User ImageIt was when she was just a little kit that she noticed everyone else had a father, and that the absence of her own was unnatural. Being an inquisitive little dolt, she often inquired from her mother where he had gone off to; the result, of course, being the older female's large tears and varied apologies. She never understood; and typically a child does not stop their interrogation until their curiosity has been relieved, as a scratch stops the fuss of an itch. Questions, after all, are made for answers. Finally, Fuu's mother informed her that she had no clue where the love of her life had run off to. Thankfully, it stopped her daughter from asking questions. Or at least, asking answers of her; Fuu never really did stop the actual questioning.

She had no fond memories of her childhood; no doting remnants of happiness or fairy dust. Just nightmares of broken wishes, frustrated prayers and her mother waking her with groans of agony.

And the girl in the pink kimono decided all of this whilst strutting with an alacrity that was bizarre when coupled with such thoughts - amidst the tall grasses - stopping the eager strides only when she was stalking after imaginary friends that loneliness had beckoned into existence. Occasionally, however, she gave them a breather when a butterfly fluttered by and instead took her chances hopping after it.

Which was the case in this exact instance.

Her honey-tinted eyes were focused, a severe change from her usual vacant expression, as she leaped on a rock, trying to capture the insect with stained-glass wings within her grasp as mortal children captured them in cages.

She wiggled her hindquarters - as a fish did when swimming - and lifted her paws with a frown.

Nothing. She had missed.

Bright light shone blindingly into Hakyoku's sleeping face causing him to jostle awake. He lay high in the tree branches overlooking a river. It was quite a nice view during the day but Hakyoku usually slept through this time of day he should have found a more sheltered place to sleep amongst the trees. The branches seemed far too thin for him to get a good days rest, He’d make sure to sleep all day tomorrow.

Hakyoku opened his cyan eyes fully taking in the light. Glancing across the treetops he saw the daytime view of his favorite nighttime spot. Hardly did he ever move during the day anymore, Hakyoku felt less welcome during the daylight hours getting strange and hateful glances when he walked among the light. He ignored them all knowing they could never understand but somehow it still bothered him. Hakyoku sat up and stretched.

Moments later Hakyoku effortlessly slipped down the tree silently landing carefully at its base. Something even the most skilled couldn't do. Only something unnatural could do something like that.

Hakyoku adjusted his feather boa started to move toward the river, he was thirsty regardless of the other presence he knew was there.

Her eyelids felt heavy with despair. She had lost her butterflies, in both a figurative and literal sense, and was now left with quite nothing. A flattening of her furry ears against hair whose locks were the color of bitter chocolate, and she was thrown into a small fit of disbelief when she noticed there was another Kitsu in these parts, like when a dehydrated man in the Sahara spots an oasis. This was an interesting looking fellow, Fuu decided thoughtfully; of dark coloring, but nothing too depressing. Frankly, the feathery attire made him extremely fascinating, and she was instantly infatuated. Fondly, she followed after him; her paws were stitched with eagerness and each step was left throbbing with intrigue. Her forward movement was slow, but grew faster with her heartbeat, and soon she found herself leaping behind his paw prints.

Whence she finally caught up to his position, she stumbled in front of the larger male with the intention to stop him, such a quick pace having left her breathless. "Hullo." Fuu greeted excitedly. He was much easier to catch than all of those marvelous insects had been. To be honest, her first catch of the day.

That last thing she wanted to do was let him flee from her easily.

"I'm amazing. But you can call me Fuu." She offered him her name as soon as her tongue was able, her tails wagging behind her feebly whilst her eyes twinkled like all of those dreams that had gotten away, her stomach fluttering like the butterflies who had done the very same thing.

She had gone far too long on her own, and direly needed this. Conversation was certain to be extremely important to the talkative.

Nearly reaching the river Hakyoku could hear perfectly well the sound of the other kitsu approaching long before she would have ever realized. He took a graceful step back as she came, flying in front of him. Hakyoku stared at her quizzically as she sat in front of him. Should he respond? What was with her anyway? Most normal kitsu would run from him not toward him.

Cyan eyes moved from the strange kitsu femme toward the river and then back to the femme. “Hello.” He responded calmly. “You aren’t very modest are you, Fuu.” He pointed out in a monotone voice much like his father’s but unlike his father’s offered more words. He extended his paw toward the strange kitsu.

“Are you going to lay there for the remainder of the day?” he asked “I’m Hakyoku.” He said finally relinquishing his name. He’d have to get a drink latter; he didn’t think this one was going to let him be…

A creamy voice, with words softly-spoken, and she was a bit surprised that she didn't have to strain herself more to hear them. She alternated from looking into his eyes - as most conversationalists do - to looking at the feathered piece he wore so beautifully, her bee-sweetened gaze packed tightly - like its maker's hive was - with adoration and simplicity. A sweet and childish amore; and she wanted to steal that boa so terribly for herself, but such a desire was stomped to guilt when that little harp-playing scoundrel on her shoulder reminded her of how incredibly rude an action like that would be. And besides her white-gown ally's words - which were very much true - those really weren't her colors, either.

She smiled pooh-pooh when he noted her lack of bashfulness, replying merely with: "Modest, no. Fantastic, yes." And then she pulled her lips back in a pearly and apologetic grin, because she didn't truly want to seem overbearing and full of herself.

The truth, of course, being that she really wasn't that way. She wasn't quite as self-confident inwardly as she let on outwardly.

Among this realization he stretched, to her, a greeting and assistance in body language.

Fuu quirked an elegant brow at the male's gesture, her attention now fully on the offered paw. Momentarily, she couldn't piece together what he was asking of her, but soon understood the plainness of it all. She surely would have clawed exasperatedly at her face with mortification were it not for the fact that her touch was too busy cupping Hakyoku's, "Pretty name." She admitted to him with a girlish fondness, "Just like your attire. Honestly, the boa is beautiful... and really very feathery-looking. Just lovely. Oh my gosh - feathery... lovely - I'm gonna call you lovebird, mister! Entirely fitting, I'd say. Wouldn't you agree? Yes, yes... lovebird it is." Her face twisted into a look of thought as though she were mentally jotting this down in a notebook, that - of course - did not exist.

A look Kindness turned to suspicion as she continued to eye his boa, his most prized possession. Constantly reminding him of his heritage and his responsibilities and was gifted from his father. Unexplainably Hakyoku felt a shiver then an urge to leave Fuu, before she got increasingly more excited. It wouldn’t be too hard to do either... But that wasn’t right, damn his conscience. Hakyoku sighed inwardly.

“So I see…quite clearly” came his calm almost amused response. Really she was strange and quite full of herself and a bit of a klutz he figured from her landing in front of him. He thought it best not cultivate the serious lack of modesty. That smile wouldn’t help her case in his mind, the first impression was already imprinted seeing no reason to dig any deeper for a reason as too her overconfidence.

Finally did she clasp his paw after she seemed to be deliberating as to what Hakyoku had asked of her. Was it really that unobvious? He doubted it. Hakyoku hoisted her up carefully making sure to use only the strength he needed to help Fuu to her feet.

“Thank you.” Was all he managed to say before she began talking… Hakyoku found himself suddenly lost. She talked faster than Takashi, or his mother for that matter. It went from his boa to something about Lovebird? What? She'd just gone off into her own little world all of a sudden... She'd finished finally.

“Excuse me?”

She poked her tongue out bemusedly, noticing now that - in the vagaries of their minds - she had wandered off into the dark forest somewhere, and Hakyoku was still very comfortably seated at the campfire. There was positively no way he could have known what she was talking about, then. Very well, she'd repeat herself and make it short, "You. Lovebird. Name. From. Moi. Eternity." She emphasized each word as though all of them held a lifesaving importance, but somehow couldn't stop herself from a befuddling elaboration, "Like mother doves!" Fuu was on her feet by now - owing it, of course, to the kindness of her new acquaintance - her tails still wagging behind her and her eyes still dancing with happiness, "Do you coo? Ah; never mind that. I'd doubt you'd show me even if you do..." Her cheeks puffed out in annoyance and she was silently berating herself for lacking all suaveness and being so loudly obnoxious.

"Never mind, never mind. Pay all of that no heed. I'm just really excited and..."

She had to discontinue being such a nuisance, or he'd certainly want to leave.

And so the female stopped her speaking, aside from - of course - one final inquiry; she always had been curious, after all: "What brings you out here, anyhow?"

She grinned at him widely and waited patiently.

What foolishness was this? "No." he responded his tone carrying a stern edge. Never would he let that strange name stick, Ever. Hakyoku flicked his long ears back, an analogy? And he couldn't quite grasp it either he just let it go.

Coo now? "I'm not a Dove, Of course I don't coo." this was confusing. He'd never met anyone like this for that matter, it might explain why she came toward him instead of run from him. "your strange...Fuu" he admitted finally stranger than he for that matter.

He couldn't even understand her strange facial gesture, but maybe that was because he had distanced himself from most people besides his overly large family.

"It's alright." he said calmly his youngest brother often got excited like that.

Finally she asked him a question he could answer and made sense. Hakyoku looked back the way he had come "I was only heading toward the river for a drink of water, other than that I live around here." That answer should be sufficient.

"What about you?"

She rolled her eyes skyward when he denied her the nickname. It was much too late - however - for she had already plastered it to his face, and he was now - quite unluckily - stuck with it. Locked and loaded with feathers, Fuu almost informed him, but restrained herself when he admonished that he did not coo, whereupon he told the female that she was strange, causing her lips to press against one-another indulgently; she would allow it because he had allowed her so much already. Favors had to have been made to be returned, she supposed.

Her face glowed faintly when he assured her that it was alright, after which her question was kindly answered.

Score.

"A drink?" Fuu's nose wrinkled with thoughtful guilt as her eyes staggered their way to the active water of the river, and suddenly her ears dropped again, "Oh! You're thirsty. I see, I see..." The younger female pawed at her chin, making it seem as though she was in a more extravagant train of thought than the real. "Well, you should get one then! Thirst was crafted for quench, after all! Go ahead, go ahead. I'll follow along with you, lovebird. You needn't worry about losing me in the small journey!" Though she was more than awfully certain that he would prefer to relinquish her to the unknown by now.

She trotted towards the stream a bit ahead of him, replying thoughtfully: "I don't know, really. I guess you could say I'm looking for a couple of blockheads, each possessing less than half of a brain. You haven't happened to see two samurai-looking - well, one samurai-looking... the other dresses a bit like a hobo - guys around, have you?"

Hakyoku watched her reaction and waited for more strange words to slip from her mouth. Yet none came, Hakyoku felt rather relieved. Watching her act strange again… over exaggerating everything it seemed. He couldn’t understand this kitsu at all Fuu made less sense than his cousins and that was saying something.

‘Well you should go get one’ she answered… Hakyoku twitched. If she hadn’t stopped him he would have gotten one long ago. Was she honestly that dense? Then that nickname she had suddenly attached to him reappeared as she continued speaking. “It’s Hakyoku…” he reminded coolly regaining his composure. Yet amused he was of her believing he would be unable to lose her during such a small trek perhaps he should prove her wrong...

She trotted ahead of him, he didn’t move. Not yet at least, he could hear her perfectly. At least her response wasn’t too off the wall this time, not near as much as he had expected.

“No unfortunately I haven’t” he answered thinking back to the people he had both met and avoided.

Before she would have been able to answer or turn around, Hakyoku moved suddenly with inhuman speed flying past Fuu and gracefully stopping on the other side of the stream leaving no trace he had been behind her only moments before…

Fuu blinked confusedly when such a blur passed her by, flinching with a distinct unwillingness at the small gust of wind. She glanced back at where the male had been just moments ago, her eyes sparkling with need because she wanted for him to protect her from whatever had created such an air and gone so quickly; and yet he stood nowhere in sight, causing her panic to rise and fall unwillingly with deep breaths of concern and fear. She spun in an entire circle, her teeth clenched in preparation to bite in case she needed to protect herself. Then low and behold along came the picture of Hakyoku at the other side of the stream, causing her anxiousness to subside remotely as she discontinued the spinning that she had started for - apparently - no particular reason at all.

And so it had been him?

"What in heaven's name?" She inquired, running towards the bank. "How did you? I mean..." Fuu arrived to it finally with the smallest frown of befuddlement, examining her acquaintance carefully from her place before she continued on, "Why would you?" Her nose wrinkled again, a rather common feature her girlish face possessed, "I mean... how did you?" She bit her tongue to stop spilling the incoherent glasses of her half-full sentences, rethinking her wording tenderly.

"Perhaps the jump on the lovebird nickname was far too early... Houdini would be rather appropriate, too."

She scratched the back of her head with small and dainty paws, still incredibly curious as to how he could have possibly maneuvered his way to the other side with such unimaginable haste.

Hakyoku watched hiding his amusement as she circled around quite confused trying to understand what happened a moment ago. Clearly she had no experience with the strange things he experienced every day. He watched as she came running towards the bank still apparently stunned. He adjusted his feathered boa as she tried to ask the correct question.

"I just did." Hakyoku said simply "It's because I'm not normal, Like yourself and you did challenge me." he said referring to her spoken words earlier about being unable to lose her in such a short distance.

The black kitsu sighed again with the nicknames…

Her cheeks puffed in annoyance (and she strongly resembled a pufferfish) at the simplicity of his original reply, but deflated when he decided to go into detail. She seated herself comfortably in the emerald grass - daubed with dew - and watched him with unfaltering interest when he assured her that he wasn't normal. Fuu frowned with uncertainty when he told her that in being abnormal they were very much alike. What's that supposed to mean, she just about queried, but stopped when he announced that part of the reason he had gone into hyperactive-rabbit-run, or whatever he may have called it, was due to her cockily cocked challenge-gun.

The female waggled her eyebrows and flicked her tail, "So then, Mister Houdini, you're telling me that you don't back down when you are challenged? Is that right?" She tucked her head to the side in bewilderment and continued on, phased little by the fact that he could likely swipe her head off with those fast-acting claws, "Well." Fuu huffed, lowering herself playfully, "I challenge the dearest and loveliest lovebird to an eating contest. How does that sound?" She grinned widely, her entire hindquarters wagging excitedly because eating was something that she could definitely prosper in.

But alas.

"Just kidding. I don't wanna make the pretty bird bloated." She sighed, straightening herself and watching him with eyes that shimmered in mirth. "We should go for a walk on the bank. I like walks." She changed the subject quickly, though not masterfully, scanning down the water with a deepening appreciation.

Hakyoku watched both mildly perplexed and uncertain as she puffed out her cheeks. Was that normal for a human even a girl? Hakyoku wasn't sure he'd never seen anyone do that kind of thing; even within his own massive family. Hakyoku continued to stand and watching as sat down and spoke. He gave a light sigh.

“That’s not quite true…” he tried to interject before she had gone too far much to his dismay she challenged him again. Though he was hoping he'd be quieter, his plan had backfired. He curled his three tails elegantly around his forepaws a small sigh of relief slipping past his lips as she retracted her challenge so suddenly. Fuu was incredibly energetic more so than any of his other siblings… She acted like a kit but she was clearly much older he was perplexed.

Ignoring the fact she quickly changed the subject Hakyoku Stared down the river giving a light nod. Why not he thought quietly. Nothing would happen if they just walked right? The Half demon stood gracefully waiting for her to take lead. It had been her idea after all.

She grinned largely when he had nodded to her in concurrence, displaying rows of white and glittering teeth in an attempt at charm before she took a quick moment to roll in the grass with mild excitement. She was lucky - she knew - to have company, and would savor it until he had to leave and she'd be lonely again. Fuu was aware that she wasn't necessarily displaying her appreciation for him as well as she had been for the river, but she was really very grateful for the patience that he had with her. She whispered the tiniest, most inaudible thank you behind her shoulder, because she didn't have the guts to flat-out tell him to his face.

The girl rose onto her feet abruptly and shook the grass off of her kimono, taking her first step forward with careful happiness. "So, Houdini, where're you from, anyway? Just a tree?" Both of her eyebrows shot up swiftly with interest, "And no, I'm not just making small-talk; I'm really awfully curious. I mean, not everybody comes like you... in appearance or mannerisms. You're certainly one-of-a-kind. And please, it's a compliment."

Her tails wagged impatiently as she waited for his reply, her nose crinkling as she trotted forward with smiles and velvet-padded paws.
