Wind blows a bit stronger on the fourth evening Twana had planned to meet her older male friend, Zuberi. She chose a very common place to lay, in the meadow they sort of adopted as their 'hideaway' during their late night adventures. Her maw lay on the cool welcoming ground. The wind whipped her fur about and this night she felt very much attuned to the earth. Soon light droplets hit her nose and she goes nearly cross-eye'd looking at the black at the end of her face. Sticking out her tongue she laps it away and after four attempts at ridding the irritable drops she gives up.
It wasn't long now, Zuberi would be here any moment and then it happens. A loud crash and then silence. Her eyes widen at the sudden sound. This was new to her. In a split second she is sitting up and staring at the sky. Her ears pricked forward and nose lifted trying to catch a scent of the noise. She gives for a moment then it happens again CRASH and then a flash of light. She's astonished and glued to the sky. Thoughts of Zuberi dancing about her mind with this new discovery.

Zuberi had left his pack land late this evening, it was already beginning to rain as he started his run towards his young one. It wasn't the first time Zuberi had experienced rain, it really didn't have an affect on him, just another part of life. Something he enjoyed actually it was interesting to watch the raindrops fall in undetermined patterns. He was running almost full speed towards were he knew Twana would be waiting he wanted to get there as fast as possible, he felt bad he had kept her waiting.
As he approached her the thunder started... it startled him the first clap, but after that it was alright with him. He actually kinda enjoyed the storm. He got closer to where is young one was sitting. He was worried when he saw the look on her face, was it possible that she was scared. He ran faster to make it to her side. "Hello my young one." he said has he approached her, he got to her and gave her a lick on her cheek and nuzzled the top of her heard.

At his voice her trance is broken and she shivers, soaked to the flesh she looks at him and whimpers quietly. "What was that?" She says to him, quietly as if the thunder and lightning could hear her question. She didn't want to seem disrespectful to the god-like phenomenon. Her eyes never left the sky as she spoke. Obviously awaiting the next 'attack', when the 'attack' occurs she immediately gets closer to her beloved Zuberi. Searching for unnecessary protection.
Her eyes close and she jumps slightly at the next clap. Her body shivers, frightened. "Will it get us?" She asks, still whispering. The fear was now leaking into her usually bold and daring voice. She walked in pup paw prints now. Her body practically trying to be beneath Zuberi's.

Zuberi chuckled at the little ones question. He remembered his first storm and remembered having similar questions. "That was thunder and lightning." Zuberi answered her. Then realizing his answer didn't really answer her question more then just give her two words she wouldn't know he tried to further explain. "Sometimes when it rains it happens. I am not sure why.... but the light in the sky that is called lightning and after the light flash the noise we hear is called thunder. It can't hurt us, it can just be really loud."
Zuberi hoped this answer would help his little one. He chuckled to himself again when he realized that the little one was practically crawling underneath him. He maneuvered himself carefully so he had managed to get her to sit and he wrapped himself around her as best he could, which wasn't as well as he wanted to and he was sure he must look quite awkward.

His answer sort of floated into her brain, his voice calming her slightly. The noises were very loud and over-powering though. Crawling successfully beneath Zuberi she feels less threatened. "Are you sure, I mean.. we won't get hurt?" She asks, her tail is now tucked beneath her body and tightened to her stomach. Her ears are pinned back and eyes glued to the 'scary' sky.

" I have never known anyone to get hurt." Zuberi said soothingly to his young one. He wanted her not to be afraid but at the same time he was really enjoying being this close to her. His love for her was growing daily, however since he was so young he still had no clue what this feeling really was.
" Why don't we play a game with it. Zuberi suggested, it was how his brothers and sisters passed the time when storms happened. "When you see a flash in the sky, see how high you can count before the bang comes. It will be like a race." Zuberi hoped Twana could count, but it made no difference he would help her along the way if she couldn't. "Now get ready... Zuberi said, stretching his neck up so he could look into the sky.

Her mind was blown officially. Count? What would that do? Whats counting? She had so much to learn and this male seemed to know it all. She became almost immediately fascinated by his idea. She looked up past his head to the sky. "Whats counting?" She asks. Her voice pure innocence. And the question simple. She knew nothing of numbers.

Zuberi sat silently for a moment, he was unsure how to explain counting and numbers to Twana. "Well.... it's a way of keeping track of stuff... you say numbers and as you get higher you know you have more or that something is farther away." Zuberi wasn't sure how much sense his answer made but he hoped his young one would understand somewhat.
Anticipating her next question Zuberi continued "Numbers are just words really, they mean different things. When you count you start with the number one.... and go up to two, then three, after that is four, and then five." Zuberi decided that for tonight five was as far as they needed to go. It was a decent storm so he knew the thunder would come before they had to get past five. To give her an example of what a number meant, he picked up his paw and tapped each of his ears, "For example you have two ears."
He hoped his explaining was accomplishing something. He wanted to share his knowledge with Twana, but as much as he loved to learn he felt he hadn't really become that great of a teacher.

Twana's eyes gaze up at Zuberi. Her muzzle just below his. Her nose snuffles and she sneezes gently. "That sounds fun!" She says excitedly now trying to find anyway possible to forget the loud claps of thunder and bright flashes of lightning. She moves a little from him so she can clearly see his ears but, readies herself to dive bomb him again if the noises come back. "1..?" She ponders out loud after the noise had settled slightly and then yelps and dives beneath Zuberi as the thunder bangs itself to life.
She shudders. Her body beneath him, she basically football position tackled him. Her bottom raised slightly to the sky and snout buried. When the sky clears again a muffled count down can be heard.

Zuberi chuckled as Twana dove beneath him. He pawed at her back slightly "You know love you can't see the bright flashes from under there very well. " He wanted to show Twana she had nothing to be afraid of. After all there was nothing to a storm then some bright light and some loud noise.
"I promise you nothing is going to hurt you while I am here." Zuberi told her. Pawing again at his young one hoping she would come out. He would try to shield her ears when the booms came, hopefully that way they wouldn't scare her as much he decided.

Twana felt the pawing and heard a muffle of his pleas to come out and experience the storm. It was his promise of guardianship that made her come out. She sits next to him, their fur meeting and warmth passed between one another. Her eyes gluing once again to the sky.

Zuberi smiled when Twana came out, please that she trusted him. He was also glad to see her looking up at the sky willing to play his game. This young one brought out so many feeling in him it was rather strange.
He moved closer to Twana and delicately sandwiched her head between his chest and his head trying to cover her ears as best he could hoping that he could muffle the noise for her at least a little bit. He had to position himself somewhat awkwardly so that he could still see the sky but he managed it. When he saw the light flash across the sky he started counting, hoping to continue his game with her "Oh there it was.... One......"

She felt herself be enveloped within Zuberi's safety and felt a bit better. When she sees the light and hears him start counting she mumbles along, not having the greatest recollection of what the numbers were that he had told her. After about the fifth number a loud crash is heard everywhere, Twana shudders and crawls a bit more beneath him. She started understanding the game though. Only getting to that small number meant it was close. But how close? She decided to keep that question to herself. "After you get passed the scary part of it.. it's actually pretty." Her voice remains small as she speaks and kind of jumpy.

Zuberi was glad to hear the little on refer to the storm as pretty, if she could see the beauty in things it would help her to be less afraid. Zuberi knew the storm was still fairly close but it was going to start drifting away and he knew the numbers he had given Twana to count with wouldn't cover it. He decided not to confuse her further instead he would just count out loud and hope that she would follow his lead.
As if the thunder could hear his thought another bright light streaked the sky. Zuberi began counting "One .... Two..... Three..... Four..... Five" he had made it to five and still no boom had sounded. He continued knowing she couldn't count with him "Six... Seven...." When he got to seven he boom sounded it wasn't as loud as the others but still till his sensitive ears it made him hold them back slightly.
"Twana it is getting farther away now. I told you it wouldn't hurt you at all." He explained to his young one. He hoped that she wouldn't always be afraid of storms, this hope came from the fact he knew he wouldn't be able to be with her every time there was a storm and the thought of her needing protection and him not being there to do it, made him really sad and kind of angry.

Zuberi's words were lost as Twanas eyes saw another flash of light cover the sky. It's beauty was immense to the young female pup. Her guardian stood over as she watched, now counting again but, streaming easily past his original set of five and then a more quiet clap thunder struck. She smiles, giddy now. "You were right!" She says excitedly. Crawling from beneath him she falls to the ground and rolls about the mud created from the still slightly heavy downpour.
Now a bit relieved she just lays on her back, mouth open and catching the rain. It seemed funny to her that the lake was pouring from the sky in this way.She laughs to herself trying to picture a big wild dog up in the sky pouring the lake down on them. It was a silly thought and even the pup knew this.
