Post factors or suggestions for other instruments and what they're like please. Cost? Size [compared to Bb clarinet...]? Differences? Tips? 3nodding
I play clarinet & heart it, but i just feel like learning something else. So I'm considering the oboe or english horn, but i don't know much about them besides that they're not cheap to maintain =.=

well both is sounding like a good idea. apparently the fingerings the same, even if the length isn't.
btw I used to be interested in saxophones so I don't mind slightly larger suggestions too whee but I'm a bit on the small side like 5' so I'd rather not play those huge bassoons, bass clarinets, and like. Flutes make me dizzy [heard I'm supposed to breathe out more razz ] My lungs aren't that great and my endurance sucks, but I heard band camp makes you perform exercises [ crying ] to change that.

You should go for the oboe. I've seen that oboists are asked to play English horns when the part is necessary... I've never seen somebody actually play only English horn for band.

i say go for a soprano sax, its roughly the same size and maitenance as a clarinet and has a really pretty sound! and maybe try and oboe but i still think maybe even, if you don't want a soprano, go for an alto sax!

Since you play the clarinet, the oboe would probably be easier for you to learn. But, in my oppinion, I'd play the french horn.
If you ever consider the flute, it's hard at first, but then it's easier as you learn more.
I'd also suggest any of the saxaphones.

I would recommend both. I do not know you personally, so I do not know how this advice affects you, but I am posting it here in case someone else may be affected by it as well.
Playing unusual instruments is really good. Not only does it fill the band by supplying parts necessary, there is no competition such as in the flutes for example. Now I'm a flute player, so I can make fun of myself. There are too many people who play flute.
I am going to use the band I was in last year as a reference.
I played bassoon along with my flute last year.
There were 11 flutes [not including me]. I was the only bassoon player.
Colleges look for unusual and unique instruments and if you can really play them, you will probably be offered an amazing music scholarship. It's an amazing thing to be able to play a lot of different instruments.
Personally, one of my goals is to be able to learn to play every instrument at least moderately decently.
I wish you luck and I support whichever decision you choose to go with.

as to french horns, don't u have to stuff your hand in it when you stand up?
I've tried my sisters flute before, and I'd prob be ok if I wanted to continue it. I think I might be able to pick up saxophones and single reed instruments fairly easily if I had to in the future since it's mildly like clarinet right? So i'm holding that thought to learn how to make double reeds & play them xD
I just realized this thread didn't quite become what i thought it would be....like how much different instruments cost.....lol i'll find out soon
btw good luck to any other ppl starting new instruments too~
