were they not on good terms then?

Deciding not to comment on that, Xiu smiled at the Sigel before him; the initial shock of their meeting wearing down somewhat. “Yes, I was referring to the presence of…,” Here Xiu paused as he tried to recall what an abdomen was called before finishing lamely “…the part below the chest,”

“An errand?” Xiu asked a little quizzically before realizing that Rivener was pointing at the bag in his hands. “Oh, no, this…this was meant for you, actually,” said Xiu becoming a little flustered once again. How could he have forgotten the muffins?

“But you probably do not eat human food; perhaps you guardian would enjoy it,” said Xiu as he offered the bag to Rivener. “But that would still leave me in your debt. What would you like in return, Rivener?” asked Xiu as he eyed the other. “It’s only right that your kindness is repaid. I would have been…most distressed if I had found out that my book was missing,”

Rivener chuckled as the white frei struggled to find the word for Riv's stomach, finally giving up. "Abdomen, or stomach, yeah," the Scorpion provided with a grin, smoothing a hand over his lower body. He was still rather proud of his abs.

The topic moved on rather quickly as Xiu continued on to offer Rivener the bag, implying that it was food. Opening the top as he took the gift from Xiu's hands, the Scorpion smirked. "Oh, this is fine! I can eat human food now, in small amounts. So this muffin gift is fine. Smells nice, too. Did you make these? Or your guardian? Where IS your guardian, anyway?" Suddenly realizing this Raevan looked like he was alone, Rivener began glancing around the park, expecting that the person responsible for Xiu was hanging back for the moment. Xiu certainly seemed too young to be wandering around alone.

Not finding anyone, Riv frowned slightly and glanced back at the white frei. "Hm... Alone, hunh? Not good. Not good at all. Doesn't your keeper worry about your safety? What if I was some crazy scientist trying to get my hands on a Raevan?" He didn't want to scare Xiu, but... well, okay, maybe Riv did want to scare him a little. For his own sake.

“No, the housekeeper, Mrs. Bediever bakes them,” replied Xiu as the watched Rivener inspect the muffins; feeling a little envious that Rivener was capable of eating human food. At the Sigel’s next question however, Xiu raise his eyebrows. “My guardian? You mean Hazeline?” enquired Xiu politely. “She’s probably working; doesn’t return home till five. I came here on my own after telling Mrs. Bediever so it is fine,”

Nevertheless, Xiu was aware of Rivener’s concern. “I guess not,” mused Xiu as he let out a soft laugh. “Hazeline does not mind me being independent and you are not some crazy scientist bent on capturing me; I would know if you have an intention to do harm and hopefully keep myself well out of your reach by then. It’s…something that I was born with I guess…,” admitted Xiu as he tried his best not to sound too boastful. “ A sort of defense mechanism if you will, I am sure you have one as well, probably your wings. They do look intimidating when flared,”
PostPosted: Mon Mar 30, 2009 10:17 am

Rivener listened intently to everything the younger Raevan was saying, mentally noting everything. A housekeeper? So Xiu WAS a rich kid, just like Riv had first thought. Guardian's name: Hazeline. Works til five. Xiu has defense mechanism? Even the compliment about Riv's wings being intimidating wasn't enough to deter Rivener's new curiosity about this last detail he'd learned.

"You can tell people's motives? That's certainly handy. That's like a power of yours, is it? Does it happen automatically or do you have to look for it?" Rivener was much more prying than usual, even for a fellow Raevan. He supposed it's because he was a little jealous that this Frei had about as much freedom as he'd finally earned as a Sigel. Lucky little-

Stopping himself before his jealousy got out of hand, Riv took a deep breath and shook his head. "My wings are my defense, yeah. Poison. ...So, I wonder, would it be okay for me to take your picture? That'd be a good way to say thank you, apart for the muffins of course." He'd had to change the topic, or he'd get rather moody with jealousy.

“Only if they are intent on causing harm, yes. These beings then appear with a sort of dark glow around them, bad aura,” explained Xiu surprised by the other’s sudden interest. “And umm no, I don’t. It comes naturally. I am incapable of turning it on or off at will,”

“But having poison would also be good, yes?” asked Xiu deciding that he too had the right to be a little inquisitive of the other raevan. “It must be useful to be able to take on offenders instead of merely avoiding them,”

"And I do not mind having my picture taken,” said Xiu smiling slightly. “Although Hazeline has warned me of the dangers of simply allowing anyone to take them. Just for curiosity’s sake, Rivener, what do you plan to do with the picture; once it is taken?”
PostPosted: Mon Mar 30, 2009 10:48 am

Rivener hmmm'ed thoughtfully as Xiu explained his power, the Scorpion finding it rather good. At least the frei would be able to tell who to avoid, even if he couldn't actually fight them. And as though he'd read Riv's mind, that's exactly what Xiu said a moment later, bringing up Rivener's poisons and saying it might be nice to be able to fight off bad people. With a dry smirk, Riv nodded.

"Yes, my stingers have saved my family a few times before... but has harmed them, too. So it's something I really really have to be careful with. I wouldn't want to sting someone who didn't deserve it, so I think having your power would be better." The Scorpion's smile was worthy of an oscar, betraying none of the self-loathing that always came when he mentioned how monstrous he'd been that one time...

"Ah, your guardian does seem wise, even if she's not here to look after you all the time. I'm not gonna do anything with the picture, I'm just going to keep it at home with the other pictures I took of Raevans. Actually you just gave me an idea; maybe I'll start a Raevan family album or something. It'd be nice to have a picture of every Raevan there is..." The Scorpion was mostly thinking out loud now, wondering if it's best to print out these pics and put them in an actual album, or maybe he should just leave it all digital, and would it be alright to make a website...

Shaking his head clear for now, Riv turned his attention back to Xiu with a mildly sheepish smile. "Ah, sorry. But uh, yeah as I said. It'd just be for me to keep. Unless I make a Raevan website or something; would that be okay with you?" Of course Rivener had no idea how to make a website so he was getting a little ahead of himself, but he'd figure that out later.

It was odd having someone tell him that his so called ‘power’ was better than their own but perhaps Rivener did have a point. If he were to lose his ability right now, Xiu guessed that he’d be terrified and trusting someone would then seem like a game of chance. There was always the chance that a person might turn against you…at least that was how it was in books and dramas.

Still, the idea of single handedly defeating a bunch of foes was temtping…

“It is not better,” said Xiu shaking his head. “It is merely different and having the picture online is fine; provided that you send me the link to the site,” said Xiu smiling at Rivener’s verbal thoughts.

“So…do we take a photo together or…do I stand alone and where?” asked Xiu tilting his head in a slightly questioning manner at Rivener.
