(This PRP was started over IM, and a consolidated version of events is presented here.)

Setting: A forest clearing, where Helki and Rajah first met, and Helki's island home, off the mainland shore.
Timeline: a few weeks prior to the rut.

User Image User Image

Rajah
The copper striped stallion is asleep in his favorite spot, lazing about after a good meal. Helki has been distracted for most of the afternoon. The wind shifts, drawing her scent towards the male.

Rajah: *nose twitches, and ears twitch, finally he opens one eye, blinking curiously. He lifts head and opens mouth, tasting the air, then turns to look at Helki, somewhat surprised*
Helki: -back is slightly arched-
Rajah: Why are you baiting me, mare? If you expect me to fight for you, don't hold your breath. My mate will have to choose me, as much as I choose her.
Helki: Why would anyone fight over me...>.>
: Rajah: You are new, aren't you? It's the way of the Kirindae. Males fight for the right to breed mares.
Helki: I'm a Aririn...
Rajah: Aririn? You look like a Kirin to me.
Helki: -holds out her wings- I'm a flyer
Rajah: *small smile* all the more reason you'll have the forest clanging.
Helki: clanging?
Rajah: *nods* You'll see. Or rather, you'll hear.
Helki: hmm
Rajah: Judging by you, I'd say... a few weeks, maybe a month. The forest will echo with horn blows and bellows. I'll be long gone by then. *grim look crosses his face*
Helki: Your leaving?
Rajah: Yes.
Helki: -suddenly looks hurt-
Rajah: *frowns* What's wrong?
Helki: -looks away- it's nothing...
Rajah: *rumbles* I cannot stay. If another male finds me here, you scenting as you do, we will have to fight. I do... not wish to fight.
Helki:...but....who will I talk to?
Rajah: Seek others of our kind, if you are so inclined.
Rajah: *rolls over on his back, scratching against a tree* Mmm... little higher... higher... *purrs* yessss... that's the spot. *closes eyes, oblivious to everything*
Helki: -backs away and stands somewhere else-
Helki: *vanishes*
Rajah: *bristles and rolls over* Hrmph. *blinks* where'd she go? *looks around for Helki, growling softly. The stallion rises to his hooves, pacing back and forth as he scents the air.* Something's wrong... I don't like this. *stalks off to find Helki*
Helki: -curls up in a small dug out under roots of a tree on her island-
Rajah: *tracks lingering Helki-mare scent across the forest, ending at the beach, and contemplates the water. He eyes island and jumps in the water, treading towards the distant shore*
Helki: -shifts in her 'hole' and watches the world outside-
Rajah: *doggedly paddles across the shallow crossing to the islands*
Helki: -slowly closes her eyes-
Rajah: *finally reaches the shore, hauling soggy furry self back to land*
Helki: -yawns, eyes now close-
Rajah: *shakes out fur, then scents the air again, setting off along the beach and into the trees, tracking. He lopes along, deliberately being noisy*
Helki: -ears twitch and eyes open slightly, wonders who's making all that racket suddenly-
Rajah: *approaches the source of the scent, where it had pooled around a tree* Why'd you leave?
Helki: -feels a little foggy from the quick slip into and out of sleep- mama?
Rajah: Erm.... no. Sorry.
Helki: -sighs- mama...i waited....-still not fully there yet-
Rajah: *flicks ears forward and walks around the tree* Helki...?
Helki: -hears the movement around the tree and rouses some more- Yes?
Rajah: *stops a good distance away* Why ... did you leave?
Helki: -feels confused and opens eyes more- but mama....-blinks and looks at the hooves not that far off- Those aren't mama's -she murmurs-
Rajah: *softly* No... I'm not your mother, Helki. I'm Rajah.
Helki: -shrinks further into the hole- what do you want?
Rajah: I would like *he stresses the word* to know why you left.
Helki: because....I didn't have a reason to stay.
Rajah: Did you have a reason to leave?
Helki: I have many reasons to leave the main land.
Rajah: *sits down and wraps his tail around his forelegs* That's not what I asked, but we'll follow your line of reasoning. Why leave the mainland?
Helki: -sounds slightly muffled- Why did I even bother going to the main land that fateful day.....I should have just stayed here. I'm too much of a freak to leave. And what if I miss my mama...what if she comes back and I miss her...
Rajah: *stunned silence* f-freak? Is that how you think of yourself? *shakes head* Helki... I am sorry, if you took my comments to mean you should leave... I ... *rumbly sigh* did not mean them that way. I am surprised you don't have every bachelor within miles lined up to fight for your favor. *his voice turns bitter*
Helki: I'm not surprised. -she said quietly avoiding the first part of what he said-
Rajah: Well I am. There is nothing wrong with your appearance, and regardless... the outside is a poor indication of what is on the inside.
Helki: if you say so.
Rajah: *tail flicks in exasperation* I do prefer at least seeing who I am addressing. Why are you hiding?
Helki: Why would I need to hide here? I'm simply in my nest resting...flying over here isn't always easy.
Rajah: Mhrr... alright. Would you do me the kindness of having your company then? I feel a bit silly talking to a tree.
Helki: I'd say why don't you come in here instead but I doubt you'll fit. I'm surprised mother did. -she still seemed reluctant to come out-
Rajah: ... I doubt you'd want me in there right now. I'm wet, and I smell like soggy fur and salt. *sheepishly flattens ears*
Helki: I can help with that...salt is good after exerting much energy. Tasty too. -by now her nose peeked out from around a root and sniffed the air lightly-
Rajah: *blinks, somewhat surprised, but cautiously approaches Helki's nest* Well, I doubt fitting will be a problem. Most of my size is fur... I'm not as big as I look when I'm dry.
Helki: -she soon found herself looking up at him- I dunno...most other kirin are bigger than me for I am oddly small...getting in and out is the hardest part.....-her large pink eyes watched him-
Rajah: *he ducks his head down, examining the opening* Clever... a well hidden nest. If it wasn't for your pretty nose sticking out, it'd be very easy to miss. *he steps back and gives himself one more shake, shedding seawater, leaving his fur sticking out at odd angles*
Helki: -she once again vanished inside and was heard shifting about- You should have room now -her voice was heard from the other side of the nest. It was decently large even though she was the only occupant- I didn't make it -she suddenly said- I doubt I could make a nest...
Rajah: I wouldn't know how either. Mostly I sleep in trees, or where ever I happen to be when the sun goes down. *he touches the edges of the opening with his muzzle, fine whiskers judging the size* I'll fit... just. *Rajah contorts around the gnarled roots, twisting his body to make it inside, blinking in the comparative gloom*
Helki: -her eyes practically glowed in the gloom along with her antlers as if they caste an inner light- Mother never taught me....she's the one who made this one...I was born here. -she was perfectly curled up about a foot away from him give or take- Sorry if I smell -she suddenly said-
Rajah: *he'd been tracking her scent so long, he'd nearly forgotten what it meant, and the effect it'd have on him* It's alright. *closes eyes momentarily, golden amber glinting in reflection* Afraid I don't smell like flowers either, right now. I like swimming, but the clean up afterwards isn't so fun, especially in the ocean. *a glance around the nest (anything to avoid looking at her directly right now, until he had himself firmly under control) revealed the perfect shape of it, far too perfect to be natural* I've never seen one quite like this. The drying salt was beginning to itch, and he absently licks at his fur, unsure of how to proceed.*
Helki: -she didn't pay it much mind. it was the only nest she had ever seen and so she wasn't able to compare, she watched as he licked at his fur and then tentatively stretched her neck out nipped at his fur. the salty tang of the ocean laced his fur pretty good and she nipped him again-
Rajah: "Hehe, that tickles..." it was easy to move closer, her scent nearly demanded it, called to a part of him he had hoped was long buried. He folds his legs under, dropping to the floor beside Helki, gently touching one of her wings with his nose. "I envy you.. I can only imagine what it's like to fly. You think yourself odd? I think you're marvelous." He tucks his head down, looking somewhat abashed.
Helki: -she leaned away from him and eyed him- Well...I am odd...I'm a mutated seraph airion. But being able to just fly off is a handy trait. -a faint pink tinge appeared on her cheeks- I don't think I'm all that marvelous.

"And I don't seem odd to you? I don't exactly fit the standard image of a Kirin..." The copper coated male twitched his nose, rumbling and licking the salt fastidiously from his forelegs. Each one terminated in four sharply pointed toes, each with a spade-like hoof at the tip. Rajah did his best not to stare at Helki, focusing on the task at hand.

Two very different feelings warred within the Pryrin's mind, one quite pleasant, the other quite the opposite. His ears flick back in mental distress.

"Helki... " He clears his throat. "How many seasons do you have behind you, exotic winged mare, if I may ask?"

She looked up at him. "How would I build a standard image of a kirin when until recently the only kirin I had know was my mother." It was a rather interesting situation to be faced with indeed for she had been left to her own devices for far too long. Not to mention her having been very much alone til she had decided to leave her island and fly to the main land.

"Season?" she asked blinking at him.
PostPosted: Thu Mar 19, 2009 7:35 pm

Rajah nodded. "Season... the passing from new leaf, to hot growing time, leaf fall, and cold snow. How many changes of season have you gone through? You've at least a few, you're not a foal."

"Mhrm, good point." The stallion nodded, "You'd be hard pressed to know what's normal if you've been isolated on this island ... that sounds lonely." His eyes take on a distant vacant look, as if he's remembering things long past.

Helki seemed to be thinking about it as if she had to think about it. She didn't realize that how many seasons one was alive really was important. Or maybe it wasn't but he wanted to know and she really had to think about it.

"Uhhh....6?" she said some what unsure of herself.

"I guess I could have left....I only stayed in hopes mother would come back...."
PostPosted: Thu Mar 19, 2009 7:57 pm

Year and a half... Rajah looks the winged mare over quickly. Yes, that wouldn't be unreasonable, for her size. She's never bred before, no wonder she's clueless about the rut.... His heart sank a little, not really wanting to ask the next question but feeling duty bound to inform her.

"How much did your mother tell you about breeding, if anything at all?" Rajah asked quietly, clamping his ears down against his skull with unhappiness. This should have been her dam's job, to have one mature and on the verge of mating, and yet unaware of the fact... it's not right. "I'm ... sorry if it's a personal question." He adds, belatedly. "I've never been very good at anything but straight talk."

Helki's tail curled up around her suddenly. It seemed to move rather snake like as it was prehensile. The feathers on the end sat under her chin and she preened them lightly. Her wings rested against her backside making her look fluffy feather-wise.

His question made her stop in mid preen and her eyes sought his. "Breeding? I think mother left before getting to that because I have no memory of it. She taught me basic survival skills."
PostPosted: Thu Mar 19, 2009 8:36 pm

"I was... afraid of that." Rajah looked stricken, nervously licking one of his already clean forelegs. He closes his amber eyes for a moment. trying to squelch the butterflies in his stomach. Where do I begin.... Her tail caught his attention, tracking it as it flicks forward dexterously. I can't believe she thinks herself inferior... such specialness should be treasured, like the Goddess given gift is is.

"I can't tell you everything you should have been told already, Helki... if your dam was here, or in her absence, a herd mare, would have told you this and more well before now. The rutting season is drawing close. I can ... scent it on you. Quite strongly, in fact. Any Kirin you come close to will be able to detect the same. The rut is the way of Kirindae, to ensure the strongest prevail." His lips twist into a silent snarl. "It's supposed to be relatively bloodless, it doesn't always turn out that way. "

"The important point is that your scent... will drive males to seek to win your favor, to earn the right to breed. If another adult male were here now, we would fight, it's one of our most deeply rooted instincts. To prove we are the fittest, the best sires."

Rajah looks uncomfortable again, shifting his weight back and forth restlessly. "And when there are no more challengers, the best stallion will claim you as his mate, Helki... you may not believe me, but your own body will make sure of the fact. It's your gender's strongest drive. To bear young." The striped stallion lowered his head onto his forelegs miserably.

Wonderful.. I've just told her she'll end up being mounted, and have no choice about it, and there's little time to let this all sink in. I'd be surprised if she doesn't throw me out right now.

"I'll go now, if you want." He looks towards the opening of the nest, unwilling to face Helki.

Helki just stared at him. So this was what it all came down to in the end. It was a mere statement in her mind. Not a question. This was some important information her mother had failed to tell her before vanishing that day so long ago...at least it seemed a while ago.

"So...I smell because my body wants to bare young? And that will drive stallions to wanna fight over me so they can father those young....and I just let them?"

She blinked. "You don't have to leave.....can't really do anything to me in here and I can get out faster than you anyway...."
PostPosted: Thu Mar 19, 2009 9:04 pm

He had already half-risen to depart before her comments caused him to abort the action, flopping back down on his furred belly. With a look of surprise, Rajah turns towards the mare, face showing his confusion.

"I expected... mhrr, I made an assumption, which was unfair. That you would be angry, and wish me gone." The stallion fluffs out his tail, curling it comfortingly about his body. "You realize... the longer I stay, the harder it is going to be for me to go." Already he was loathe to leave her side, though the reasons were complicated. True enough, her scent promised of things to come, stirred feelings of longing in him that had laid dormant for more than a full turn of seasons. It doesn't hurt that she's the most interesting mare I've ever seen. The faintest of smiles darts across his face. And no matter how uncomfortable it makes me, she deserves to know what happens.

"Yes.. the change of scent, it signals to all that you are mature, that your body is ready to carry eggs. It also drives any male nearby to compete, I'm not sure why. Something about mare scent... it drives us beyond all logic, to the limits of our endurance. It's frightening. It's also exhilarating, intoxicating. " I remember... before it all went horribly wrong.

"I can't explain the last part, I honestly don't know... all I can tell you is that I've never seen a mare refuse a mate. If you don't wish to breed, you'll have to stay far away from all Kirin if you can. It's not easy."

"You are free to leave when ever you please. I'm just telling you that you don't have to as well." She was watching him with a unreadable expression. Something she schooled herself with even though no one was around to read her expressions.

"So I'm guessing me suddenly having thoughts that it would be nice to have foals around probably comes with this......breeding business. Although I don't see how I can have foals...I'm so small....." she grew quiet again. "Maybe that's why mother left. She thought I was too weak to survive and cut her losses and left..."

Helki was silent as that accusation was left hanging in the air. It was possible her mother thought her only offspring was too weak to survive no matter what and she left. Helki was no longer looking at Rajah now but out through one of the holes near her.
PostPosted: Thu Mar 19, 2009 9:53 pm

Rajah shook his head slightly, copper mane falling over his short cupped ears. "If I needed any confirmation that you are just of age, that would do it. Helki, I do not wish to leave, truthfully. Part of that is the season, I will be perfectly honest with you. The bigger part of it has nothing to do with your scent. You are fascinating.. I've never seen anyone so gifted. I know not how you were raised, but in my clan, differences were to be celebrated, not shunned. They make us stronger, versatile."

Rajah rumbles softly, eyeing Helki. He did not want to give the wrong impression, but she truly seemed to be in need of company. He was feeling rather lonely himself, these days. It was fun being free, going wherever the winds blew, but sometimes it's nice to have someone to walk with. Making up his mind, the copper coated stallion leans gently against her side, rubbing his muzzle along the ridge of her mane as he had seen mares do with their foals, as his own mother used to comfort him.

"Yes... thoughts of foals, of being with others, dislike of being alone, those are all part of the rut. Should you conceive, your belly plates will soften, and stretch, to accommodate the young. You'd also be very hungry while they are growing."

His eyes glittered, reflecting the prismatic light of her antlers. "You are not weak. You have survived, by yourself, for a long time. That is no small feat, Helki. Many loners do not make it through their first turn of seasons."

Helki's head turned so that she was looking at him again. "I'm a rather quick learner. Sometimes you have to be in order to survive...."

She watched as he moved closer and she felt the heat of his body next to her's. He had a salty and musky scent to him. And in a way it was comforting. Especially feeling his soft muzzle on the back of her neck. Her eyes fluttered closed. It felt somewhat as if her mother was there with her, but in a way it was also different.

"I'm always hungry," she muttered softly, her eyes still closed but only lightly. "Maybe one day I will have young....but not with just anyone....." she sighed.
PostPosted: Thu Mar 19, 2009 10:19 pm

This was dangerous, this business of grooming... nose right against her mane, it was impossible to avoid the wonderful odors of her skin, delightfully complex... the soft spice that was her own, the cloying tease of fertile mare, strong forest pine and burnished fur. Rajah had to forcibly drag his mind out of the scents, reluctantly.

"The hunger is part of the impending season... probably also because you are flighted. Flying requires a lot of energy, does it not? " He nudges her arched neck. "Helki, look at me. This is important, and I want to make sure you understand. If I stay here... soon, several sun circles from now, maybe sooner, we ... may end up mating. If you do not want this, I have to leave, because I would prefer that you weren't forced into something you would regret." He looked at her face intently, hoping she would feel the sincerity behind his words. A lingering sadness settled in the corners of his mouth.

"MMmmm...yeah...flying requires lots of energy..."she muttered. Her breathing wasn't so regular anymore and seemed to sound louder to her ears before his words snapped her back to reality. Her eyes opened and bore into his.

"I can not see myself regretting something if it is you who I do it with. You have been so kind to me," she paused for a moment. "Like I had said before, it is up to you if you wish to stay or go. If you do stay I just wish that not matter what happens that you promise to be gentle." She only gave him a faint smile. "I am small after all and you much bigger than I," she had meant that last remark to be some what funny. "Your no longer a stranger to me and for that I would be willing if it's what you wanted. But.....I worry that maybe you would get hurt if another stallion should happen along who ended up being dead set to have me...."
