Another day alone. These kinds of days seemed to become more and more frequent for Wei, and she often spent them sitting down by the water's edge.
Dipping her toes in, Wei felt the soft mud ooze through her paws, and it tickled slightly. She sighed deeply, wishing that one of her friends or siblings would come out and play with her, but she knew that none of them would.
Ever since she was small, Wei had been a loner. No matter how nice she could be, others tended to keep their distance from her.

 Rum didn't know if he was supposed to be wandering away from his den on his own, but he that confusion wasn't enough to keep him from doing it. A bit slow on the concept of 'conscience', he thought the annoying nagging that seemed to be pulling him back home would fade if he just got further away and distracted himself with something fun.
Padding along, he soon found his way to some water, and with it, an unfamiliar face. Not that he knew many others, outside of his family. Blinking, he walked up pretending he hadn't yet seen her, stretching and yawning with theatric noise to get her attention.
The blue cub looked at his reflection in the water, though his eyes moved to the corner of his vision to see if she was looking at him yet. He was trying to make her say hello, because he didn't want to initiate the conversation and seem desperate attention.
Because, clearly, he wasn't.

She had sensed his approah; it wasn't hard to miss a blue cub wandering on the grass. Wei, on the other hand, tended to blend in a bit more. That was usually why she chose to be by the water, for that was the one place that she didn't blend in with her surroundings.
Making sure not to make her attention noticable, Wei only made subtle glances every now and then, through the reflection in the water. His actions made her giggle, and her ruse was finished.
"You're quite amusing." her voice was soft and gentle. Tilting her head slightly, she looked the cub right in the eyes, acknowloging his presence.

Rum bristled. Caught! She had seen straight through his ruse, it seemed. The young cub pouted for a private moment before lifting his head and affecting a surprised air. He scoffed a laugh, shaking his head in feigned bewilderment for a long moment, perhaps a beat too long, before dropping his shoulders and sighing.
"Yeah, I was trying to get you to notice me," he looked up, grinning broadly, "but at least it worked, right? I'll have to remember that, the next time I want to meet someone. I'll just improve it a bit."
He grinned, meaning exactly what he said. He looked forward to when his tactic would work flawlessly, without being seen through. The idea of prompting a response out of someone, and getting exactly what he was trying for, was excited. He didn't know if that meant he was a manipulative creature by nature, but he didn't really care. He wasn't a sinister thing, so it's not like he would use his powers for evil.
"My name's Rubrum," he offered, padding closer, "what's yours?"

Wei giggled slightly at the cub's response. She hadn't expected such a small cub to be so forward and outright when confronted, but it was kind of cute.
"I'm Wei." she twiddled her toes in the water gently, flicking some onto her heated face in the hot sun. "I've never seen you before; must be cause you're young." she leaned in and touched his nose with hers, smirking a bit. "Although, I'm not that much older." she mumbled under her breath. "So it's nice to meet you then, little Rubrum."

"Nice to meet you, Wei!" He said, pronouncing it like he was having a fun time on a mud slide. He laughed, then looked at her and shook his head, growing serious quickly. The silly kind of serious where a grin was just waiting for the chance to escape its confines and stretch from ear to ear.
He blinked when she touched his nose, backing up a step and rubbing his paw on his nose in surprise. He shook his head, which followed into his whole body, and then smirked at her coyly.
"I'm not SO little," he returned, shrugging languidly, "I bet I'll be bigger than you are soon. And then what? You won't be able to call me little Rubrum, anyway. I like Rum best, if that's cool."
He looked around.
"So, what can two cool cats like us do for fun around here?"

Wei laughed a bit; it was fun being around someone younger than she, especially someone who was so interesting. "Alright, alright, Rum it is, then." she smiled again, squinting her eyes just a bit.
"Bigger than me?" he face turned to one of comic surprise. "I don't believe that'll ever happen. Nope, you'll just be that small forever!" she smirked slightly, just waiting for the cubs reaction. "Then I'll always get to boss you around." the sun beat down on Wei's neck. She was having a lot more fun here than she'd had in a long while, but felt a tad foolish and strange for hanging out with a cub. But who cares? If no one her own age would be her friend, then why not branch out into the younger generations?

"I will not be small forever!" Rum protested, with honest concern. He did not want to be small. In fact, he had plans that involved being one of the biggest lions around, so he absolutely would not accept being small. Not even in thought. If they were going to hang out, he was going to have to convince her that he was not, in fact, small at all. How he was going to do that with the physical evidence against him he hadn't yet figured out, but he wasn't too worried.
He'd figure it out.
"You can't be the boss, you're a girl," he said with a typical childish sneer and wrinkle of his nose. He shook his head, knowing full well that she could never be his boss, "I bet you anything that when we're adults, I'll be calling the shots and you'll be following them. Anything!" Not that he had anything, but it was the principle that counted.

This was fun. In some wierd way, Wei enjoyed teasing this little cub.
But that was uncalled for.
"Just because I'm a girl doesn't mean anything!" she felt her voice rising as the tension grew. She tried to relax herself, so she wouldn't be overly mean, but she still wanted to get her point across. "Boys are so silly, girls can do whatever they please 'cause boys are wrapped around their paws." she twirled in a little circle, fluffling her tail out. "Face it, one day, you'll meet a girl you really like, and there will be no way you can go against her or boss her around." pulling back out of the cub's face a bit, Wei smirked as she let the cub contemplate.

"It means everything!" Rum countered, shaking his head. He didn't know if he believed it, but he noticed she didn't like it when he called her out on it. So it was a fun thing to keep saying, just to see how she reacted. He didn't want to make her mad, per se, he just liked seeing her flustered.
There was a difference.
"I'm not wrapped around any girl's paws. I'm not even wrapped around my own paws. I do whatever I want, whenever I want, and I don't need a girl telling me how! I'll meet a girl, sure, but I won't let her boss me around or try and think she's the boss. I bet you anything. You want to bet?"
He glared at her, eyes intense. He was not going to lose this bet! He would show her that he was always going to be his own boss!

A smirk perked up on Wei's face, and she turned her head to the side, keeping eye contact. "Not yet, little boy. You will, though." she just knew that he'd fall for someone and do anything for them. Like a little blue and white servant.
Wei giggled slightly to herself at this thought; it was hilarious.
"A bet?" Wei threw her head back, flipping her hair. "I'll take your offer," she leaned in close, touching her nose with hers. "But what are the stakes?"

"Stakes? Good point. Uhm."
He looked around. He didn't actually have anything to offer her. He didn't really know if he could make a good wager of any kind. But then it occurred to him that they might never talk about this again, so why not just go crazy with it? If they did cross paths again, there was a good chance she wouldn't remember what he had bet, anyway. Or that there was a bet.
She was a girl after all. Girls were forgetful, right?
He grinned.
"Okay, if I meet a girl and let her be my boss, I'll find you and you can be my boss, too. And I'll... do whatever you want. But if I find a girl and I'm the boss, then you have to do what I want! No! Better yet, if you find a boy and he's the boss, then you have to let me be the boss, too. Like I'll make you hunt when I'm lazy or something. And you have to tell everyone guys are better than girls! And I'll do it too. Okay?"

Such a stubborn cub. It made Wei laugh a bit, but the wager seemed reasonable. Although she didn't really want to announce to everyone that boys were better.........
But she wouldn't. 'Cause she wouldn't lose. It was impossible to lose. She just knew she'd win. And seeing this little cub's pride be shattered.....
Aaah. Such a pleasant sight that would be. It was too much fun causing a small cub to be flustered, and she would enjoy every second of it.
"You're on, little boy." she leaned in and licked his nose, affirming their agreement. "Let's just hope that some girl would actually be interested in you....." she mumbled under her breath with a smirk.
Goodness, teasing little ones was fun.

"EW," Rum said, on boyish instinct. He blinked, confused and losing the swagger he was working so hard on cultivating. He shook his head, held it up proudly, and huffed out his nose. "Eewwwyyyou're on then!" He said, trying to make it sound like that was totally what he was going to say from the get go.
Totally.
Looking back toward his den, he imagined he should probably start heading for home. He had already been out with her longer than he had thought he would, and he wasn't technically supposed to wander too far. grumpy about having to follow rules, he looked at her and nodded on more time.
"I won't forget the bet! But I need to go now. Just you watch, though. You'll be telling everyone that boys are better in no time, for sure. Anyway, it was nice meeting you! I'll see you again some time! When I win!" He grinned at her, then bounced away, back toward his den.

Wei smiled once more as the small cub turned to leave. "Uh, I believe I'm the one who'll be winning this bet!" she rose to her feet, yelling out happily to him.
It was getting late. Kinda. But not entirely.
So instead of leaving like the young cub, Wei sat, until the sun began its descent under the horizon, on the bank.
