Physical Description: 5'10"; 165ish lbs.; Zhaylan has no real muscle to speak of... He is toned but don't ask him to show off. He has fair skin due to being inside all the time and burns badly if outside for too long. He has light strawberry-blonde, almost peachy colored hair. Recently cut to help cut back on sweating and possible lice. He has bangs which tend to cover his eyes. His eyes are amber brown in color which would be quite attractive if not for the fact that he often glaring at people or zoned out thinking about his art. The artist only has two real outfits. His artist's clothes which consist of a dull black shirt with random paint splatters, colored sticks dust or other random splotches, brown pants and shoes similar to loafers. And he has his good Gather clothes. These are a dark, sapphire blue with brown trimmings and decorations that match his eyes color. He also has matching calf boots. He hates these clothes.

Personality: If there was one way to describe Zhaylan, obsessed would be it. Every since he was little, he would find anything and everything he could use to draw, make colors and generally be a nuisance by leaving pictures all over the place. Nothing is more important to him than his art. When he has to interact with people, he appears clueless or out of it. He hates crowds unless he is drawing them, hates messes unless it is his paints, does not like to look people in the eye or speak directly to them. Not to be rude but because he may be thinking about a tapestry or mural that needs to be touched up. When he does have to interact with people on a direct basis, he tries to be to the point and get the conversation over with so he can get back to the task at hand. Zhaylan has no problems taking orders as he has taken them all his life. Definitely not a leader, always a follower, the Artist does as he is told and doesn't dally. He is very short-tempered in most situations that take away from his art but has endless patience when it comes to sketching or trying to mix up new colors. It is hard for Zhaylan to think in a straight line from point A to B; he thinks more like point A to Q to K to W to B.

While all this may turn most people off to Zhaylan, he does have a soft spot for older people. His guardian was older in turns as were several of his teachers. He will always take time to help out someone elderly with their tasks.

Updated: Since coming to Ista, Zhaylan has settled considerably. He will tolerate people near him and is actually willing to converse with others. Though his speech is still awkward, he has made strides in actually conveying his thoughts to others.

History: Zhaylan was born at Fort Hold to an older woman who thought herself past child bearing years. His birth was a difficult one and as soon as she could, she fostered the child off to go back to work. Placed in the classroom with children his own age, it became painfully obvious that Zhaylan was unable to keep up with children his age. Put in a class with 'slower' children, Zhaylan proved smarter than most of them. He would draw and color when his lessons were finished. At a loss as what to do with him, the journeyman Harper, Caskeyn, noticed that the child had extremely neat handwriting and thought if nothing else, he could make a living copying for Harper Hall.

So off Zhaylan was sent, at the age of six, to the Hall. A kind, older Harper, Tersa, would let Zhaylan occupy himself with her colored sticks when he was done writing his lessons. It was then that his talent truly came to light. He was an ARTIST! The boy could draw whatever caught his eye with amazing accuracy and proportioning. The Record Keeper would allow Zhaylan to draw and sketch when he was doing copying records. As he got older, other Harpers and Masters would reward his completion of tasks with fresh paper, colored chalks and paints. When he got older, Zhaylan was given the task of drawing portraits of current holders, Masters of different crafts, and whomever else he was told to sketch. As his reputation grew, so did requests for his skill. He was brought to Ista Weyr for the first Hatching when a nosy blue decided that the Artist was Sertch worthy. Tersa, the only person that Zhaylan really listens too, insisted he stay since he only has one year of standing. Reluctantly, Zhaylan agreed and now finds himself very out of place at Ista Weyr.

Whenever put to task, Zhaylan asks to be in the Records so he can at least keep up with his hand writing. If not, he likes to be in the Healer's area working with the aunties and uncles.

Other/Talents: Neatness. Zhaylan is very OCD about his possessions being in a certain order. He is also an amazing artist who catches even the smallest detail. An extensive knowledge of colors and mixing, he also has very neat hand writing.

Will this character be a candidate? Why not? He only has one turn to try.
