How did she always manage to be the messenger or get kitchen duty? Not that she minded when she had to peel tubers or set the tables but she hated when it came time to clean the ashes out of the spits. Kallista always ended up with soot and ash where it didn't belong. And it took several scrubs to get clean... Sighing, she looked at the empty bullets and scooper with obvious disappointment on her face.

Perhaps, she could get one of the cooks to take pity on her and give her a sweetmeat or soft pasty when the task was done. Taking a long piece of leather she had wrapped around her left wrist, Kallista pulled her reddish-brown locks up so that they might escape some of the clinging properties of the soot.

Time to get to work.

Grabbing a scoop, Kallista bent over to start filling the buckets.

Denik sighed as he walked toward the kitchens, bucket in hand. The cooks had caught him empty handed and deemed him worthy of more chores.

Now he was stuck with the task of cleaning out the spits.

The boy ran his empty hand through his light brown hair. His little flit, Aphid, had quickly flown off when Denik was caught. And she gets to relax. I was just about to visit the lake too.

As the ash pits came into view, he noticed with surprise that there was already somebody there. Once he was there, Denik kneeled down and stuck his scoop into the ashes.

"Hey. Looks like I wasn't the only one that got dragged into clean-up duty tonight. What's your name?"

Kallista looked up to catch sight of a younger boy walking towards her with bucket in hand. Terrific! Company! This would make the work go so much faster now. She looked over the youngster who was probably closer to age to her brother Nejeran than herself; yet, it would be nice not to be stuck with her own thoughts.

Had she seen him at lessons? Or at the Touching? Honestly, Kallista needed a minute to remember where she had seen him at... It was a source of pride to her to remember every face she came across. It was his light brown hair that reminded her. Lessons. So he was a candidate.

"I got assigned. I always seem to get assigned to the spits. I suppose because I don't complain too much about it. I'm Kallista. And I have seen you before... I just don't remember your name."

Denik smiled and the tiniest bit of blush rose to his cheeks. "I'm Denik. It's nice to meet you Kallista."
He would have offered his hand to shake, but that wasn't the best idea, as they were already getting dirty.

"I usually get stuck doing things that make me run around the Weyr. Today I actually thought that I could get some time to relax, but the cooks found me before I could run off. They seem to be really good at that."

After another scoop into the bucket, he turned to her again. "I think I've seen you around the Weyr. Will you be standing at this Hatching?"

This time, Kallista scooped a lot of ashes into her bucket and caused a black cloud to rise up and thicken the air. Coughing, she waved her hand to try and clear the air. Huzzah for clearing the air, shards as she now had soot dust in her hair causing the copper color to look dull and dry.

"Shards! I am never going to get clean!" She cursed as she stopped scooping. There had to be an easier way, right?

"Oh yeah, I am going to be standing this time around. If I didn't, I am sure the rider who Searched me would complain."

Denik coughed once when the soot rose into the air, and waved it away from his face. Bits of soot were on his face and in his hair. He put down his scoop for a moment and looked toward Kallista.

"At least it's not your fault that you have to do this right? With the amount of ashes in this one spot, the cooks would be crazy to think it would be clean!"

He scooped a bit more into the bucket, but the pile of ashes didn't seem to get any smaller.

"I'm standing too. The pair that brought me here thought it would be best to not wait until I was a little older. They thought it would be hard finding me again."

Denik grinned at her comment about the rider. "Is that rider really determined to have you stand for the Hatching?"

Kallista laughed at this. She didn't think she could imagine C'ren being enthused about anything. His green, Ceylith, on the other hand... Scooting the ashes into a bucket that never seemed to fill, Kallista picked up on something.

"Not find you again? Where would you go off too?"

Wiping her forehead, scooping was not easy work, Kallista wondering what trade the boy was in.
