That sounds like a great topic. I hope that we won't be the only two that'll be learning here.

The first thing in my head is to get my family to sew their mouths shut, and then tape their arms and hands to their sides so they're silent. smile They make too much noise sometimes.
As for being a little more realistic, I'd say it would help to be more in tune with the Spirit so you'll be better able to concentrate and focus, and also understand what's being said by the speaker.

yeah, that is very helpfull (the part about being in tune) as well as taking notes, so that you can remember what is said later when you are maybe preparing for a talk or spiritual thought or are just going through a hard part in life and remember something you wrote down during a meeting that stood out to you. Also inviting the spirit to be with you.
so why would it be important to listen in meetings?

It's important just like it is to listen during Ward/Stake/General conference. The speakers have been called on for a reason, and they are up there to teach us through their talk. Though we know a lot already, there is always something more for us to learn, no matter how old we are, no matter how much we've experienced, no matter how much we think we know.
Like you said, maybe we're going through a hard time in our lives. The Lord works in mysterious ways, as it's said. Maybe He's given the speaker the impression to say something in their talk that would apply directly to you or someone who needs to hear something to help them in their lives or to give them comfort.

ok, now i'm going to paraphrase what John Bytheway said.
He said that we don't go to church to be entertained and it's not the responsibility of the speakers or the teachers to keep us entertained, and that to enjoy church we have to change our attitudes about it.
are there any questions so far?

all of these things are needed to fully gain something from a meeting. you need to choose to be there because you want to be there. you have to remember that it is the Holy Sabbath, not just the weekend. You need to have respect for the teacher, read what you need to read to help you understand the lesson, and record what you heard so you can remember it. You have to remember your covenants that you have made and follow them. and you MUST have the Holy Ghost so you can know for yourself that the things being said are true.
Do you have any questions?

I'm free of questions. But that is something I've been noticing. I need to start writing things down more often so I can remember them later. I'm trying to make it a habit to keep a pen and a piece of paper on me all the time, just for those moments.

yeah recently ,in my ward, i've noticed that we (the youth) need to be more unified, because there is so much tension between us all and it is so hard to learn anything when it seems so chaotic and tension that is just in the air. But i'm hoping that it can all be worked out, with help from the bishopric and leaders. But it will need little steps to get there, which is the same with anything. Just keep your own church journal and take it with you and maybe start with taking notes on sacrament talks (or sunday school lessons) then move to other area's once you decide that your notes are good enough (getting all you feel you need)... maybe start with young women lessons, they are the same lessons every year.

A few months back, my seminary teacher handed out copies of President Eyring's talk on being unified, because he felt that we needed to practice it a bit too. I think it got better.
And since General Conference is coming up, that would be a good way to practice taking notes too. Hmm... better now than later, I suppose.
