Mkia lounged, feeling relaxed as she watched her sons while her mate was out searching for food. She couldn't help but notice how much happier she was now, knowing that she had sons who wouldn't leave her alone when Kenya had to go and find food for them. Sure, they were a little strange, but her boys were happy and she finally had the family she had wanted for so long. A guarentee that no one would ever leave her. And she simply adored her children, and was happy to keep them out of their fathers way when he was in a bad mood. Which was often, but Kenya's grumpy nature was part of why she loved him.
"A'kigeni! Be careful now!" She called to her near-twin-son, who was the only one of her boys that had the same colored eyes as she did. A'kigeni looked back at his mother and sighed, deciding not to bother climbing the tree he was going to go up after all. No point in needlessly worrying Mkia... he knew she could be a little nurotic when it came to her sons. His father had told him it was because she was afraid of being alone, so it was their duty as sons to make sure that nothing ever happened to their mother.
He took that lesson to heart. 'Never leave her alone. If you do, we'll leave you behind.' that was the rule. He could only imagine that it similarily applied to falling out of a tree and dying. A'k didn't imagine his father would eat him if that happened, like they did other animals... like lions. But he didn't want them to leave his body behind either... maybe?

Not one for such heavy thoughts as his brother, Rara peered around the tree at A'k and their mother as he twitched his tail in anticipation. Things were as things were. There was no need to question the why, really, only know the what. And the what was that the beasts who ate the grass were friends, and those who preyed on his friends were food for him.
That... and he really didn't like finding his friend's bellies ripped open and their eyes glassy. Their herds had probably left them behind because they'd left their mothers alone. That was how it was for his family, after all. A group, together...
And vulnerable!
Bounding out from behind the tree as A'kigeni looked back at their and tackled him. "Gotcha!"

"GAK!" Was about all A'kigeni managed to get out as his brother tackled him. "Ow! Rara that hurt!" The leopard complained, flailing around. "I was talking to mom!" He bemoaned, though Mkia only smiled and laughed lightly, watching the brothers play.
"Very good suprise attack Rara!" She told him with her happy-go-lucky smile settling on her face. She knew that A'k was generally far too gentle in spirit to fight back... but he would have to learn with the prey they hunted down. Lions weren't known well for going down without a fight after all. At least Rara was getting in the spirit of things though!
A'kigeni rolled over, running to escape his brother, his nose twitching indignantly, "I was trying to climb that tree! Where are your manners!?" Not that manners were exactly a first priority or anything. A'k just really hated being suprised.

"Soooo? You could be pounced at any time! Sharp eyes! Sharp ears!" He gnawed on his brother another time before pushing off and bounding over to their mother, to push in between her legs and curl up, "You know!"
Rara laughed as he pawed at Mkia's legs playfully, rolling onto his back, "Not fast enough if I got you!" Grinning, the cub flashed a toothy smile at A'k.

A'k rolled his eyes a little, wandering over and grumbling under his breath as he went, "Moooom... make him stop picking on me! I don't want to fight or get attacked! All that's stupid! Creatures could be doing way better things than that!" He declared.
He had always hated being involved in that kind of thing. A'kigeni was generally more interested in bugs and what they were doing than what anything much larger than a bird was up too. He was just... kind of like that.
Mkia smiled, cheerful as ever as she let Rara push himself under her legs. She was always happiest when she was with her family, even if Kenya was busy, she always had her boys around to take care of. And they took care of her too, she supposed. She often wondered what would have happened if she hadn't met Kenya and had her children... But in the end, she was just glad she had.
She grinne widely, putting her paw on her son's head and pushing him down a little, "Well, you may pick on A'k, but don't forget, he has a big mommy too, who will just as soon pick on you as you will him." She reminded him, protective of all her boys. After all, she wouldn't have liked it if people made fun of her for being afraid of being alone. She didn't want A'k to be upset... but stunting Rara's growth certainly wasn't an option either!

"Like whaaat?" He replied to his brother, echoing his tone, "Eating bugs? Bugs are gross! Mmph!" When his mother pressed his head down, he struggled, mewling in response.
"That's not faaair!" He moaned, choosing instead to roll on his back and gnaw on his mother's paw, kicking upwards with his hind legs. "A'kigeni never wants to wrestle. It's no fun." He frowned seriously despite his continuing to kick Mkia's foreleg.

"I don't like wrestling! It's stupid!" A'kigeni bemoaned, sitting down and sulking, looking at his mother, "And mom, tell him I don't eat bugs! I DON'T! I like to look at them! They're cool!" He informed his brother, not laughing despite how amusing he thought his mother holding the other boy down was.
Mkia smiled and sighed a little, keeping Rara where he was, but she stroked his fur anyway, "Both of you, stop being such whiners! What would your father say about that kind of attitude boys?" If Kenya had spoken to the boys much... which he rarely did. "Rara, you have two other brothers who wouldn't mind wrestling at all! And A'k, you have to learn to fight back sometime! We eat lions, and they're very big creatures! Much bigger than bugs."

"Very big!" Rara echoed, grinning toothily at A'ki, "They'll eat YOU if you don't eat them. The horned ones will thank you too." Horned ones seemed to enjoy his company, the antelope and the giraffes and the water buffalo. He'd run into a baby antelope and had been utterly surprised when it cried out and asked that he not eat it.
A long, curious conversation had been sparked then, and the antelope had left even more confused then Rara was. Why would you eat the horned ones? They ate lions and cheetahs, the ones who liked to hurt and kill. It made no sense to the young leopard.

"Will not! Will not!" A'k cried back, batting at his brother angrily. He didn't normally throw tantrums, but he could when he felt like someone was ganging up on him. "And the horned ones are big and scary! You shouldn't go and play with them. They always run away from me!" He had never been a big fan of them.
Mkia smiled, "The horned ones are perfectly reasonable. You boys both have to learn to get along with all of them, now won't you? And come on now... only some lions and cheetahs will try and eat you." She explained carfeully, "You don't have to worry about the little ones. They don't do much."

"They run from you because you're the bug eater!" Rara replied in quite a matter-of-fact tone. "Or... it's because you're so small. You scare them! I'll show, if you like A'k~ They're very confusing." Nodding, ears pricked and tail flicking back and forth, he wiggled his way out from his mother's embrace and moved over to where A'k was to headbutt his shoulder.
"Yeah... but they get big, mama. And then try to eat us." Wasn't that obvious? It seemed to him it was. And if they didn't try to eat you, they tried to just kill you. Not very nice any way you looked at it.

A'k very nearly fell over when his broher headbutted him. He had never been very good at expecting that kind of thing. But then, with anything physica... A'k had always been a little lacking. "I don't EAT bugs! Mom make him stop!" He bemoanded, getting his balance back. "And hunting is boring... and the animals don't like me. Will you really show me how?"
He had always hated not knowing how to do things. And his brother was so much better at getting trust from the green-eaters... A'k just had his bugs. And he liked his bugs, for that matter.
Mkia nodded, "Of course they get big. And once they get big, we have more to eat. So it would be silly to kill the little ones, now wouldn't it?" Plus, Mkia just generally didn't like the idea of killing children. Even when she had eaten her natural prey, she had never killed their young. Even when it would have been easier to do it that way.
"And some lions can be pleasent to... not all, but some of them." She explained, nodding her head, "The first lion I met was very friendly. Imagine my suprise when I found out that most of them are quite mean."

"Ya, I'll show you. If you show me the great big bugs you're so in love with. Maybe I'll see why you think they're so much better." Rara replied, rearing up to hook forelegs over his brother and use him as a leaning post as he looked out over the area. "You make a good look out...."
Tail flicking, the young leopard glanced back at his mother when she spoke, drinking up the information she was sharing, "But... what if you're starving? The big ones fight back. Do the little ones do as well? ... I can't imagine a good lion. Maybe a good to eat lion, but not a good one like a friend."

Mkia sighed a little, smiling as she pet her son's head. She would never tell him that for most of her life, she had gone the other way around and hunted prey animals instead of lions. She even felt alittle guilty about killing lions now... she did know that there could be good ones out there. Somewhere. She wondered what those she had known were up to now...
"If you were going to die, I suppose you'd have no choice. But if you eat all the young ones today, remember dear, there might not be any left for you tomorrow." She told him, tapping his nose affectionatly with her paw.
A'k stuck his tongue out at his brother, "Yeah stupid! You kill all the little ones, there'll be no big ones for us to eat some day!" He said, bristling with pride at his insult. Then he tried to struggle out from under his brother.
"And I'll only show you if you promise not to eat them, or to squish them!" He said, looking at his mother, pleading, "Make him promise he won't mom! I don't want him to kill my projects!"

"Really....?" He mused, thinking that tidbit of information his mother had pointed out over seriously. Eat now but not later? Sounded like what the hyenas and lions did to those they hunted.... it wouldn't be fair, right? If you depleted your food source completely, how would you eat in the future? "I guess..." he mumbled after a minute.
"Yeah! But you can't survive on bugs alone!" He quipped, gnawing on an ear. "Projects? Whatchu doing to them? Making colours to smear on the rocks like the baboons do? Squish squash~ Red and blue paw prints?" Rara knew he would bother his brother with comments if he held no interest in the crunchy, squishy things under foot.

"There, you see?" Mkia smiled, patting her son's head lovingly, "Now you're smarter than half the creatures out there, with information like that. You won't starve anymore." She watched her boys, heaving a little sigh of pride. She wanted them to be smart and strong when they grew up... but best not to think about them growing up. Then they might want to leave...
"I DON'T eat bugs!" A'k bemoaned, obviously still mad about that. He turned over, taking a play-swipe at his brother, "And I don't kill them either! That would be stupid! I just like to watch them do stuff! They're way cooler than your stupid animal friends."
