It was a nice day, with the sun shining warmly down on the Weyr and a gentle breeze to fend off high temperatures. It was warm, but not overly so. Being both a weyrbrat, and a candidate, Kella sometimes felt like she got saddled with more chores than anyone else. She'd tell anyone who would listen that she was overworked! But today was an exception. Her chores for the morning had been unusually light, and the young girl was in a rare, friendly mood.

Her foster mother had even let her skip out on her last chore of the morning! Kella abhorred gutting fish, and one simpering look to her compassionate foster mother was all it took. The young girl was sent scampering out into the Bowl with a basket-full of fresh lunch. Kella chose a prime spot, one she knew would be shaded within an hour or so, but was bright and sunny for the time being. After spreading a thin blanket on the ground (her foster mother had insisted that Kella not dirty her new shorts!) the young girl sat cross-legged and pulled the basket onto her lap. "Woooow," she said appreciatively as she peered inside. There were a couple sandwiches, some fresh fruit, and a sealed container of cooled fruit juice. Kella opened it and drank some quickly; she knew it wouldn't stay cold for long!

Moving the basket off of her lap, Kella drew out a sandwich and smiling, took a bite. She stretched her legs out on the blanket, leaning back on one arm while holding her sandwich with the other. Today was gonna be a good day!

Riyinn browsed around the area she wasn't sure what she was looking for, but having finished her chores she was free for a bit. Some how she had ended up at the entrance to the bowl. A light breeze circled the area and played with her hair. She liked the wind and closed her eyes to enjoy it.

Opening them she looked around the area, there was a girl not to far down. She thought of turning around but decided better of it. And merely watched her for a few moments, that's when she spotted Kir.... The brown firelizard had spotted the girl to zooming down he chittered to the girl then flew quickly over to Riyinn given her a mouthful along with images of a crisp, delicious sandwich.

Kella was just sitting by herself, minding her own business, eating a sandwich. The young girl, for once, was not bothering, pestering, or complaining to anyone. Her sandwich was absolutely delicious, the crisp lettuce and juicy tomatoes offsetting the richly spiced meat. She wasn't entirely surprised when a brown firelizard zipped by, chattering at her as though she should've offered him some sandwich. "Well, it's mine," Kella said childishly, knowing that there were more sandwiches in the basket beside her.

Then the 'lizard left her company. Kella watched him as he returned to his person, a girl who looked vaguely familiar. I've probably seen her around the Weyr sometime, Kella assumed with a shrug. Kella knew quite a few of the Weyr residents by sight, if not by name. She was usually doing the odd-jobs; running messages or deliveries, retrieving things from the storerooms, cleaning up the lower caverns after a meal~ things of that sort.

Only because Kella was in such an exceptionally good mood did she wave the girl over. With a mouthful of sandwich, though, she refrained from verbally greeting her. For now, a waggle of fingers would have to suffice.

Lehpas had already eaten with the candidates during their break in training, but he missed hanging out in the kitchens at home when he ate. The class had been dismissed for the afternoon so he decided to see what friendly faces he might encounter in the lower caverns.

Lehpas was doing his usual gawking at the dragons as he walked across the bowl. A darting flitter swooped past him. Trying to avoid the miniature dragon, he got tangled in his feet and met the dirt face first. When he looked up to see if anyone had noticed his clumsiness, he saw a young girl sitting on a blanket, eating a sandwich.

Riyinn gave a small grown when Kir got the girls attention she didn't know the girl by name she had seen her around. Slowly she walked over to hear a "Thud" Looking around she seen a boy face full of dirt and sand. She held back a snicker when she noticed it was Kirs fault. He cocked his head eyes whirling with curiosity and bolted towards the boy doing circles.

"Are you ok?" She yelled in his direction hoping that Kir wasn't the cause of an accident and looked over at the girl and shruged.

Lehpas picked himself up and dusted the sand off his clothes. He was startled when a brown firelizard started flying circles around him. He'd seen plenty of the flitters before, but none had ever taken an interest in him like this one was.

Hearing someone yelling in his direction, Lehpas turned to see who it was. Acknowledging their question if he was okay, he raised his hand and yelled back, "Fine, fine! Just a little sand." The brown flit flew back to the girl that had called to him. Probably not the smoothest way to meet people, he thought. Might as well take the opportunity to introduce himself. This was to be his home now, after all.

Running a hand through his brown hair to shake loose any sand, Lehpas walked over the girls. "Hello, I'm Lehpas. I'm a candidate for the hatching. I apologize if we've met before and I've forgotten. I'm sort of overwhelmed with..." he spread arms to encompass the enormity of the Weyr, "all this."

Kella had lived at the Weyr her entire life, so she didn't quite understand why people found it difficult to adjust to the lifestyle here. She licked her fingertips to rid them of some dressing that had oozed out from the sandwich, and watched with some amusement as Lephas fell flat on his face. She snickered to herself, but hid the noise by looking down into the picnic basket for some of the fresh fruit packed away.

After retrieving the sliced, chilled fruit from the basket, Kella looked up to find both the boy and the girl closer to her than they had been before. She cleared her throat uncomfortably and looked at the blanket spread on the ground. There was more than enough room for them all... but Kella was reluctant to share both her space and her lunch, packed by her mother with love. The young girl frowned, sighed, then gestured to the blanket. "C'mon, you can both sit if ya want. There's some sandwiches and stuff in the basket if you're hungry," she offered with a shrug, looking back and forth between Lephas and Riyinn.

"Kella," she introduced herself brusquely with a mouthful of fruit. She would have stuck out her hand for handshakes, but her fingers were all sticky with the juices from the fruit. So she offered up a little smile, then returned to stuffing her face.

"oh" a bit taken back she looked between the three a moment. "my names Riyinn and the brat over there is Kir" She pointed at the brown tho he needed no announcement that he was there.

She looked at Lehpas "i cant get used to it to, my home was small vs here." she looked around the bowl taking in the sights and smells, "more trees and water where i come from, theres alot of people here." silently she cursed that it was so hard for her to make friends specially if Kir was trying to annoy everyone.

Nodding she sat down and Kir quickly landed on her lap looking to Kella with bright eyes.

"Thank you for the offer, but I've already eaten," replied Lehpas. "I wouldn't mind joining you though." Having grown up with an all female family, Lehpas was not shy at all when talking to girls he didn't know. He settled himself on the blanket keeping an eye on the firelizard in Riyinn's lap.

"And I'm so glad to meet your firelizard." Lehpas leaned forward to look at the brown flitter. "May I pet him? I've never seen one this close before."

Kella eyed the brown firelizard warily, and reached over to shut the basket holding the food. She frowned as she bit into another slice of fruit, her eyes glued to the brown pest. She wasn't very fond of firelizard. She'd never seen one behaving in a manner less than irritating; Faranth forbid the young girl ever found herself with an egg. With his bright eyes focused on her, Kella found it hard to not stare back. "Is he always like that?" the girl asked Riyinn, frowning slightly and pointing at Kir.

She glanced up to Lephas, and shrugged. "Suit yourself," she said simply. That was fine that he'd already eaten, it just meant more food for her! Kella gestured to the picnic basket and looked to Riyinn; was she hungry? The young girl was loathe to share her food with Kir. There were always scraps of meat in a bowl around the kitchens for firelizards. There was no reason he needed to be taking her food.

Riyinn opened her mouth then shut it, "around new people i guess, the hold is so strange to him." She caressed his head while staring at the two.

"he shouldn't bite you at least i would hope he wouldn't." She smiled at Lehpas, "hes normally good mannered maybe all the dragons are bothering him?" Suddenly she was no longer that hungry first people she really met and Kir had to go and be a pest. She shook her head when Kella offered her a bites. She glared at the brown in her lap for a few moments before given a defeated sigh.

"i come from a small off land hold basically hes only seen family and never a dragon till it showed up to search me. But he just wouldn't stay at home given that he likes me i guess."

"I was so surprised when the Search rider picked me," said Lehpas. "my mother seemed eager for me to come here, so I guess she wants a dragonrider in the family." He'd thought it odd that his mother had seemed so eager for him to leave their home. He was sure she'd want to keep her only son close to her. He shrugged off his thoughts of home. He didn't want to seem unhappy while making new friends.

"I don't know if I'll ever be a dragonrider, but I think I could be happy with a little dragon like this one." Lehpas reached his finger towards the firelizard to see if it would notice him. Not taking his eyes off the flitter, he asked Kella, "Do you have a firelizard?"

Kella was still wary around the brown 'lizard, despite Riyinn's reassurances. She eyed him with pursed lips and and pinched expression, but after a few moments took her attention off of him. Her dark eyes met Lehpas' and she shook her head in answer to his question. "Nah, I don't. I really can't stand them," she said, shrugging again. She shot an apologetic look to Riyinn, but didn't really think the girl should be offended. Everyone should be allowed to have their own opinions, right? "Do you have any?" She asked Lephas in return, more to make conversation than out of genuine interest.

Kir quickly changed his eye direction to the boy as he came closer. But other then that he really didnt mind the normal caress's he got were loved and from his point of view Riyinn was holding him so he wasn't in real danger.

"Well even if i don't get picked its been well worth it" She looked over at Lephas's finger and gave a laugh at Kir's whirling thoughts.

She looked over at Kella, "Yes that's the nice thing about the world, your own opinions."

Kella cocked an eyebrow at Riyinn's words. Had the girl read her mind? The girl suddenly felt very uncomfortable in Riyinn's presence, and she frowned. "How'd you know I thought that?" She demanded to know, holding a piece of fruit halfway to her mouth. She glanced quickly to Lephas, did he know what she had thought to? "I didn't say that," Kella insisted, looking back to Riyinn accusingly. "How did you know that?" Her frown deepened and she set the piece of fruit down, her eyes fixated on Riyinn.
