It was a rather quiet day in the academy—class was not in session, after all. One woman sat in the corner by the window, poring over various scrolls in search of that one poem. She wasn't having much luck so far, though, and moved on to the next scroll.
Miharu was dressed more casually today. Her performances were not until the evening, after all, so she donned a simple violet robe, though her makeup remained intact. The shirabyoshi could have been out in the gardens, singing, painting, dancing, or even writing her own poetry. This time, though, it was imperative that she find the poem she was looking for. The first signs of spring had inspired her, after all.
Being alone did not bother this particular shirabyoshi. The many unoccupied cushions that rested behind her on the room were meant for the maids and students, for young women who would eventually follow her in the path of Shirabyoshi. Miharu herself remembered this time well—it had only been a few years since she was a student sitting in this very room. Now, though, she was occasionally called to be one of the instructors. A fine calling, indeed, but a necessary one.

Chikau panted as she ran swiftly up the corridor, her bare feet smacking dully on the floor as she traversed the building. Her heart fluttered erratically in her chest, and she could barely restrain herself from swearing. She was going to be late for class, and she was already marked down in the instructor's ledger as a consistent offender. She didn't stop in her rush to think about why the corridors were so silent and empty, and why she hadn't been reprimanded for her unladylike conduct.
She could tell she was nearing the room, and slowed down to a mere racing trot, subconsciously aware of being perceived by a teacher, and barrelled into the door. She sighed and stretched loudly, and on noticing the empty room, swore.
"Damn! Class isn't in session today."
All that effort, for nothing. She wiped a sweaty brow and slowly meandered near her customary desk, idly wondering where all the other girls might be today, enjoying their free time or perhaps working. If she'd known, she might have arranged to meet a real shirabyoshi, for some solitary tuition.
She stopped short realising the graceful older performer studying quietly in the corner. A hand flew to her mouth, and apologies flew out in no logical manner, and she began to back away, slowly.

Soya continued her slow trek through the corridor, her feet echoing with light thumps as her socks padded against the wooden surface. Sighing, Soya had not found anything supernatural within the confines of the Academy. She had been wandering around the hallways for a while, turning her gaze about in different directions to see if she could just catch a glimpse of any Yōkai that could be mischievously be bounding through the area. Unfortunately, the young maid was running down on luck. None seemed to want to play with her. Frowning, Soya hesitated from her exploring to stomp her foot upon the floor. "Can't something exciting just happen once in my life?" she bellowed into air.
At that very moment, a gust of wind from a zooming embodiment swooshed passed her. Soya stood dumbfounded. Talk about timing! Smiling, Soya pulled out small twig which was stripped of its bark. "Bring me luck Gon-san in catching this speeding Yōkai!" Soya chimed as she stuffed the stick bark into her layered clothing and followed after the footsteps of the other in the same speeding run. Eventually, her feet took her to the destination where the speeding blur had reached.
Giggling to herself in triumph, Soya burst through the opening of the door with a childish grin upon her face. "Gotcha, Yōkai!" she screeched as her auburn whipped in front of her face due to her running. Blinking, Soya finally opened her eyes to her mistake. Gon-san wasn't bring her much luck at all.

The quick succession of events made Miharu jump just about ten feet into the air. Having been so thoroughly absorbed in her search for beautiful poetry, company and noise were two of the things she least expected. Whirling around to the source of the noise, the shirabyoshi found that a young girl had entered the room. When their eyes met, though, the maid began to apologize profusely.
This, Miharu did not really see a need for. She was accustomed to hearing much worse from the drunk noblemen and samurai in the performance halls. "I-it's... fine..."
Her yet unborn words were cut off as another maid tumbled into the room, causing the woman to jump yet again. This time, she glanced again to the doorway to see a girl with lighter hair, much like her own. Only... this girl was brandishing... a stick? Miharu looked from one girl to the next, quite unsure of which course of action to take next. Why on earth would both of them have come into the room at this time? However, it was probably a reasonable question to ask of herself, as well.
"Well... what brings you two here today?" she inquired lightly, shuffling the scrolls on the table into some semblance of order. Her own reasons aside, there was a perfectly beautiful spring day waiting outside.

Straying away from the real reason of why she stormed into the room, Soya swallowed deeply while in the company of her superior and bowed her head. Darting her grey gaze up slightly, Soya tried her best to usher up a smile. She really didn't know how to reply. Her inner self wished to lie, so not show she was truly a childish being as most people would see her as. However, she was never fond of lying. Lying brought no justice to the one who told the lies.
Finally coming to her senses, Soya spoke. "I-I thought I saw a..." the frequency of her voice lowered slightly as she continued. "...running demon while I was...wandering through here..." Turning her gaze towards Chikau for a brief moment, she sighed. "But apparently I was wrong."
Soya was about to turn on her foot to leave. She wanted to write about her sudden experience and practice her calligraphy. However, the thought of the other's company filled her mind. Turning back, Soya dared not look again. She kept her eyes focused on the floor, believing that if she stared into her superior's eyes, she would be blinded. "I-I came to learn," she simply replied, seeing as it might be the best thing to say at that time, considering the area she was in and all.

The smile that found its way onto Miharu's face was a genuine one. She stood from her seated position next to the bookshelf, approaching the two girls in a hopefully nonthreatening manner. The shirabyoshi wasn't unfamiliar with the stories of demons and apparitions that the maids and students liked to exchange. Hadn't she played the part of a vengeful the other night? She wasn't sure which of the maids she had scared silly, but the point was that Miharu understood the minds of young students. She had been one not too long ago, after all.
"A running demon, you say?" Miharu inquired, deciding to humor both of the girls in the room. "I've heard that one of them appears in this classroom quite frequently. Perhaps if you visit often, you'll see it." Her meek tone and subdued smile were deceptive in that one could not tell whether she was serious. But there was never a wrong moment to promote coming to the classroom to learn, even if it meant making up a story about a running demon... not that the story was totally inaccurate, anyway.
The next thing the girl said was somewhat surprising to Miharu. Few maids and students were quite that eager to learn, though it was not unlikely that she was just saying so in order to avoid a bad situation. "To learn? Class is not in session today." Miharu confirmed. After a moment's thought though, she amended herself. "I suppose, though, if you insist, I could show you some poetry. Or even some paints, if that is your interest." The shirabyoshi, as with all shirabyoshi, was a part-time instructor in the academy. Usually they called on Miharu for poetry lessons rather than dance lessons, though she excelled equally in both areas of study. Painting wasn't on the curriculum, but Miharu was a firm believer in it. Why not cover all art forms?
"What are your names, if I may ask? You may call me Miharu-sensei."
