CHARACTER APPLICATION
Name: Tamarin
Age: 19
Sex: female (heterosexual)
Craft: N/A
Rank: none
Physical Description:
Tamarin is a petite figure, normally dressed in flowing cottons from living in a temperate climate. She wears her long sandy blond hair in a single braid that falls to the middle of her back. Her grey-blue eyes always seem to be smiling. Her perky nose and small mouth add to the always cheerful attitude that she always seems to have.
The downside to Tamarin is that she sometimes tries to show off her needlecraft talents by adorning her clothes with her handiwork. This results in her clothes being mismatched and sometimes gawdy with colors that clash. Due to her pale skin easily sun-burning, she wears a wide brimmed hat whenever she has to spend much time outside.
Personality:
She easily greets people that she doesn’t know. If someone shows a spark of interest in something that Tamarin is passionate about (like her dream to be a Masterweaver-yes, she is a bit obsessive about that), she will talk until the person finds a way to escape. She’s generally an optimistic person and a hard worker. Just because what she is currently assigned to, isn’t her ‘dream job’, she still does her best at what she is doing.
She is a bit flirtatious with the boys, but she doesn’t actively seek them out. Most of her free time is spent working on embroideries, designing and making her own clothes, etc. She believes the more time she spends ‘perfecting her craft’, the better prepared she’ll be when the Masterweaver sends for her to come be his apprentice. She’s even toyed with the idea that by now, she’ll be able to skip being an apprentice and start right off as a journeyman. Poor thing just doesn’t realize that she doesn’t have any artistic talent.
Riders and weyrfolk alike have found Tamarin to be as good a listener as she is a talker, and will sit and chat with her while she sews. They’ve learned to stay away from subjects regarding the Weaverhall though, because once started, Tamarin will talk until they can escape, about becoming a Masterweaver.
History:
Tamarin’s parents work in a small cothold near the Weaverhall raising ovine heardbeasts. Much of the wool from their small beasts go to the Weaverhall for clothes and tapestries. Some of the wool is kept for home spinning. Tamarin grew up with several siblings doing the usual daily chores needed around a small cot, as well as helping tend the small woolie herdbeasts.
When Tam was old enough, her father allowed to her tag along when he delivered sheared wool to the Weaverhall. Once she saw the work done at the Weaverhall, Tam determined that she would one day be a Masterweaver. Returning home that day, Tam told her mother of her new choice of trade to follow. Her mother, approving of Tam’s choice, taught her daughter everything she knew about sewing, embroidery, weaving, etc. These were things that she’d been trying to teach her daughter all along, but the child hadn’t shown an interest in them until then.
Before long, Tam’s mother realized that her daughter didn’t have the talent for needlecrafts. While she could accomplish the basics like sewing clothing seams, her eye for color and balance left a lot to be desired. Tam’s mother subtlety tried to interest her daughter in other endeavors, but the child had her heart set on the Weaverhall.
In the years that followed, Tam accompanied her father as often as she could when he went to the Weaverhall for deliveries of shorn fleece or tanned hides. She befriended everyone she met there, in hopes that someone would invite her to become an apprentice. Eventually she learned of an opportunity to work in the Weaverhall as part of the household staff. Her mother tried to dissuade her, but Tam begged her parents to let her go. Tam’s idea of being employed at the Weaverhall was the next step closer to her ultimate goal. From her father’s viewpoint, one less child to help with the herding would not be a big loss, but one less mouth to feed would mean more food on the table for everyone else. Her parents finally agreed to let her go to the Weaverhall.
Tamarin was sure once the masterweavers saw her handiwork, they would quickly take her on as an apprentice. She was more confused than disappointed when the masters gave her off-handed praise for her samples, but none offered to take her on as an apprentice. She told herself it was just a matter of time. So she continued working in the kitchens and cleaning up the craft rooms in the Weaverhall. Every chance she could, she would talk to anyone that would listen about how things would when (not if) she became a Journeyman weaver.
Shortly before her 18th turn, Istan Search riders came to visit. They weren’t actively searching, but they were always open to possible candidates. The Masterweaver strongly suggested that Tamarin would make a wonderful candidate. Tamarin didn’t think it was a good idea (she had no desire to impress dragon), but the Masterweaver convinced her that she needed outside experience before she could come back to be a weaver apprentice. Believing the Masterweaver knew best, she reluctantly went with the Search riders.
Since Tamarind’s arrival at Ista Weyr, there have been two hatchings. She managed to avoid the first one altogether. In the second, she stood as far away as possible from the eggs and no dragonet came looking for her. She still doesn't understand what a weaver would do with a dragon, but the Masterweaver told her she should try and she greatly respects the Masterweaver's advice.
Tamarin has easily adapted to Weyr life. The Lower Cavern staff were happy to welcome another hand to help with mending clothes. You’ll usually find Tamarin sitting in the cooking area with a pile clothes waiting their turn to be stitched back to usefulness. Often, someone will ask her to mend something on the spot, and she’s happy to oblige.
