Snowdrops. Daffodils. A few tulips. These were the flowers that Caelin was able to find in the chill of early spring. He gathered them carefully, carrying his bouquet in his teeth. Though the flowers he bore were bright and cheery Caelin was anything but. His mind was fully on Mapiya, upon whether he could manage to cheer her even a little with the gift that he would bring her. Upon whether there was anything he could do to cheer her and whether anything ever would.
Adour was dead.
He still had a hard time believing it. He may have never grown close with the filly but she had been a part of Mapiya's life and therefore a part of his. He wouldn't have ever wished death upon her. He would have even thrown himself into the fire to drag her out if he had arrived in time and thought it would have helped. But no, nothing he could do now would change the fact that she was dead and that Mapiya grieved for her.
His mouth was now full with as many flowers as he could carry. He walked back on the path towards where he and Mapiya lived and tried to summon any spark of optimism into his heart. He could still help. They could still get through this.
Or so he ardently hoped.

How a creature could live without it's heart was a mystery, yet that was what every day felt like. Some days it felt shattered beyond repair, others it was only broken. On those days a faint smile could be teased from her, perhaps a soft word to the ponies that lived with them, or a gentle nuzzle to her mate on the bad days...those days she could not be left alone for fear of the harm that she would do herself.
The once carefully groomed mare no longer cared for her appearance. Her mane and tail were in snarled masses, full of twigs and burrs. She refused to let the Indian maiden near her, not even to treat wounds that dotted her legs.
The entire herd felt the loss of it's young filly, but more than that they mourned the slow loss of their leader, the only hope they had was Caelin and the faint stirring of life he brought with him.

Caelin's pace slowed as he approached the area where Mapiya could most frequently be found these days. He always moved slowly around her these days. It felt as if she was made of that strange glass that the foreigners sometimes brought with them. If he moved too swiftly around her then he might accidentally brush against her... and send her crashing to the ground to break.
That is, if she wasn't already broken. Sometimes Caelin wondered. Sometimes he wondered if she was too hurt to heal. He had once thought himself that way but now realized it was just sadness and old pain speaking, not the true despair of being broken in spirit. He had never felt the agony that Mapiya was going through right now... but sometimes he feared that he might have to soon. If she didn't get better... if she didn't cheer up... those unfinished thoughts were the ones that plagued him. If. If. If.
He emerged into the area and saw that Mapiya was indeed where he had expected her. "Piya," he mumbled around a mouth full of flowers. "Here. For you." That was all the words he could manage at the moment and he held out his bounty towards his grieving mate. He held his breath in the moment while he watched for her reaction. Would it help any? Had his efforts been in vain?

Dull gold eyes opened to look at him uncomprehendingly. He was speaking to her, she knew that. She blinked at him a few times before her brain registered the flowers he held out to her. She didn't reach out to take them, but her ears flicked towards him as she listened to his few words.
It was more life than she had shown in days. Piya blinked when he laid the flowers down moving a slow step forward to sniff at the flowers. After a long moment she lifted her head to look at him, really looking at him for a change.
"C...Caelin?"

"Yes?" His words were barely understandable around the mouthful of flowers but seeing the look on his mate's face he quickly put them down. She was there. She was looking at him and she was there. Taking this rare opportunity was far more important than her appreciating the gift.
"Yes?" he repeated, mouth now clear. "What is it, Piya? My love." She had once been the primarily affectionate one. He had been the one stumbling over the words, uncertain of what to say. Now he said what was in his heart... or tried to, anyways. He wanted to make certain that Mapiya understood what he felt for her... just in case... just in case...
He wanted to nuzzle her, to reassure her, but he also didn't want to break that rare eye contact. Because of that he didn't touch her but just looked into her eyes, deep into those gold eyes that the spirit of the one he loved was still hiding behind. "What is it?" he asked gently.

She opened her mouth to say something, anything but nothing came out. She frowned faintly before lowering her head to smell the flowers again. She wanted to tell him that she appreciated his being there, his gentle care and patient love. The words just couldn't come though so she tried to let it show in her eyes as she look at him.
A slightly panicked look suddenly crossed her face as she swung her head around trying to locate everyone in their little herd.

Caelin understood what Mapiya couldn't say, or at least he understood the intent. After all that they'd been through together he no longer needed words from her for reassurance. That they were still together was all the reassurance he needed.
But so far, his reassurance hadn't been enough for her... not for the troubles that plagued her now. "It's all right, Piya." When he saw the panicked look on her face he was instantly by her side, pressing his flank against hers in hopes that the sensation would comfort her. "Everyone is safe now. Everyone is all right." He nuzzled gently at her neck and prayed that this attack of fear would not grow. "Don't worry, my love."

Her head nodded faintly as her gold eyes dulled again, turning inward. She began to hum again faintly as she moved away from him to stare at nothing. It was as if her mind just turned off and she went into some trance.
A sharp whistle echoed across the field catching his attention. Liberty trotted up to the big stallion, his pink eyes reflecting hurt as he saw the trance like state she was in, before turning his attention to Cae. "She is still out of it huh? Has there been any signs?"
He knew that the bigger stallion had discreetly been trying to find SOME signs of either her life or her death to bring them some closer. Plunging ahead the little usdia jerked his head to the side, "We need to talk Cae...it's about Piya..."

Reluctantly, Caelin turned to the usdia. His heart thudded dully in his chest. Mapiya was still gone. He couldn't find her... couldn't help her. It was as if part of himself had been torn away with Mapiya's spirit and that part still bled and ached into his weary spirit. He mourned for the days that they had been happy together.
"I'll be back in a moment, love." He gave his mate a parting nuzzle and then moved to follow the usdia.
He didn't even know whether he had it within him to be able to hope that Liberty would be able to say something heartening. It seemed so unlikely after all that had happened...
"Yes? What is it?" he asked Liberty once they had gone some paces away.

Liberty snorted faintly as he gazed up at the big male. "Have you noticed that she is eating more? And she is gaining weight." Flicking his ears, he looked over to Piya.
"I was hesitant to say anything but...well Nene thinks the same as I do. She is breeding Cae. We are not sure how far along she is, but she is defiantly pregant."

Caelin's jaw dropped.
The sounds that came from his mouth were certainly not words, though he might have intended them to be. She was... she was... What? For a moment Caelin was so disoriented that he feared he might faint. She was... pregnant?
The signs seemed right. She had been eating more. She had gained weight, though Caelin hadn't been about to mention it.
She was pregnant. He was going to be a father, and her a mother.
"Thanks.... for telling me." His words finally came together but his eyes still had the same half-panicked look in them. What was he supposed to do now?
