((Due to the nature of this RP, the char Kallista may need to be moved/puppeted by the following people Raena/C'ren))

Please! Please! Astarteth begged her rider. The green was once again complaining about not being able to get good and scrubbed. She loved her rider with all her might but Kallista preferred to sponge bath or scrub Astar and then toss buckets of water on her. I want to be clean. We can meet others!

Kallista sighed. How could she explain to her beloved that she hated the water. She would sit and stare out at the water but freeze the moment she had to get in. She cringed at the thought of even getting close to the water. But her green deserved the best and if the best meant maybe only going in knee deep... "I suppose we can go this time. But we have to stay near the shore. Okay?"

You mean it? OKAY! Yes! Let's go! And the green started immediately waddled towards the lake. Her tail was disappearing through the door by the time that Kallista managed to grab the bucket with cleaning supplies.

No one in the Weyr knew about her past. Or rather, about her mother's untimely death. The water seemed omnious and frightening to her know. She couldn't understand it or explain it but all Kallista knew was that she hated it. She walked quickly to catch up to her dragon before someone said anything about a green weyrling wandering around without her rider. Her bucket had a brush, a clothe, sweet smelling oils, and of coarse, soap sand. With her pants rolled up to her knees and her hair pulled up, Kallista was as ready as she could be...

Hurry! Hurry! Many people and dragons are there! You must make me pretty and clean! Astarteth bugled happily.

"I'm coming! Slow down!" Kallista called out in a sullen voice. For the first time since coming to the weyr, she was actually unhappy with her dragon and her chores. Her hazel eyes had lightened to a bright green, very similar to the color of her dragon's hide. Taking a deep breath and counting slowly, the former runner approached the shoreline. Astarteth was right, there were dragons of all shades enjoying the warm waters. Riders splashed, chatted, and swam with their dragons like it was an everyday thing. Which it was. Kallista was just that paranoid. Taking her first step into the waters, she shuddered and tried to focus on her dragon. "I can do this. I can do this."

Do what, Kali? It's just water!
Astarteth popped up in front of her and chortled happily. We should have done this ages ago!

Squeaking, Kallista closed her eyes. There, the waters rising over her head fast, dark and murky, her mother screaming... Letting out a deep breathe, she opened her eyes and looked down at the green dragonet. "Please do not do that, okay? Let's just take it slow."

Sitting down slowly, Kallista allowed the lake waters to hit her knees and touch the hem of her pants. The water was actually quite comfortable. The sun had warmed the waters so a person could stay in for at least an hour and just be lazy. The waters didn't get deep for at least a dragon length. Trying to be bold and brave for her green's sake, Kallista moved a little further into the lake and tried not to cry. It was not that bad. It was not raining or muddy and the lake waters couldn't rise quickly to drag people away to their deaths. "Having fun, dear?"

Lots of fun! Please come in deeper. It is so nice!
The green swam around her rider, splashing and blowing bubbles.

"Not just yet, Astar. You have fun."

Dressed coolly, if a bit immodestly by her hold's standers, Raena had come to watch the dragons play in the water so it was practical. Watching them move without interruptions by herself would give her a great opportunity to learn by observing.

With the weather how it was, the cool water was another perk. With sounds of splashing, there was little doubt she wouldn't get hit at least once on accident.

She picked a softer spot on the far side of the water from the green and her rider. The green she recognized from the hatching, the young woman felt she could never forget a single dragon from any of the hatchings she had been to, least of all the ones that could have been hers. It was an empty feeling but she didn't begrudge anyone who impressed in her stead.

Smiling a little, she made a nest with her arms on her knees to prop her chin and watched with no effort to try and grab their attention. Her own little blue flit came and snuggled in the warm on her lap against her stomach. Her actions made a nice little shady place to rest and the purr told her Spearkeek appreciated it.

It felt like everyone and their brother had the same bright idea today: Gee! Let’s go out and wash our dragons! In retrospect, this made perfect sense. After all, it was a nice day, the weather was warm, and the lake was more or less a sort of gathering ground for Greens and, occasionally, Blues. Sure, other colors could come down to the lake… but it felt like they rarely did. Despite its unofficial designation as a meeting ground, C’ren still was slightly annoyed that he couldn’t have the whole lake to himself and Ceylith. Unfortunately, Ceylith was in one of her moods where she wouldn’t take no for an answer. That is to say, she threatened to sit on C’ren if he didn’t take her down to the Lake and wash her this instant.

Carefully balanced on the back of his dragon, C’ren did his best to ignore everyone else. This was their moment, shard it all, and he’d be damned if it was ruined just because of some other people. It was awkward trying to stay balanced with a bucket of soapsand, but practice made perfect. Upending the bucket, he liberally covered Ceylith’s green hide with the grains and slid back down to pick up the stiff-bristled brush. Standing knee-deep in the water, the Greenrider had elected to keep his shirt on. It always felt so awkward washing a dragon while wearing a shirt, but it felt even more awkward to go half-naked. What were they, barbarians?

The stiff bristles moved briskly across Ceylith’s soft hide, carefully scrapping away dry and dead skin, leaving behind bright new hide. The Green was already fairly bright, but this made her practically glow.

And, quite frankly, Ceylith rather enjoyed that. She let out a sigh of happiness at the washing, enjoying the attention immensely. She’d even let one wing out wide to allow C’ren easier access to a joint or under her wing. In all honesty, she couldn’t understand her rider sometimes, but so long as he was willing to lavish this sort of attention on her, he could be as strange as he liked.

A little to the left, please? she pleaded, nudging the brush with her nose slightly to get it in the right place. It’s been itchy there especially. Her rider obliged, getting another happy croon from the Green. Her eyes briefly slid shut, as if that would somehow emphasize the sensation. Maybe it did. Still, she opened them once again when she heard a pair of familiar voices. C’ren! It’s Astar and her Mine! We should go see them!

Without waiting for a response from her rider, Ceylith happily ambled over to the smaller Green with soapsand still clinging to her hide. Astar! Hello again! I am very happy to see you.

Vox, all shiny and new from the same procedure not too long ago, chirruped. His newly-oiled blue hide winked in the air and he made a point of preening in front of any available female firelizard. He was fat, yes, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t try to show off! Up until the moment when Ceylith suddenly gamboled off, the Blue flitt had been resting on the dragon’s head, settling down for a nap. But her sudden movements ruined Vox’s chance of a nap. Not that he was angry, of course!

With a yawn, the blue flitt spread his wings wide and lazily flapped for a moment. But then he saw someone familiar. A nice person! With another flitt! With a delighted squeak, Vox made a beeline for Raena and Spearkeek, being quite happy to see a possible friend and someone who might have food.

By this time, Kallista had managed to get further out into the lake waters without panicking. She was probably two dragon lengths out and the small waves were hitting her at mid-thigh. She was shaking but making progress on Astarteth's flaking skin. In fact, the shock was starting to wear off a little and the warm sun was beginning to thaw her fears slightly.

Astarteth, in the meantime, was having the time of her dragonet life. Flits, weyrlings, older dragons, other humans! And in her mind, they were all their to admire her beauty. She was the greenest of the greens! The slimmest and sleekest... This is so wonderful! We should have done this ages ago!

Biting her lip hard enough to draw blood, Kallista merely shook her head and focused at the task at hand. Anything that might distract her from her task was a hazard. A risk. A chance... Again, the teen started deep breathing and counting backwards. Dragon riders did not have fears. It was going to be okay. And it would have been but...

CEYLITH! Astarteth squealed. And in an effort to get to her large friend, the weyrling knocked her rider over and into the depths of the weyr lake. She paid no heed as Kallista froze and her head went under. Her friend was there.

ASTARTETH! Kallista's mind called for her dragon. Her feet had been knocked underneath her. It was enough to set off the massive fear that had been slowly creeping around the edges of her safety net. Once her head was underwater, that was it. Kallista flayed and tried to right herself. In doing so, she had already taken several large swallows of water. HELP ME!

The flailing and splashing did not go unnoticed. With all the people out, it wouldn't be hard for someone to make their way to a rescue. Astarteth had just reached Ceyleth when her rider called her name. KALLI! Screeching, the fear of her rider overrode any coherent thought she might have kept. MINE!

Noticing everyone around, there was only one person she knew, and another she recognized from a distance. Observing how he cleaned his lovely Ceylith, she could easily admire C'ren from a distance. If she ever managed to Impress, seeing how cleaning was done was important.

So focused on taking mental notices, she didn't notice Vox until Keek started hissing. Looking down, she wondered why her flit was making a fuss until she saw the fatter blue. Lowering her legs, Keek started to move now that his nice rest spot was disturbed. Forestalling a fight, she pulled out two pieces of werry meat from the belt pouch she always wore even when it clashed with her airy sparse clothing. One piece went to Keek as she scratched him to calm the protective flit, the other was held out for Vox. The least she could do was keep the flit occupied while his owner finished his tasks in piece.

Smiling at them, soon all thoughts of spending a quiet afternoon lavishing attention on the flits was dashed when she glanced up and saw the girl failing in the water. There may have been dragons, riders and others around, but she had learned early on that if you wait for someone else to save someone, then it might be too late because everyone was waiting for you.

Jumping bolt up, she tossed off her leather belt, the belt pouch opening to release the werry meat treats hidden within them. Coming out of her thin sandals was less of a problem, two steps and she was barefooted making a mad dash to the water.

High stepping it, she must have made an amusing show as she bounced and kicked to get to the deeper water so that she could start to swim. The bottom surprised her causing her to sink as well. Not a moment later the now soaked Raena was up and making powerful strokes forward towards the woman.

Reaching out, she grabbed on to the woman about the waist, now fighting to keep from getting drown along with the one she came to save. "Calm, you can trust me, calm I'll get you to safety. Don't hit me, please." A proficient swimmer, she knew she could keep the both of them up and out of danger. However, being beaten about the head could really diminish her abilities, as would a bad kick.

Not waiting, her free hand was used to propel them forward, towards where the other had been before this all happened. Swimming in unfamiliar waters was daunting, but the shore was so close, there was no giving up.

Ceylith was the first one----at least between herself, C’ren and Vox---to notice Kallista’s difficulty. At first, she was simply too enchanted with Astar to really care. After all, humans fell down all the time. It was something of a hobby of theirs, she found and, besides, Kallista could just stand up, couldn’t she? The water wasn’t that deep, even here.

But something wasn’t right… there was too much flailing. C’ren? C’ren!! Something’s wrong!! Kalkal isn’t getting up! she complained. The name wasn’t right, she knew it wasn’t, but it was close enough. C’reeeeen! Do something! because he could always make things better, couldn’t he? Of course he could! He was her Mine! He could always make things better, even if he didn’t always go about the right way of things…

The rider himself merely sighed before he recognized the disaster for what it was. All he saw was an overspirited dragon knocking over her rider. It happened often enough. He collected his things and smoothly began walking as best he could. It wasn’t easy in all the water, of course. Running would have been impossible for him. Ceylith’s frantic message wrote itself in white-hot fire inside his mind, telling him that this was NOT ordinary.

Either that, or Ceylith was just overreacting. That wasn’t entirely impossible. She did get excited about things… but Kallista wasn’t moving like she was supposed to. Why didn’t she just get up? The water was just up to her thigh for crying out loud! Why didn’t she just get up? C’ren attempted to hurry, but the water impeded his process. Raena would get there first.

Which meant it was up to C’ren to stop the dragons from panicking. Ceylith! Don’t go near them! When you move, you cause more waves. Stay still. Try to keep little Astar calm!

The Green dragon let out a mournful keel of a noise, but she could see the point in it. Neither she nor Astar could do much in a rescue mission like this; they’d only get in the way.

Astar… sweetheart… stay near me. Don’t worry; your Mine is safe… The… the nice girl there… she paused for a moment, trying to remember her name. Eventually, she gave up and simply offered, Mine knows her. She’s very nice. Don’t worry. She’ll take care of Yours. And so will C’ren.

Vox, meanwhile, was having the time of his life. After all, Raena had abandoned her pouch with all of its treats. The fat flitt surely didn’t mind sharing them with Keek; there was plenty for all! He was a bit concerned about all the screaming and panic, but, hey. There was food!. And company! What more could a flitt want? Completely oblivious to Keek’s less-than-friendly motions, Vox merely tried to make friends.

Kallista heard none of Raena's instructions. The water was already started to clog her ears and throat. Her thick hair was plastered to her back and her limbs were limp against her body. Her pulse was faint and her breathing shallow. But there will still just enough strength in her mind and body to keep Astar from going between.

Astar was torn between doing as she was told and staying close to the human who had her rider. Her eyes whirled yellowish-gray... It was distressing and she started to keen. When Raena made progress getting her rider back to shore, she began to swim furiously for her rider. Kallista! Answer me! Kallista!
PostPosted: Thu Apr 02, 2009 8:13 pm

She had wanted Kallista to calm down; going limp was not part of the plan! Fighting hard to get the shore, she didn't even notice anyone around not even the little and large greens, her mind focused on the task at hand. Growing up surrounded by the ocean, there had always been swimming and the problem of drowning. This wasn't a special Healer's art, as far as she knew, this was something almost everyone knew, especially young women in case their future children drown.

Dragging the young woman up onto the shore, Raena didn't have the present strength of breath to attempt to share it. What she could do was start the process. Putting her head against Kallista's chest she listened hard for any sound of heart beating. The same method was used near her mouth to feel for breath.

This was very, very bad; no way could she lose a dragonrider like this! Putting her fist below Kallista's ribs, she cupped it with her other hand and thrusting upwards. So long as she was breathing breath didn't need to be shared. What did need to happen was the water had to get out of her and this was the only way she knew how. "Wake up, come on, wake up. By the first egg spit up that water and wake up." Her words were not panicked, but they were firm as her actions continued. This had to work, with her mind so focused, any idea of failure was far off as to not distract.

C’ren squinted a little at the girl who had rescued Kallista, getting the vague feeling that he knew her from somewhere. Oddly enough, it was Vox who provided the answer here. Apparently the blue flitt caught the questions from his owner and responded with a series of images: food. Lots and lots of food! Oh right! That was the girl who had once watched Ceylith at the feeding pens. And she had fed Vox too. No wonder the blue firelizard remembered her.

By now, Kallista and Raena were gathering a small audience. And it was getting larger by the minute as more people became aware of the near-drowning. Murmurs went up all around, ranging from, “What happened?” to “Are they going to kiss now? Hot!”

C’ren heard that last one and sighed. For the love of little green dragons… when would people get their priorities in order? A girl was drowning and all they cared about… ugh. And some people actually had the audacity to wonder why the dragonrider had no faith in humanity. He struggled to shore and started yelling at the crowd, “What are you doing? Go on! GO! Give her some air! You do not want to be here right now, because there’s a very panicky little dragon in the water right now. She will not want to be kept from Hers!”

Usually, dragons were very calm creatures. But, in moments of panic like this, anything could happen. “Go on!”

The man’s words were only vaguely obeyed. People wanted to see what would happen, after all. But they could see the dragons approaching and no one wanted to annoy a dragon.

Ceylith draped one wing over Astar’s side, keeping her close. Your Mine will be fine. Actually, the older Green had no way of knowing that. While she didn’t remember the incident herself, C’ren had occasionally spoken of a dreadful accident some Turns ago that resulted in the loss of a dragonrider. An absolute tragedy. Occasionally, she nudged the smaller dragon to help her swim closer to shore, at least until her feet could touch the bottom.
PostPosted: Fri Apr 03, 2009 4:27 pm

Slowly, the darkness that had been crowding Kallista's consciousness began to fade away. Her body responded to the healer's attempts to clear her airways and get her breathing again. Water at first dribbled from her mouth with each push on the chest and force of air. Then, coughing and sputtering, finally her body convulsed and one last gasp and she was truly breathing again. Her lungs burned as they fought to take in air, slowly her heart began beating stronger and weakly, she reached for the only link that had kept her alive.

Astar?
Was the very weak mental voice.

Kallista! You can answer me! Are you okay? I am so sorry! Please be alright! Oh, I love you, please don't leave me.
The green had made it to shore by now and was clawing and snarling her way to her rider. The idiots who got in her way were readily bloodied. They did not matter, all that mattered was her rider. Kallista!

Kallista's normally warm ivory beige skin was very pale and covered in goosebumps. She did not have the strength to move to her side, let alone stand up and try to make it to the Healer's quarters. With her body temperature so low, her teeth began to chatter and she began to shiver violently. So cold, Astarteth.

Astarteth turned to the rider she knew and his green. My rider is cold! She says so! Make her warm? A dragon had no way of understanding the symptoms of hypothermia.

The crowd was a distant buzzing to her as she spent all her efforts on trying to save two lives. Seeing water spout out like a spitting fish, relief flooded her body. Rocking back to rest her butt on her heels, she examined the girl. She didn't feel the water was too bad, but the reaction of the rider told her otherwise.

Looking around desperately, she knew she had to get Kallista out of her wet cloths and into dry ones immediately then she had to get her to the Healer's nook. She severely hoped they had Ilex on hand just in case. Looking around, her eyes appraised every option until they fell solely on C'ren, his shirt seemed dry from this distance, and he was also apparently strong, judging by looks and preconceptions.

Being unable to give up her own clothing, mainly because it was wet and not enough to keep anyone warm, she had to ask for help, "C'ren!" thats what Elae said his name was, seemed off to know someone's name when it wasn't traded in a conversation but second hand would have to do, "I need your help, she is going to get sick like this. We need to get her out of these cloths, into something warm and up to the Healers immediately!" Normally telling a dragonrider what to do would be a pretty daunting task, even a greenrider. However, it wasn't time to be afraid of making him angry; there was a life to preserve! As a Greenrider, an agreeable one anyway, she hoped he'd help. Giving over his shirt and carrying Kallista would be a great help, or just the shirt and keeping the little green from going crazy would also work.

Not wasting a moment, she called to Keek, who was contently eating, "Spearkeek! Go to the Healers, go and warn them!" Conveying her wish as strong as she could, a second later her little blue had winked into the between. There was no telling where he would end up, or if he would even remember the message, but it was a tactic open to her so she took it.

While all of this was taking place, she had been hugging Kallista, offering what body heat she had to whatever good it could do, "Don't worry, Greenrider, you can trust me, you are safe. I'll get you to good hands that can treat you quickly." She was just an apprentice after all, but a Master healer or even the journeymen would be able to do everything needed.

C’ren was only vaguely aware of the fact he was holding his breath; he didn’t become completely aware of it until after he let it all out once Kallista started coughing up water. That alone was a good sign, right? But, apparently, Kallista really was being an idiot today. Not only had she gone into the water without an idea of how to swim---or something; C’ren was merely making a hypothesis at this point, but it was the only reasonable excuse why she flopped around like a dimglow out there---but she had also apparently chosen to wear cotton.

Cotton. One of those fabrics that everyone with half a brain knew to avoid while swimming. Even on a warm day like this, that could be dangerous. Clearly, Kallista needed a loooong lecture.

Ceylith snapped him out of his lecture-state, saying, Astar says she’s cold, C’ren! Very cold. What do we do? It seemed somewhat obvious to her, but she had to ask anyway. Humans were very strange things. What seemed like the obvious to her usually was wrong.

She nudged Astar once more, urging her to go rest next to her rider so they could try to share body heat. If the other girl was doing it, Ceylith figured, then it had to be the right thing for Astar too, yes?

Hearing his name was a bit of a surprise, especially since he didn’t know the girl’s name. She was just another one of the Candidates who occasionally watched dragons eat. Still, he didn’t waste any time being confused or angry about being bossed around. Normally he would have been at least a little miffed over being ordered around, but this was important. Still, he hesitated at taking off his shirt. That was… you know… private. And there were people and everything watching.

C’ren! Ceylith very nearly snarled; not outwardly, of course, but mentally. Even that was a rare thing for the normally sweet and gentle Green. It was the stress that did it. Being such an emphatic creature made her vulnerable to others stress, especially that from another dragon. Especially from a hatchling like Astar. Take. The shirt. Off. Now was not the mood for his strange hang-ups.

Now there was an order he couldn’t disobey. Not that he was exactly eager to run around half-naked. It was dry, at least, and Kallista needed something dry and warm. “…How much good would it do, exactly, if she continues to wear her wet clothes under it?” he asked eventually. Now that it seemed that Kallista would survive, his resentment about being ordered around was returning.

Continuing to watch the girl, she turned back only once a few moments were passed. Her eyebrows were creased together, what was taking him so long? His question was ridiculous, but in times of crises, she could be very patient, "She won't, soon as you give me the shirt, I'll pull of her wet cloths. Once she has something a bit warm and dry she can be moved as quickly as possible to the Healers." What sense did it make to put dry cloths over wet? He wasn't a Healer, so he probably just didn't know. There was, however a life to preserve so she could only wait but so long.

This is the one thing she hates more than anything in the world, knowing there are things to do and having to wait for other to do them. She could with steadiness but it didn't mean she had to like it much.

C’ren was not eager to take off his shirt and give it to anyone. It was his shirt, shard it all. Not to mention, it had just been cleaned and everything and he had no idea how often Kallista bathed and… his thoughts would have rambled on like this for a while, but, thankfully, Ceylith was less picky.

Just give her your shirt already! Ceylith nudged the rider with her nose impatiently. Kalli hadn’t spoken verbally yet, which only added to her unease. Not to mention, this was naturally an uncomfortable time for rider and dragon anyway, due to other pressing concerns.

Now there was an order he couldn’t disobey. Well, he could have, but only if he wanted to put up with Ceylith being overly proddy and obnoxious for the next few days, at least until she forgot all about this incident. Still grumbling, he reluctantly removed his shirt, being just a little self-conscious. Being a farmer out in a small cothold was more dangerous than people thought, for one thing, and being a dragonrider didn’t exactly keep him free of scars either. Still, at least he looked damn good shirtless, although the glasses sort of took away from the effect. “Come on. I’ll carry her, so long as you lead us to the Healers. Putting her on Ceylith won’t work; that’ll take longer than what it’s worth.”

((Aaaaannnnnd... I'm skipping us ahead!))

Kallista woke up. covered in furs and in a strange cot. She was wearing a shirt that was rather large for her and nothing else. Nothing else! Sitting up, she squinted and tried to make out where she was... The last thing she remembered was being knocked over by Astar in the water and...

ASTARTETH! Kallista called for her dragon.

I am here, rider! I was so worried about you. But the healer girl and Ceylith's rider saved you. You almost left me. The last part came out in a very soft whisper.

"Where am I?" She tried to speak out loud but her throat felt raw like she had been coughing from a chest cold. It hurt to breath and move; every part of her body was sore and aching. "What happened?"

You fell down in the water. Then you went all quiet.
Astar filled in her rider. C'ren and the healer girl saved you. You were cold and then the healer man made you all warm.

Water? Fell down? She had almost? Kallista shuddered and tried not to have a panic attack. Water. Her foe, her hated enemy. It had taken her mother from her and it tried to take her away from Astarteth. She knew better than to try and attempt to leave the bed. A pitcher of something fellis smelling and a cup were on a small table next to the cot. There was a bowl with a clothe and a plate with several small silvers of fruit. "Hello? C'ren? Is there a healer about?"

Coughing at the effort of speaking, Kallista let herself lay back down on the bed. This was not good. Not good at all. She was sure to get a scolding of the lifetime and she would have to explain what had happened. And why. You are safe, my little one?

I am with Ceylith. She knew what to do. She helped save you. Astarteth replied. They will not let me in. Please come out to see me.

"As soon as they let me, little one. As soon as I can leave." Kallista suddenly heard a noise towards the doorway. Pushing herself up on her elbows, she looked over to see C'ren standing, leaning against the wall. Shirtless. 'Oh my,' was her first thought. Immediately she blushed. She was a teen girl after all; considering her near drowning, any reaction should have been considered a good one. And then she looked down and suddenly realized whose shirt she was wearing.

Shards.

"C'ren. Um... Thanks for the shirt." Which was probably the dumbest thing she had ever said in her life. Exhausted, she rolled to her side so it wouldn't be so tiresome looking at him. "I mean, thanks for helping save me. I didn't realize how far out I was and I don't do well with water..."

Trailing off, Kallista had no clue what to say next.
