(For Wyv, Avid, and Aurrie. Ask in the main thread if you want to join in?)

Night was Vreka's favorite time. It was the time of the Black Rabbit of Inle, and the more superstitious of her warren were convinced she was his harbinger. They whispered that it was fitting, that she should feel kinship with the dark. But it was the moon's light that gave her comfort. The rising and setting were routine, and like some of the storytellers would claim, the Black Rabbit served it's purpose under Frith. One day he'd come for her too, just as he came for everyone else.

Until that day, she'd enjoy any small comforts that came her way. Such as silflay on a calm, moonlit night. Maybe it was due to the distance from the stinking ruins of the dead warren, but she was almost in a good mood. Any obvious happiness would be stolen from her, but to be away from the reek of disease... well, it was almost enough to make her want whatever companionship she could find.

The black doe slunk along, sniffing for edibles, and maybe a fellow rabbit who wouldn't run off at the sight of her.

Having satisfied himself that most of their band were bedding down for the night, Bramblebur was doing a few more rounds to reassure himself that there were no unwanted visitors in the area to disturb his wayward band as they slept. The prospect of finding something filling to munch on was also a welcome idea to the Owsla captain.

It seemed to him that since he had come to lead the group of rabbits from their diseased warren he has had more energy, or at least be able to keep going longer without resting. Of course, that also could be due to the fact that he was constantly worrying after their well-being and praying that an action of his wouldn't get anyone killed.

The night was still and calm. The breeze felt cool on his fur which was welcome after the long day. The striped buck stood up on his hind legs and scanned their area, his dark tipped ears turning this way and that. After a moment he sank back to all four of his paws, content for the time being that they were okay. Spying some fresh young greens, Bramblebur moved to the little patch that was dappled with moonlight. He was aware that there were a few rabbits that still lingered about in the night, but he would welcome company. It would be nice to converse while simply enjoying an evening silflay, instead of urging everyone forward, running, always running. A relaxed conversation during a beautiful night was very appealing to the buck.

He couldn't help but worry.

No, he couldn't.

He tried to justify sleep, but his active mind kept him awake and alert. Even if he did sleep, it would just mean more frightful dreams of death and decay. And of the Black Rabbit of Inle'. If he called your name, you had to go, and he was deathly afraid of hearing his own name. The Black Rabbit would be back to claim more, that much he was convinced of.

Then the others didn't want him to sleep near them, that was a problem. He wanted the warmth and security of many bodies around himself, but he was considered a freak by them, just as much as poor Vreka was. Who would want a raving lunatic curled up next to them during the night?

So he hopped slowly through the brush that offered shelter from the prying eyes of any Thousand waiting to pounce. He didn't feel them and the buck that had taken charge, Bramblebur, was surely on the look out.

Out of pure instinct, he made his way towards the black doe. Whether she wanted him around or not, he felt at least a little kinship towards her. In the eyes of the others, this entire disaster was the fault of one of the pair. he knew it wasn't his own fault and at times couldn't help but feel angry towards the doe, but at the same time he could not fully convince himself it was her fault. Besides, how could he openly blame her for something that he himself was also being accused of? He couldn't do it with a good conscience.

"Finally, the night comes and with it takes the whining of that little Dewberry." He voiced as he slowly inched towards the dark furred doe.

Ah. That would be Ninebark. She wasn't sure how she felt about the lop eared rabbit, some days were certainly more coherent than others. Yet, the others of their warren seemed to think they were cut from the same cursed cloth and lumped them together. Which was companionship of a sort. At least he understood what it was to be loathed through no fault of your own.

Still, her ears twitched and she wasn't quite quick enough to stifle the snort of amusement at his comment. Vreka tried not to take much enjoyment at the expense of others, it would inevitably come back to bite her, but oh, how it satisfied something dark and angry inside her at times.

She nodded a greeting. "Thank Frith for small favors. She's become so good at it, I'm surprised she's yet to continue to complain in her sleep." Mean, perhaps, but true. "The calm and quiet is nice, for a change," she continued, gamely attempting a conversation as she investigated for any tasty bits among the foliage. "A reminder that there are good things in this world as well."

The sound of a pair of voices drew Brambluebur's attention from nosing around in the patch of young greens. Ninebark and Vreka, if he wasn't mistaken. He held them no hatred nor ill will. They couldn't help the color of their fur or the stigma behind them.

The Captain sat up, his nose twitching slightly as he called out to them. "Hey oh, you two. If it is some fresh flay over here. It's crisp and new and there's plenty of it. You're both welcome to join me. I wouldn't mind the company."

He had picked up bits and pieces of their conversation on Dewberry and her penchant for complaining. The buck had to agree with them in part, seeing as how most of her complaining was directed at him since she was placed in his care by her father, their Chief, as he lay dying. Bramblebur did his best to tolerate it, but after long, hard days it sometimes felt as if each word she spoke in complaint was a pfeffa's claws raking across his mind. Frith forbid if he voiced his thoughts on the matter though. He did care for each of them, including the needy young Dewberry.

"I wouldn't want to sleep too near to her, lest I find out if she does." He chuckled softly, though a small amount of exasperation tinted his voice and his weary movements.

He grew silent as he nosed the earth for tasty tidbits and stiffened when he heard a voice. It wasn't Vreka... But Bramblebur. The red furred lop sat up almost instantaneously and turned his head sideways. His pale pink eyes scanned the area and his ears flopped with his head. It didn't take him long to spot the striped buck and a slight wave of relief washed over him.

Bramblebur tended to be more... Er, open minded.

"What say we join the Captain? He who leads us from danger. From darkness. From death." He couldn't help but to shudder slightly as he spoke, though he meant well by his words. Something about his own thoughts chilled him to the bone.

They were his own thoughts, weren't they? They felt so real. Death was still coming and he knew it.

Vreka bobbed her head in agreement, doing her best not to be disturbed by the red lops sudden twitching or his ominous pronouncement. "That he does and I'm thankful for it." Frith only knew she'd never have had the courage to leave the warren behind on her own. In truth, the idea of being alone - truly alone - disturbed her more than the thought of death and disease.

Moving over to Bramblebur, Vreka bid him a good evening before starting to forage. "Good eats are a welcome, good company moreso." Not wanting to talk of what to come or what was left behind, lest she ruin the mood, the doe was at a loss as to what actually converse about.
