Hafiz was entertaining the children who could not sleep. It was the hottest part of the day, when gardening was unpleasant in the summer, so it was the time chosen to give young children a nap. Those who weren't sleepy needed to be watched and kept quiet, so that the others could sleep and the women didn't have to worry about them.
Hafiz was the slave trainer's assistant. That is, he helped her when it came to training gardeners. He had been a gardener for a long time himself and relayed her orders precisely. Today he was watching the smallest children. He had been telling a story, and most of the children had fallen asleep as they listened.
But there was one child called Aimus who was still awake, so Hafiz drew the boy into his lap. "Would you like a different story?" he whispered. "Or would you like to tell me one?"

Aimus stared up admiringly into the big man's eyes. He loved the stories he told so much! When Hafiz started to tell one of his stories, Aimus couldn't keep his eyes off him. It was cute.
"Tell him about the rabbit we saw!" Whispered an excited voice in his ear. He turned, with an excited expression on his face, to face Seyu, the large silver lizard that was perched on his shoulder.
"Ya!" He yelled in excitement and turned to look up at Hafiz's face. "I'll tell you a story!" He said quickly, and without waiting for a reply he jumped into his story, waving his arms about excitedly, and acting out some of the story.
"This morning while we were in the garden, we saw this cute little bunny hopping around the cabbages! We tried to pet it but it ran away! We chased it and saw it jump into a hole! We looked inside and there was a little familly of bunnies! I wanted to take one, but my friend said not to..." He ended on a little bit of a sad note. He lowered his eyes a bit. "He said to leave it with the rest of them..."
It seemed like he finished but then he snapped his head back up and continued. "So I took a bit of cabbage and gave it to them instead!" He smiled gleefully up at the man. Then he covered his mouth and gasped. "I'm sorry about your cabbages!" He yelled.

Hafiz clamped a hand over the boy's mouth. "Shh!" he warned, "it's nap time!" Boys were like that sometimes, but it wouldn't do during nap time.
"You took a cabbage?" he asked when the boy had calmed down a little. "You shouldn't have done that. "Was that your friend's idea?"

"Sorry." He whispered at his first comment. He felt bad. He didn't want to make Hafiz get mad. He was just so excited. "I know I shouldn't have done it. I'm sorry." He rubbed his hands together nervously and looked down at his feet. "Ya. My friend said we should feed them something. And the cabbages were right there, and" He finished off, mumbling the end of the sentence. "Sorry." He said quietly.

"Who is your friend? I want to speak to him about stealing my cabbage." Hafiz looked stern. The boy could get in serious trouble for a stunt like that, and those rabbits needed to be caught and eaten.

"I don't want to get him in trouble!" Aimus protested, but stopped when there was another whisper in his ear.
"But I don't want you to get in trouble." Seyu whispered to Aimus. Aimus turned, tears forming in his eyes, to see Seyu sitting on his shoulder. Ready to take the blame.
"Are you sure?" Aimus said, choking up.
"Yes." Said Seyu reassuringly. "Go ahead. Tell him."
"Ok." He turned to face Hafiz. "His name is Seyu." He said quietly.

Hafiz noticed the way the boy was acting. He immediately assumed it was an imaginary friend. The older man smiled at the boy's innocent antics. "And what does Seyu look like?"

The boy was surprised. He looked over at Seyu, wondering why Hazif didn't just look at him.
"I don't think he can see me." Seyu said softly. "Like the others."
Aimus nodded and looked back to Hazif. "He's a big silver lizard." He said quietly, ashamed to be telling on his friend.

"Oh? Bigger than the little blue ones you see in the bushes?" he asked curiously. A little boy having an imaginary friend wasn't that strange; and an interest in nature was good for a gardener.
"Tell me more about your friend."

(Agh! sorry... i was distracted by halloween. boy do i have a lot to catch up on sweatdrop ) "Ya." He said, holding his hands apart. "He's about this big." He moved his hands over to Seyu to compare and moved them back. "Ya." It was about the length of a garden shovel.
"Well," Aimus began, "He's a little trouble-maker."
"Hey!" Seyu yelled in protest. Aimus smiled.
"He likes to joke around a lot, but he's kind. He's funny!" His grin got really wide.

"Well, don't let him get you in trouble any more, ok?" Hafiz asked.
(Im trying to think of how to make it more apparent that he really SEEs the lizard, not really like an imaginary friend...)

"There's one more thing, though. You can't tell any one else about this, ok? Your friend is only for you to play with." There, that should take care of the boy getting in trouble. If he had some serious mental illness, it would show up in other ways as he got older, any way. If it was innocent playing around, it would go away on it's own.
(kay...so now we need a scene where he is too old for games and some one else finds out, or he tells Hafiz that he still sees his friend)

"Ok." He said happily. He was glad that he didn't punish him, or Seyu. He didn't quite understand why he wasn't to tell anyone about Seyu, but he decided not to ask. He just smiled up at Hafiz.
(Ok... Should we start another thread? and sorry for the lameness of this post. My sister came back with a kitten and i'm very distracted.)
