So, every season of Avatar ended with some sort of epic fight scene with Zuko and Katara.

First was the Siege of the North, when Zuko and Katara fought each other for the first time. It was epic, bringing us such moments as the line "You rise with moon. I rise with the sun", and Katara smirking in a way identical to Zuko in 103.

Then there was the season two finale. It brought us squee fits and disappointment and rage, but mostly a lot of excitement and inspiration for fanworks. It gave as the wonderous cheek-caress, looking back, and Zuko copy-catting one of Katara's techniques from the previous finale.

Then there's the season three series finales. It was twice asl long as all the ones before it, and therefore twice as amazing. For the first time, Zuko and Katara fought in a finale as allies. There were a lot of moments, big and small, scattered throughout the finale, including the scene with them sleeping side-by-side on Appa, Zuko choosing Katara as his ally, and (who could forget it) the Lightning Scene.

So there's a lot we can discuss about them, such as:
What is your favourite finale?
What do like best about each finale (or, adversely, what do you like least)?
What connections do you notice between the three (simliar techniques, patterns of events, similar dialogue, etc)?

And pretty much anything else you think to discuss. =D

Ooh, first post. Awesome.
cool

Hmmm...This is a tough question to answer, I love all of their Finale moments...

Season 1:
I loved their first fight. Katara kicks his a**, which is something we Zutara fans love to see. Zuko acknowledges that she's become stronger and gives that awesome one-liner. This is probably the first place that he sees her true power that will later effect how he chooses her to go with him to Azula, maybe even how he takes more than one move to adapt into a firebending move. I think it was a great start for them to show off their skills to each other.

Season 2:
God, what can I say. The cave was amazing, and probably what kicked me into being a full-fledged Zutarian. In fact, it was that moment that MADE ME CURIOUS about Avatar as a whole(I saw it as an avatar for a Zutara club on DA, and just couldn't help but wonder). This Finale has a real special place in my fangirl heart because of that. I love how Zuko doesn't try to fight even though Katara is beraiding him. And the way they can just open up to each other and spill their emotions is amazing, and that's where it started.
His betrayal was heart-wrenching, even though I know it had to happen for Zuko to truly change. And even though it wasn't directly shown, we all know(if only from later in the series) that it hit Katara hard. I LOVE the tension that it created. And I love that Zuko made fire whips. that was what, 2 moves he adapted from the waterbenders in one finale?! XD I also like how this time, they could fight much as equals.

Season 3:
...Wow. There was so much in the 4 episodes.
There was that moment when Zuko grabs her shoulder when Aang runs off, so couple-like...Oh, also it's amusing how she wanted to embarass Zuko with that picture. XD I'm in love with the fact that she talked to him when he was worried about what his uncle would think of him... Their reactions to Jun were priceless. And like I said, I think Zuko really does appreciate how much power and strength Katara has, since he asked her to go with him.
The Agni Kai was absolutely amazing. Zuko has finally progressed into a *cough*POWERFUL BENDER that can equally fight and defeat his sister, even in her batshit-insane mode. Zuko takes a bolt for Katara in-screw canon- what I can only see as a sacrificial love for her. He is unable to redirect the lightning, and I can only imagine that it had to have passed through his heart, something that his Uncle specifically warned about back in the same episode that Zuko learns about drawing wisdom from many different places...or just a waterbender. lol.
Katara of course heals him, which is something every crazed Zutarian wanted to see...
The only thing was, I don't think it was extended to it's full potential. I mean, they had something amazing there. Their friendship advanced to him nearly dying for her, and the only dialogue they used was "Thank you," "No, thank you!"...eeh. I don't know, I think it could have worked, but the will of Mike and Bryan shall not be perturbed. >.>
The worst thing about that finale was the kiss at the end. It just killed it.

I don't know about you guys, but I haven't touched the finale or avatar episodes since. D:

Overall favorite...I might just have to say the Series Finale, if only because of the Agni Kai and my own fantasies of how said Agni Kai ended. lol. Though I still think I might have to tie it with the season 2 finale, because that really started everything.

Also, I thought up a question while typing this, in the episode Bitter Work, what is it that Iroh says, about having a clear heart or something in order for the Redirecting of the lightning to work?

The finale's seem to get more and more amazing with each passing season, don't they? that's one thing we'll always be able to say, regardless of canon - our ship had the most development of any other pairing - you can see it just from the finales. =D

Yeah, I know what you mean - it was a touching moment, but it could've been taking so much farther. :/

I don't know about you guys, but I haven't touched the finale or avatar episodes since. D:
I have watched some episodes, but only the ones I have on my DVDs (I have from the 'Blind Bandit' to 'Tales of Ba Sing Se'). Personally, of all the seasons, I think two was the best - the plot was tighter and it had a lot of complex, amazing story arcs all intertwined together.Aang was actually starting to grow as a character, Zuko was going through his metamorphisis, Mai was still likeable, and Ty Lee hadn't been shoved to the sidelines.

Mmm... I don't remember that line. He said you have to have a clear mind to create lightning, and that redirecting it requires you to be in touch with the flow of your chi. Though, it is interesting that Iroh's warning to not let it pass through his heart came true. =D More symbolism to examine?

Quote:
Lightning is a pure expression of firebending, without aggression. It is not fueled by rage or emotion the way other firebending is. Some call lightning the cold-blooded fire. It is precise and deadly, like Azula. To perform the technique requires peace of mind.

Quote:
I was afraid this might happen. You will not be able to master lightning until you have dealt with the turmoil inside you.

although it's worth pointing out that he's talking about CREATING lightning here, not redirecting it. funny, though, how iroh says if zuko's lucky, he'll never have to use the technique at all, and he ends up having to use it twice. iroh forgot how unlucky zuko is. XD

Personally, I love all the finales. They each play an important role in the development of Zutara and its fandom, and all of them have amazing moments and little details that connect them in really interesting ways. I love the way Zuko and Katara slowly progressed from fighting against each other to fighting along side each other. It's an awesome, beautiful thing to see.

What I like most about SotN is that it's the first time Katara has seriously fought Zuko one-on-one. I think that probably made him view her as more than just an obstacle or bait for the Avatar - she was his equal in bending and a worthy adversary. Also, the fact that they fought in the Oasis, which is where Katara got the water she offered to heal Zuko's scar with, and is a place with freaking yin/yang fish. Symbolic, no?

Second season finale was just epic. I mean, it's one of the first scenes where Katara and Zuko open up to each other, and the first time Zuko ever really talks to someone about his scar. I love how easily they could talk to one another and the fact that Zuko showed concern for Katara's opinion ("My face... I see.") and Katara showed concern for his feelings ("No - that's not what I meant."). Also, the fact that Katara said she was saving the Oasis water for 'something important' when she offers to heal his scar, 'cause it has some interesting implications. And the glance back~! That moment is so amazing, as is the whole "I thought you had changed!" thing. Yeah, I could go on forever.

And then there's the finale. Which was also epic. There were dozens of tiny little moments scattered throughout that I love to bits, but I think it's safe to say that the Lightning Scene (yes, it requires capitals) was one of the best. I mean, it's the perfect example of just how far they've come - from trying to kill each other to willing to die for each other. Also, the fact that in the previous finale Aang got shot by Azula and Katara just ran away crying with him, yet when Zuko gets shot she does everything in her power to take down Azula. It's also interesting that Zuko and Aang have scars completely opposite of each other; Zuko has one on his face and stomach, Aang has one on his foot and back. I can't help wondering if those body parts are at all symbolic of anything, whether purposefully or not.

Anyway, yeah, the finales are pretty much amazing. One more thing I noticed about all the finales that I forgot to mention above: in the first season finale Katara used that technique where she pulls up a wall of water then shoots it out at her opponent (I dunno how to describe it so here's a picture), and Zuko used steam from his nose to free himself from the wall of ice before surprise-attacking Katara. In the second season finale, Zuko used a technique similar to Katara's, pulling up a wall of fire and shooting it at Azula, and in the season three finale Katara used a technique similar to Zuko's, breathing steam out of her nose to free herself from the ice she had trapped herself and Azula in. Also, both Zuko and Katara used water/fire whips in the second finale, and in the third finale Zuko used a technique based off waterbending to save Katara.

In case you haven't noticed, I find the bending parallels very interesting. xD

My favorite season in general was Season 2 because it ended in such an interesting way. Having the gang lose was a great twist. Plus the whole Zuko and Katara in a cave thing was amazing.

My favorite Zutara season had to be Season 3, though. Zuko jumping in front of lightning to save Katara?! Oh my God. I literally screamed at that scene (much to my father's dismay). The whole Zuko/Katara/Azula fight was incredible and making Azula go crazy was terrifying. The rest of the finale was questionable, but the Zutara scene was epic.

lol, that's very true. Iroh said that, but every one of us at home immediately jumped up and down squealing because we KNEW eventually he WOULD lightning bend, and that it would be epic. ^^

Ah, ok. Still though, I think it should take a great deal of peace of mind and concentration to be able to redirect it as well. Only shows that once the lightning shot at Katara, Zuko's peace of mind went flying out the window, even after that nice peaceful breath he took getting ready for it.
wink

Oh yeah. Once Zuko saw Katara in danger, his preparations to redirect the lightling went up in flames, sort of literally. That whole moment was so intense, especially when you see the lightning reflecting off Katara's eyes. The whole scene was just so epic.
