Nehren yawned and sighed leaning back against the side of the heard beast, laying his arm along the broad course back. The beast shifted its weight and made an indignant sound that suggested it didn’t appreciate being used as a leaning post, especially tied to the cart so that it couldn’t really do a whole lot about it. But when Nehren gave the creature a scratch along the touch hide in exchange that was deemed acceptable. Not that the dark haired boy really noticed, he was lost in his own thoughts. Keroon hold was the same as ever it was, although he had been in complete awe of the towering buildings and masses of folk who all seemed so busy and involved in such important affairs on his first visit now it had grown familiar. And as such so much duller than before, the buildings were just mud and stone and straw and the folk were just folk. Although he tended to avoid the crowds still.

He’d always thought that his family and home would be enough, and that the wonder pangs would pass, but seeing his older brother return as journeyman, all dressed in finely tailored clothes and his journeyman knot he had only felt them grown stronger. The only problem was he had no idea where to go. He had never really tried his hand at any other craft beside Fishing and speaking of fish he suddenly realised why the people around him were avoiding the cart, it must reek of the fresh catch, after all he was used to it, after a few minutes with it you blocked it out or brought a nose clip. Nehran's cheeks grew hot with embarrassment and he straightened himself and looks back at the cart, it was nearly empty and his brother was still wrangling for a better price with the lord holders cook. It would be a while they were both wherry brained when it came to getting one up on each other in a deal.

Deciding it was wise to move before he feet started to go numb he moved away following his feet down a less populated side street, making sure to memorise to the look of his path and a few land marks so that his way back was secure and he would not get lost although he had always had a fairly good sense of direction anyway it paid to be careful. He’d learnt that well enough on a few of his misadventures he thought with a wly smile, and there was plenty more to be had if he could just find them. It made sense to travel to the craft halls first though and see if any of those beckoned him. Maybe he could go over to the southern continent, after all he still had a great fondness for the sea just seeing the same stretch of coastline everyday was starting to wear thin that’s all.

He was so lost in these thoughts and mental images of distant holds and halls that he didn’t see his path was blocked until it was too late. Crash! Crates full of herbs, tunnel snake eggs, pots and other cooking materials went everywhere, over half of it instantly ruined. A huge mountain of a man rose up behind the ruined produce his face red. Learen honestly thought that he was going to throttle him. “Shards boy!” the man cursed glaring at him. “you wherry brained, dead glow.” he growled “look what you’ve done. The cook will have my hide.” He snarled again and ran his hand back through his hair. Nehren who was completely cowed by the display of aggression could only mutter apologises as he backed away, to late, Nehren let out an unashamed “ow.” that was more a whimper as the furious man grabbed him by the ear. “Your not getting away that easily. You are going to pick up what ever can be salvaged and come and explain yourself to the cook.” Nehren’s eyes went wide for although he had known the cook for a long time now through his families dealings he still had a great fear and respect for the aging man who ruled over his domain with a very hard wooden spoon. Whats more his brother would see him dragged before the cook in disgrace to explain himself. His expression twisted to fresh agonies at the idea of it.

“ugh..bu..but..oh..yes.” he stumbled and knelt down to gather what he could off the dirt floor. Once he stood again the man (he was guessing a new journeyman cook under the master) grabbed the back of his collar and frog marched him back the way he had come as he emerged blinking into the main square again he was wishing the ground would open up and swallow him.

It was a good day to be a rider. The wind was under their wings, they tore through the skies like a comet, their hair streamed out behind them like a pennant. Later, one half of them would probably mutter and curse as he struggled to get the knots out of it, but for now they reveled in the moment, in their speed and strength and in their bond. Where were they now? Some way for the Weyr. No matter, no more duties today, time to do as they wished.

"Look down there," one of them said suddenly, turning multifaceted blue eyes down on the hold below them. "What's that place called? I'm not sure we've flown over it before."

L'thor came back to himself at the question and looked down through his dragon's eyes. "I think it's called Keroon," he said eventually. "We used to trade there sometimes." Yes, he was fairly sure. It looked different from the air of course, but he recognized the surrounding area.

"I wish to go down there," Raith decided, tucking her wings back and putting them into a steep dive. L'thor grinned and lent forward over her neck; landing somewhere was fine by him, especially if there was a nice sharp dive involved beforehand.

"Any particular reason?" he asked as they plummeted groundward. They should probably slow soon or they'd scare the holders half to death. L'thor didn't particularly mind that, but he did mind the idea of getting punished for it.

Raith obliged him, opening her wings out in order to spiral more gently down towards the main square. "I'm not certain," she replied after a few moments. "I think I sense one who would be good for a dragon. It's hard to tell from up here though."

L'thor nodded to that; bringing in Candidates was never frowned upon these days with clutches so big and close together. As they drew nearer to the ground, L'thor chuckled internally to see people scuttling out of the way to give Raith room to touch down. He couldn't imagine trying to maneuver a clunky bronze down into a town square. The big brutes would probably cause quite a bit of destruction to property. He was very glad he rode a green.

When his brother saw him in the grip of the large man and holding the unstable crate of dirty kitchen wear and produce his brother Andal just rolled his eyes and gave him ‘that look’. The one that he had recently perfected and was a perfect copy of his fathers. Learen shrunk a little more pulling his head back into the high collar. Shards was all that really came to mind. And now the cooks penetrating gaze turned towards him. He thought grimly about what his coming punishment might be, fish gutting duty for a week solid, he shuddered. ‘But,’ his mind protested stoutly ‘it was only an accident’ That was true maybe they would go easy on him if he just explained. And suddenly he was released shoved towards the cook.

“Well boy, explain to the master why his prime ingredients are ruined. And He was ready to explain really he was but when he opened his mouth all that came out was air and he stood for a few seconds with his mouth open like a guppy, any second now, he would be able to get the words out, please. But no, his most valiant attempt drew an odd strangled sound from his throat. “I..I..” and the cook was glaring at him tapping his foot. But the expression was directed with equal intensity and displeasure at the man behind him who had lost a good deal of his bravado now. It was small comfort, but it seemed someone had decided that he should be spared that day because at that moment someone let out an alarmed cry.

People suddenly scattered towards the shelter of the buildings around them. Alarmed at first and confused Nehren tried to see what everyone was worried about, the square looked normal to him, but then he followed their collective gaze towards the sky and gasped in utter awe, as the dragon of shimmering green displayed its aerial stunt. But even he backed away towards his brother. It was all very well being told that dragons would never harm a person but that didn’t make its size any less intimidating or give him a huge urge to pat it on the head. Still watching the great creature coming into land took his breath away. His situation almost completely, sneezing as the wind from the dragons wings blew dust into his face, but his only concern was to quickly clear his vision again so he could take in every inch of the green and her rider.

He had never seen a dragon up close before, just once or twice wheeling past his home high in the sky. So that begged the question, what was he doing here? At Keroon hold? Did he have a message for the hold Lord? He took a tentative step forward as the dust cleared to get a better look. Plus it got him further away from the cook.

Raith touched down with her usual casual elegance, not even needing to take a pace forward to lose extra momentum. For a few moments she just stood where she was, tucking her wings in by her sides and looking about at the crowd. Well, the remains of the crowd, and the multitude of eyes watching her for doorways and windows in any case. Hold folk never did get used even to the smallest dragons.

"Awed by my beauty," Raith commented with a rumble of amusement as she lowered her stance and extended a forelimb to allow L'thor to dismount. She was half serious about that, half not. Certainly she knew she was a dragon blessed by stunning looks, but holders probably didn't appreciate it as Weyrfolk could; too busy being afraid of her.

"Of course they are my love," the rider replied as he released himself from her harness and stepped lightly from her forearm to the ground. Certainly his dragon was the most lovely in all of Pern. A great shame most of the crowd was too busy cowering to appreciate her glory. "So then, do you see your candidate?" he asked as he looked about at the frightened holders, smiling faintly to himself as he took in the few who hadn't fled to safety; they knew what they looked upon. Gorgeous, glorious green Raith. He still counted himself lucky every day that she'd chosen him.

"...Yes. Him." So saying, Raith drew her rider's attention to the youth who had taken a pace forward. "He certainly has the potential, the ability to make a bond. Best you work out whether he's suitable on other factors." She knew there were other things to be considered, but couldn't hold them in her mind and wasn't in the best position to ask questions in any case. She could speak to the boy if she wanted to, but as she had L'thor for that she didn't see any reason to bother.

L'thor gave the slightest of nods before turning his piercing grey eyes onto the gangly youth in question. "You boy, what's your name?" How old was he? Certainly not too old or too young. Maybe fifteen turns? He'd never been much good at guessing ages.

As the dragon touched down and the rider started to dismount Nehren became aware that there was someone else in distress apart from the hold folk, the old heard beast that pulled the cart was trying to back up yanking his head back and tugging at the tether that held him in place while the large brown eyes rolled back in fear. Nehren thought it might just as well the panicked and fleeing people than had him in such a state and he moved to catch his great head and calm the old boy even while his eyes were fixed on dragon, and the dismounting rider, only faint murmured conversation filled the air now and people were started to edge out of there home or open their doors just a little wider.

Seeing to the heard beast gave Nehren a chance to get closer to without being pointed out as completely insane. But as he was about to reach his target he heard the voice of the rider,,and it was directed at him? No, it couldn’t be but when he glanced towards him, he found the man was looking right back at him.
Suddenly he was scared. nerves rising he brought out his defensive mask, a gentle smile curved tightly pressed lips, well what did you say to a man who’s other half could crush you as easily as look at you? So he decided to answer the question. His voice coming slowly with a forced measure of control. “Nehren. My name is Nehren.” he let out a breath rolling his shoulders as he forced himself to relax and finished the journey to the heard beast.

Putting a large hand on its broad skull and stroking down its muzzle calming the unsteady animal, and it actually worked, so the heardbeast at least was convinced by his act of calm, something told him the Rider wasn’t so dull though. He swallowed and licked his lips. “can I help you at all?” he attempted, curious to know why he had been picked out in the crowd for the Riders attentions.

Humm... Interesting boy. Caring, always good, and able to put up at least a facade of calm. He didn't look like anyone much, hardly a wealthy son who couldn't be spared or anything. Far too young to be advanced in any craft and therefore unsuitable... of course, he snorted to himself, riders ahd been bringing in near as many journeymen as apprentices and others of late. He wondered how long that would go on before someone complained. Someone always complained eventually, stars forbid those best suited to dragons should be taken to the Weyrs no matter what their standing. If that was allowed to happen, decent riders might eventually crop up to protect the fool from the Thread. Not that all of them even believed it would ever come back.

All the while he was thinking these disparaging thoughts to himself, L'thor was studying the boy. Learen. He supposed he ought to answer the lad's question. "Yes, I believe you can," he said eventually. "Might I have a word with you?" Hopefully somebody else would take over calming the heardbeast and the boy would come closer. He didn't seem as afraid of Raith as most of the others present, but it would be good to get a measure of his reaction to her up close.

"You just want to show me off," Raith rumbled. "I don't suppose I can eat that thing?" she added wistfully, meaning of course the heardbeast.

"No, you may not," L'thor replied with a chuckle. "You can eat when we get back to the Weyr; I'd be most unpopular if I let you eat a beast that doesn't belong to us."

Somehow Nehren felt that the gentling of the distressed heard beast was more for himself than the beast, since it gave him something to focus on other than his fear approaching terror of what the rider would want with him? At moments like these all common sense and knowledge went out the window and disturbing thoughts of being a dragon chew toy were being dragged across his mind. He swallowed again struggling to keep the pleasant smile on his lips. “ugh…okay.” he agreed meekly looking back at his brother for support, there eyes meeting for a moment before the elder gave his little brother a nod of assurance and encouragement, truth was he had been on many more wide reaching fishing trips and happened to be a good deal more worldly than Ren as his brother had affectingly dubbed him. He had seen searches before. His brother had wanted to get out of the life of a Fisherman and this could be his chance.

But never the less Nehren seemed comforted by it, probably on consideration there wasn’t much the other could do against a two ton dragon but it was somehow better knowing that he had back up if needed. So he took the cloth belt from around his bony waist and tied it around the heard beast great head, the creature instantly calming although its nostrils still flared occasionally it was very much a case of ‘out of sight, out of mind’ with the simple minded animal.

Nehren then was free to move forward to confront the dragon rider. Trying to reduce he height he hunched slightly and let strands of his messy locks slip down in front of his eyes, other wise his movement were stiff, Limbs hardly bending in an awkward march shuffle movement. A growing and healthy respect for the green was growing fast as she seemed to gain 10 hands length with every movement he made towards her till he was standing in front of the rider, not to close. But close enough to conduct a conversation without having every over holder eavesdropping on them. “what can I do for you?” he asked softly, egar to get this awkward encounter done with already. Even if he still couldn’t help that awe for the pair he felt so strongly being reflected his hazel eyes every time they landed on that green hide.

L'thor smiled faintly to himself. Good lad. Awkward, nervous, but still stepping forward. The boys and girls who were unafraid were one thing, but those who were intimidated but would still come closer were quite another. Not everyone was afraid of dragons, but L'thor doubted there was a person alive who wouldn't feel at least a little apprehensive of Thread. The ones who showed at the beginning they could face up to fear were the best ones in his opinion.

"My name is L'thor, and this is Raith," L'thor said with a smile to the awkward boy as he indicated his beautiful soul-mate. "She tells me you'd make a good rider. What do you say to that?"

Nehren had also now managed to drag his gaze away from the dragon long enough to take in her rider, from what the boy knew of these things (and that wasn’t much) he would say the man was quite handsome, most likely only improving in physical looks when his hair was let out of the working braid. He was also slim and tall but now awkward or overbearing Nehren noted with an inward sigh. But thenhe could have been just as Coltish as Nehren once upon a time. But he doubted that, even if it was a promising thought. People said he was going through a ‘phase’ but he had no idea how long one of those lasted and what it was for that matter. The fact of the matter this man was a whole bunch of things Nehred wasn’t but often wished he could be, attractive, confident, and holding a certain masculine grace when he walked.

As introductions were made he nodded his understanding and greeting. “hello Rider L’thor.” then he turned towards the dragon and might have bowed his head just a little deeper, “Hello Raith.” he felt that much was only polite, a good thing to, he might have made a good impression then but next all manners went out the window, his jaw dropped and all the colour drained from his face in two seconds flat. “Me?” he choked. That was ridiculous, he was a Fisherman’s son and new everyone by name and face in the community he had grown up in. Plus he other failings previously pointed out but…called out a little voice in the back of his head as he something practically inaudible to the rider. “that’s…silly…shards, a dragon rider,”

He shook his head, once, twice, three time and looked back up at the pair, and that voice pressed on, They had come here on one of the rare times he was at the main part of the hold, right when he was looking to find his own way and his own craft. One he needed something once more to take his mind from his brothers absence. It was like, well the only word that came to mind at that moment was ’fate’. And he knew that if he didn’t take up the offer to see beyond his limited world now, he would always regret it so he stopped the flow of meaningless words spilling out, pressed his lips together and started again. “I mean. Yes please.” he told the rider. “I would like to see if she is right.”

Oh good. L'thor smiled. He and Raith had only Searched once or twice before, and he was always faintly worried that people would refuse. He couldn't imagine why anyone would, but still. "Good," he said after a few moment with a nod, "I'm glad; I hate to see talent go to waste... Do you live nearby? I suppose I should speak to your family if you do, and of course you'll need to gather your things." He remembered this bit. Ha. He remembered how jealous the other youngsters had been of him. What a long time ago that had been.

"You should offer to speak with his family and then return in a few days," Raith put in. "He should have time to get ready, to prepare himself for this."

He hadn't been given time. Told he was suitable, told to pack. He hadn't minded, he'd been too elated... Still. "If you want, I can speak with you family and then give you a few days to tie your affairs up. There's no clutch on the sands right now, so there's no rush to get you to the Weyr."

His first flight on a dragon, about ten turns ago now. He remembered it so well, as though it were yesterday. A dragon as blue as the sky beneath him, that first taste of rushing wind, the rider behind him with strong sure arms. The absolute blankness and chill of between... Finding a potential rider always stirred those memories within him, made him remember too his first days at the Weyr. Unconsciously, he touched the copper bangle he wore on his left wrist, and smiled as he remembered the kind gentle boy who had become his kind gentle best friend.

Nehren didn’t quite now how to take in the unfolding events now, it was quite overwhelming who would ever have thought it? A dragon picking him? He had heard that it was common for families to get picked for impression although he had no one else in his family that had been selected and his father only had a brown Flitt, that was really how far his knowledge went. Did you have to feed a dragon as well so that it impressed with you? He wasn’t quite sure. Although he remembered a passing Harper telling him that it just happened and the dragons knew the moment it was born who it should be with. Or who on the sands was most compatible with itself. “good Talent?” he repeated in a slight daze, those words gave him that warm fuzzy feeling inside and he smiled in a much more genuine manner.

Oh yes, his family. He would have to leave his brother and his Da and everyone he knew.So maybe his father wasn’t the hugs and kisses type but he had done his best to raise his sons without their mother and he hadn’t made a complete hash of it all things considered so yes Nehren would miss him. And also Andal who was growing more like his Da everyday. “I Live just over half a days walk away right on the coast.” he explained. “I’m here with my brother to trade and sell fish. But we haven’t sold them all yet or brought the supplies we need to go back with,” he explained with a frown. He would need to complete this last task at least for his family before he left them. And he would like to write to his brother as his Da’s flitt usually took the messages to Mikel. “so we normally stay for the night and travel back in the morning.” he explained. “but you can speak to me Elder brother now.”

L'thor chuckled and nodded. "Yes, talent. The ability to form a bond, and the courage not to scurry off into the shadows at the sight of a dragon up close. Not all that many people have both of those things at one, you know. There's no clutch on the sands right now, but with the way things are there will be soon, and time to settle in before a hatching will do you good I feel." Perhaps he only felt that way because he had convinced himself it was due to inexperience with the Weyr and resulting nervousness that had kept him from Impressing first try. He knew it was a silly vanity, he hadn't Impressed because Raith hadn't been there, but it was a feeling he couldn't help all the same.

"Silly man," Raith rumbled, turning her eyes down onto her rider. "I suppose bringing them early isn't a bad idea though. If that boy's dragon comes at his first hatching and it isn't ready, the hatchling might pass over him for someone else, and his chance would be gone."

L'thor nodded slightly, so he did make sense after all; always nice to know. "I shall speak with your elder brother now then," he went on with a nod, scanning the crowd for his new Candidate's relative. "After you finish up here tonight I could take you straight home to speak to the rest of your family if that would suit. If not, I can return in a couple of days; as I say there's no particular hurry to drag you away this very day."

He hoped the family wouldn't kick up a fuss. From Nehren's attitude he doubted they had any particular gripe with dragonriders, but you never could tell. Some people got terribly worked up when it looked as though their baby was going to be taken away from them. He was glad his family hadn't embarrassed him so, and could only hope that this boy's family would release him with similar good grace.

Ahh well this was truly and improvement on people telling him he was a few eggs short of a full clutch as seemed to be the common consensus when he would rush into something that would make most folk back away or turn tail and run. He could read the same thing running through many of the hold folks minds as they peaked from their houses, but then in holds like this which were quite small and did not have a weyr at significantly close quarters dragon riders were viewed as a crazy breed and only good for taking their children and hard grown food of late. L’thor was to be glad of having the shadow of shimmering green falling across him,or there might have well been open hostility displayed. Even if there were some flitts around Dragons it seemed where a completely different matter. But hearing that there was no clutch heating on the golden bed allowed the breath twisted inside his lungs to flow more freely into the air again. He had time to prepare and gather himself for what would come.

Andal was quite easy to pick out, he was taller than most with stunning dark hair and almost black eyes, deep mocha skin tone completing the exotic look. Well weathered from days battling the elements on open water had also made his chest and arms much more built up than his younger siblings. In age he was near ten turns older than Nehren. As the hazel eyed boy truly was the baby of the family a last blessing after the baby before him had died unborn. Nehren flicked his gaze back to Andal and motioned him forward, walking back to slip in at his side. Sheltered in the stretched shadow.

Andal it seemed was also quick on the uptake, standing before the rider his long arms crossed his chest and his position tilted to one side in a relaxed cocky show of self confidence, he didn’t look at the dragon, maybe because one look or wrong move might shatter the illusion of calm indifference while Nehren stood still and watchful at his side. “So you have come to take my brother away Rider?” he asked, dark brow rising as elegantly as any dragons wing above the penetrating gaze. Not that he had been eves dropping or anything, or at least trying to, only having made out certain words and that being from spying the movements and shaping of lips only a few odd words had become clear but he recognised enough. “I’m not sure if this is written or just a lucky coincidence.
PostPosted: Fri Mar 27, 2009 1:55 pm

L'thor smiled very slightly, running his eyes up and down the brash man. Nice. Still, he wasn't here to ogle handsome men, especially brash cocky ones.

"Ones like you?" Raith asked, clearly amused.

L'thor chuckled, turning his head to look up at her rather than reply to Adal right away. "You know I make a point not to associate too much with anyone too much like me. One of me in any conversation or situation is quite sufficient; only room for so much ego you know." As his dragon gave a rumbling draconic laugh, L'thor turned back to the dark haired man with another smile. "Yes, I am actually. I do hope you have no objections?"

It seemed he didn't, which was nice. Having to choose between your family's approval and becoming a Candidate couldn't be too easy. He knew what his decision in such a situation would be, but not everyone was as caught in the glamor or dragons as he had been as a lad. So excited he had been, his dream running away ahead of him as he'd scrambled to pack his belongings and leave with that handsome blue rider. It felt like it had happened a lifetime ago, he could hardly remember how his life had been before he arrived at Ista Weyr. Amazing, amazing place.

“Objections?” he repeated Andal sounded slightly bemused by the idea. “No, Nehren is a good kid he can make his own choices and if he wants this then I can’t see me or my father stopping him, he might try and talk him out of it but he won’t stop him,” his voice was smooth confident, he most clearly took pride in his own outward impressions and his family. Althrough he seemed oblivious to the wondering eyes that trailed over the tall form. Nehren however was not and his eyes narrowed slightly at the rider from where he was standing slightly behind his elder sibling. He knew he recognised that look, it was the same as the boys around him had started casting towards every female who stood still for five minutes. Some would produce to become doe eyed and soppy following them round and pestering them. He had some idea this was meant to get them to return their affections but it didn’t seem to work very often. Whatever the case he didn’t think that look should be cast on his brother by a stranger and a man.

But at the same time his heart swelled a little hearing what the elder had to stay and he pressed himself closer against Andal leaning against his side. It surprised him his brother would accept it so easily. Leave the decision in his hands. Andal had after always treated him like what he was, a little brother and on many occasions had been more than a little patronising, speaking down to him and bossing him around. Now he realised he would miss all of those things if he left with the dragon rider. On the other hand he know knew absolutely looking at the tall and elegant green that if he was going to leave the place and family he had grown up with then it would be for this. “Andal, I still want to go with him, I want to impress.” he told him wiggling a little from the stiff stance and twisting his fingers together before him. “Da will let me go won’t he?”

Andal nodded. “Yes I expect so.” He couldn’t imagine any reason the old man would hold him back. He looked at the dragon rider again and clicked his tongue thoughtfully. “Well the way I see it you can take him back to the house now and let him say his goodbyes and back in which case he’ll be ready soon,Or if you leave him with me it will be at least three days till we get back and another day or so before you are ready if there is no rush then it seems its up to you…” But Nehren interrupted, he had been watching the dragon again, the slow motion of the powerful tail tip stirring up dust into the air at the slightest motion, the multi faceted eyes on her rider and him? Maybe but his voice broke above his brothers in the question “can I touch her?” he asked, as usual that curiosity was stirring his desires, to take risks and discover and now he wanted to know what that green hide felt like and if he would feel the pulse of that giant life under his fingers.
