Late February, 109

Rayan had perched himself comfortably on one of the larger branches of the old tree, back leaning against the trunk and legs stretched out in front of him. Today was warmer than usual, the sky clear and the sun bright as the last hints of snow disappeared from the ground. The signs that winter was leaving and spring coming could be seen in the small patches of green sprouting from below him, and the tree he now sat in had been growing its leaves back since early February. Soon they would be out in the battlefield again...

The former Sergeant sighed deeply as he looked down solemnly, imagining the very spot Darkheart would've have been lying as he lazily watched the wolfriders and apprentices training in the field. This had always been one of their favorite pasttimes, observing the patrol training and yelling at anyone who wasn't. But now without the wolf and the fact he was no longer of rank, Rayan really saw no point in doing anything at all.

Where was Rose? The thought suddenly crossed his mind as he imagined how hard this all must be for the female. Rayan remembered how she how howled so sadly during the first battle when Tehila had died - Darkheart had wanted to run to her, but they were leading a group. And when he had found out, he had gone crazy and that second battle...

Rayan slammed his hand angrily into the trunk of the tree, ignoring the splinters and cuts that formed on his hand. If he hadn't been so stupid, Darkheart would still be here and that would've been one less loss for the both of them. Now all he could do was allow Rose to cling to him and try to keep her from falling into another depression.

How things have changed...

"I. Am. So. Bored."

Sighing dramatically, Keeva Brady kicked a pebble as she wandered listlessly around the fort. She had only been there for a few months, but she had already explored every inch of the place. She knew where the main places were, yes, as she was lead around by her Patron, but alone, she had also discovered the best 'flirting' zone (near the boy's bathroom. Catch 'em as they leave!), the best places to avoid higher ranks, and the best 'being-alone' spot. Or at least, as alone as she could actually be.

"Will you hurry up? You've sniffed that a thousand times already!" cried the impatient woman, flipping back her long brown hair as she glared down at a young, purple furred wolf. "Really, Dawn, it hasn't changed it's scent!"

Yes, has! demanded the wolf, sniffling eagerly at a piece of wood that had fallen from a rather large tree above them. This way and that, under it, beside it -she even gave it a little lick (which she discovered didn't taste too bad). This stick was something special! It had a different smell to it...almost like a human smell. She would find out it's secrets!

Groaning, Keeva leaned against the tree, rolling her eyes. That silly little puppy must be going crazy. "It's a stick. From a tree. It smells like the tree, it smells like all the other sticks from that tree, and it smells the same it did ten minutes ago!" she growled, taking a swipe at her wolf. PaleDawn dodged it nonchalantly, as there was no real effort in the slap. Sliding down the trunk of the tree, Keeva waited with annoyance for her wolf to finish.

Rayan noticed a pale violet wolf approach his tree - yes, his tree - and start sniffing a stick that had fallen when he slammed the trunk. No doubt the pup had picked up the scent of blood and probably found it exceptionally odd that wood could smell like human. Now Darkheart had never been that silly because the wolf simply didn't care about most things, but he had heard from Tehila millions of time had Rose had dragged her around the Fort as she sniffed every which way. A grin crossed his lips as he thought of how the pup was much like Rose - and they both had that soft pastel color to their fur.

A sudden shout from an unfamiliar voice alerted him to the young woman approaching them, and Rayan leaned over to catch a better look. He had to admit, despite her only being a young apprentice, she was quite attractive: kind of short, but around the same height that Tehila had been; a brunette, and even though he preferred blondes, her hair was very beautiful. Pretty face, but he couldn't see her eyes - you always looked at someone's eyes to get an idea of how they were. Like if anyone looked into Damien's eyes, they'd see a strong determination sparkling behind a scary confident; look into Adrian's and you'll wish you had died; but look into Rayan's and you melt... obviously. Nobody could resist his charming red eyes.

Unfortunately, in his moment of narcissism, Rayan had been leaning further over his perch and promptly lost his blanace. He found himself falling down several feet, the crack of branches as he hit them and the shot of pain traveling up his body with every newly forming bruise... before the former Sergeant landed rather dangerously close to apprentice and young wolf. Now sprawled on his back, Rayan groaned as he attempted to quiet all the throbbing. At least he hadn't hit his head... or another precious area. How horrifying it would've been if he had been straddling all the branches on the way down.

Glancing up at Keeva, he noted her bright but stubborn purple eyes. Rayan allowed a charming smile to spread over his face. "You must be an angel, because the sight of you had me falling to the ground!"

"Mmm. And you must not be a very good climber, to have fallen from the tree like that, even after seeing an angel," retorted Keeva, with a mischievous smile upon her lips as she stared at the fallen man. She eyed him up and down, stopping to take in his strong features and beautiful hair. Not bad. Definitely not bad. Perhaps this place wasn't going to be so boring after all.

Filling her eyes with innocence, Keeva stood, tucking one foot behind the other leg. "You aren't hurt, are you, sir?" she asked, tilting her head. She gave a small pout. "I'd hate to think it was my fault that a higher rank fell and was hurt."

Stick, stick, stick. Tree, tree, tree. PaleDawn repeated the words. She liked them. She liked what they meant. Mostly, she liked what they smelled like. Not the words, but the things the words were names for. Giving the stick another long sniff, she raised her head to tell her rider that it DID smell like human, no matter what she thought. But...her rider was talking to someone. A man. On the ground. Forgetting the stick instantly, PaleDawn raced forward, skidding to a halt next to Rayan's left leg. Tilting her head just like her rider, Dawn stuck her nose close and gave his leg a good sniff. Heeeeey! It smelled like the stick! She sniffed again, and again, creeping closer until her paws were almost touching the man.

Rayan chuckled at her response, having know that this girl would probably be a spitfire despite her only being an aprentice. Fortunately for her, he was one of the more friendly riders in the fort, otherwise she'd be facing punishment from Damien or the like for talking back in such a manner. Even though she was young, Rayan found that she would be a good workout for his mind and mouth.

"Not too badly, dear," he replied with a soft smile, playing along with her show of innocence. If her first remark said anything, it was that she was not as ignorant or naive as she pretended to be right now. Rayan moved so that he was now sitting with his back to the tree, legs spread out in front of him. "The sight of you had me feeling better instantly. Won't you sit with me and make me all better?"

Rayan pat the empty spot beside him... only to have the young wolf bound into it and began sniffing him. He chuckled and slowly offered a hand for the violet wolf to examine. "Now you're a lovely wolf... what's your name?"

"Oh! I am so glad to hear that, sir," Keeva said with an exaggerated sigh, wiping her hand across her forehead. She knew she was overstepping boundaries, but she didn't really care at the moment. She was bored, bored, bored, and fooling around with this cute guy was just what she needed.

She was about to slide down next to him when PaleDawn interrupted. She watched as the pup sniffed the male rider, and arched her eyebrow. "That would be PaleDawn, my oh-so-curious puppy. She likes to...lick things," Keeva offered the man, leaning against the tree since her spot had been taken.

PaleDawn gave a little jump when the man reached his hand towards her. She had sniffed another man not too long ago, and almost been kicked by him. But this one seemed to be offering it, which was entirely different. Sticking her nose against his palm, she snorted in his scent. Stick!~ she cried happily, raising her head to pant at her rider. She KNEW he smelt like it!

"Er...what?" Keeva said, blinking. "I don't believe he is a stick, Dawn." Looking down at Rayan (which gave her a nice view of his nether regions), she explained. "Silly wolf thinks you smell like a stick."

"Don't worry, I like to lick too," Rayan answered without glancing up, hiding the smirk on his face. Keeva was young, but for some reason, he thought she might understand and even appreciate his humor. Most women either couldn't get their head around the inappropriate suggestions or they were absolutely horrified that he would say such a thing. Thankfully, Keeva seemed different since the fort needed more rambunctious girls.

Rayan watched with a slight bit of nostalgia as PaleDawn seemed to go about her own musings with his scent, before turning her attention to Keeva. He glanced up curiously at the girl's confusion, only to smile when she explained. Looking around, he picked up a stick (same one that the wolf had been sniffing earlier) and held it up for the pup to see. "Stick." Then he pointed at himself with his other hand. "Man."

As an afterthought to that comment, he tilted his head back so that he could look up at Keeva, offering her a smirk. "Like what you see, dear? Or if you're not seeing enough, I can rectify that." Rayan hooked his thumb over the hem of his pants, waggling his eyebrows in a suggestive manner as he lightly tugged the fabric.

Keeva raised her eyebrow. Did he now? Well, wasn't that good luck. An odd thing for a higher ranking to say to an apprentice, but curiosity got the best of her. He definitely wasn't like the other stick-in-the-mud privates that toiled all day long with their huge mutts. Perhaps this one had a bit of time for her. "Do you play fetch, too?" she murmured, her voice soft and sultry as she continued to inspect his body. Oooh, bet he has great abs...

....huh? PaleDawn looked up at Keeva, confusion written in her pale pink eyes. She knew what a man was. And she knew what a stick was. But she also knew that this stick smelt like man. Whimpering, PaleDawn fell to the ground and stuck her head on her paws. How come they couldn't smell the man on the stick, too?

PaleDawn could have jumped on top of her and bitten her head, but Keeva wouldn't have noticed. Because, at this very moment, a very gorgeous, very sexy, older man, was offering something she very much would have liked to accept. However...he was a higher rank. Damn, why did she promise herself to act accordingly?

"My view happens to be very pleasant, sir, so I don't believe any change would be necessary." She let her back straighten, her lips move into a pressed line, and her eyes dull. Damnit, damnit, damnit. Why, why, why?

Rayan continued to study Keeva from his position on the ground, quite fond of the view he had as he glanced up her slender waist - his eyes fluttered briefly to her long legs and he cursed whoever had created the uniforms. Why couldn't they have forced the women to wear skirts? Okay, so it wasn't practical during a battle but at least men like him would be able to see something.

"That's too bad," he responded to her last comment, stretching his arms leisurely above his head in a way that would allow his muscles to ripple. Then Rayan realized he was wearing a heavy coat that did not cling to his body and therefore did not allow any fantasies of his rather built body. Damn.

Glancing at the pup, Rayan thought she looked rather bored or was slightly disappointed by something. As skilled as he was at reading people, he would be the first to admit he couldn't understand wolf expressions. "Do you play fetch?" he wondered outloud, throwing the stick a few meters away.

Then he glanced up at Keeva with a charming smile. "Come sit by me, you'll be more comfortable here on the grass."

Letting a sigh escape her red lips, Keeva pouted. "Yes, it is too bad," she muttered darkly to herself, wishing she had never made that promise. She watched as the other rider picked up Dawn's stick and gave it a toss. Did Dawn like playing fetch? Keeva had never asked before...

That man had her stick. And now...he was throwing it! Jumping up, tail wagging madly, Dawn chased after the stick, after her stick. She clomped her teeth down on it and shook it side to side. She growled lightly, as if telling the stick not to try anything funny. Proud of her catch, she trotted back to the humans, and submitted the stick...at Keeva's feet. Plopping down, she panted happily at her rider.

"Er...good girl, Dawn," Keeva said with a light, whispery laugh. Reaching down, she gave the wolf a pet on her orange muzzle. "Want to play again?"

Yes! Yes! PaleDawn cried, leaping up and jumping around her rider. She even leapt around Rayan for the fun of it. Stopping, she lowered her front end and wiggled her rear, ready to go.

Grinning, Keeva tossed the stick. She watched amusedly as Dawn pounced after it. Silently accepting Rayan's offer, she slid her body down the tree trunk to rest next to him. "Silly pup," she said almost to herself. Then she realized, she didn't see his wolf around. "Hey, where...er, I mean, sir? Where is your wolf, if I may ask."

Rayan leaned back against the tree, propping both hands behind his head as he watched Keeva play with her pup. He never had the chance to play with Darkheart... be the playtoy, yes, but never in an enjoyable fashion. If anything, he was like the wolf's chewtoy and surprisingly, Darkheart never got tired of chewing on him. Thankfully Darkheart stayed away from Rayan's hair, something about how oily and stringy it tasted - whatever, his hair was perfect.

"Hyper, isn't she?" he commented as Keeva slid down next to him. Rayan tossed an arm casually over her shoulder, betting on the fact that she wouldn't mind - and if she did, he'd just end up with a lovely bruise on his face, but that was a daily occurrence so it didn't bother him anymore. "She'll probably grow out of it," he commented as he watched PaleDawn run after the stick, before an image of Rose popped up into his head. "Or not."

Speaking of the wolf, Rayan hadn't seen EternalRose in almost two weeks now, and Keeva's question had him wondering where she was. The first week, he had thought that he was just doing a very good job of avoiding her, but looking back on everything... there was something suspicious going on. Usually the reason he had to avoid her was because Damien was always on their back about training, but the Captain hadn't been doing that either. Was there something he needed to know?

"My current wolf is missing," he answered with a slight frown, realizing that he probably had to ask Damien to find her for him. Rose hadn't gone out into the woods looking for Tehila and Darkheart again, had she? Shaking the thought out of his head, Rayan looked down at Keeva. "Or if you're talking about my first wolf, he's resting underground."
PostPosted: Tue Mar 24, 2009 10:46 pm

"I hope she doesn't grow out of it," Keeva commented lightly, pausing a moment to fling the stick again after Dawn dropped it happily at her side. "I mean, aren't there already too many serious wolves?" The brunette couldn't help it; she snuggled casually into Rayan's side. It had been a while since she'd be in the arms of a man. Those stupid little boys at the academy didn't know how to treat a real lady.

STIIIIIICK!~ Watching it sail over her head, PaleDawn starting wagging her tail again. As soon as it landed, she was off in a flash. She liked this game! Stick would fly, she'd get stick, then she got a pat when she brought it back! Scooping it up in her growing jaws, Dawn excitedly trotted back and spit it out, this time in front of the man. He threw it farther than Kee did.

Listening with a slight frown on her lovely face, Keeva gave the other rider's arm a caress. "Oh! That's absolutely horrible! To lose your wolf..., oh, I'm so sorry...um...actually, I don't even know your name," she confessed, drawing a blank. She never introduced herself, nor was she given his name. "Apprentice Keeva Brady...sir," she said, throwing a saucy little salute. "My Patron is Domonique Alrads. Know him?"

Rayan looked at PaleDawn, wondering why the wolf had brought him the stick. Actually, he was surprised the pup was even willing to fetch the stick. Darkheart had used to tell him many times - along with a nasty bite to emphasize his point - that he was not a dog and should not be treated as such. And even Rose turned rather nasty when anyone called her a 'doggy,' that could probably be an ill effect of Darkheart's influence on her. Then if you called Feral a dog, you probably wouldn't live to see the next minute.

But Rayan decided to humor the puppy since she seemed to be thoroughly enjoying herself, and she wasn't exactly interrupting his time with the girl. So he picked up the stick, waved it slightly just to entice PaleDawn, and then threw it a good couple of meters. "Rayan Delamere, former Sergeant of New Eve, current rider of EternalRose," he responded with a playful salute of his own, grinning as he did so.

"Ah yes, Dom-dom," he commented with a soft nodding of his head. Rayan liked the man, but Domonique was no woman - as far as he knew, anyways. But Domonique could be quite the ladies man and thus, was competition! "Don't be fooled by your Patron, but he's a player at heart."

Rayan glanced down and winked. "But I'm much better looking. After all, nobody has hair as beautiful as mine." He leaned his head towards her. "Touch it!"

Shaking her rump wildly, PaleDawn watched with bated breath as Rayan picked up the stick. Watching him shake it, she gave an excited bark, and when he let it fly, she turned paws and stampeded after it. Faster and faster she went, until she skidded to a stop, held her muzzle upwards, and caught the stick in her mouth as it came crashing earthbound. Surprised that the trick had actually worked, Dawn stood semi-stunned, stick in jaws. Blinking, she dropped it, panted a few times, then scooped it up again and began her slow trot back to the humans.

“Rayan Delamere...that sounds familiar. Mmm, right. I remember. You must be the man the other girls warned me of,” Keeva said with a flirtatious giggle. She reached up and ran her fingers through the man’s hair, throwing a wink back at him. “But they never mentioned just how cute you are...sir.” Crossing her left leg over her other one, Keeva leaned back, her fingers still looped in his silky brown hair. “I never pictured Domonique as a ladies man. But he’s been good to me, if not a bit distant. Dawn enjoys Glazedpaw, too.”

Something came over the girl. Instantly, Keeva stopped twirling her fingers. Her deep purple eyes widened, and her mouth unclasped. “Fo...former S...Sergeant?” Untangling her fingers at a breakneck speed, Keeva jumped up, arched her back, and saluted sharply. “Sir! Please excuse my inappropriate behavior!”

Rayan was thoroughly enjoying the fingers running affectionately through his hair as he had not expected Keeva to be so bold with a superior at their first meeting. Not that he minded because given the reputation he had harbored in the last few years, most of the women in the fort were now wary of him. That and his exclusive relationship had pulled him out of the game, but it seemed he hadn't completely lost his touch.

However, Keeva suddenly pulled away and stuttered, but Rayan wasn't really paying attention to what she said. He only looked up when she jumped to her feet and he momentarily wondered if she had forgotten she was an apprentice or something. Then rewinding her words, he grinned. "Emphasis on the former, which means I no longer am."

Running his hand through his hair, Rayan leaned back and looked up at her with a casual smile. "Or if you prefer to play it that way, I suppose I could order you to do things..." he trailed off as he suggestively waggled his eyebrows. Not that he would actually do that - as much of a womanizer as he was, he still had morals.

"Now stop acting so formal, you're making me uncomfortable."
