Hi! I really would like some trumpet playing tips so I can be a better player. And I also would love to hit high notes with ease. (And I also would like to kick the preppy girls out of first chair -cough-) My favorite technique is buzzing and it helps so much. Faster air is a problem for me though, I don't understand the meaning of faster air. To me its just playing louder o.o So, any tips? biggrin

Haha. I wanna kick some douche off first chair too. How long have you been playing? I'm 2nd chair and I can only go up to a high G and hold for a good time with the note clean and pure. sad I just pull everything tight and blow. Erm....lol

But it gets softer for me, not louder. I don't "committ" to the high notes and I lose my steam a millisecond after it hits. sad

To hit high notes, you have to tighten the corners of your mouth and blow faster air. The faster air will make you play louder, but with tight corners, you should go up pretty high. I'm taking private lessons (I've been since the beginning of last year) and the teacher gave me a sheet of slurs. It would start at a middle G (on the staff), go down to F Sharp, back up to G, to A, to C, to D, then to E. On the way down from E, it would go to D, C, A, G, E, C. I have to slur that. For the notes higher than E, just go up the ladder after E, go to F, then G, A, B Flat, then C. I used to have trouble with E last year, but i kept playing the slurs and I got better, now I';m working on perfecting the C two ledger lines above the staff. I hope I didn't confuse you. i could probably explain more if you don't understand. Also, don't press the trumpet up against your mouth really hard to try and get the notes out.

Hey dude. Im probably more like the preppy girls you wanna kick out of the chair haha but i have some awsome excersies that is do.
My teacher is always complementin me on my awsome tone. Try to arrange your lips differently inside the mouth peice and it should sound different. Play low to start of your day. We play something called Rimington. Have you played it? Its pretty much just starting at g and taking half steps down. you know G 2 F sharp then go back up G 2 F Natural And keep going down to the low G. It warms me up with out hurtin.
Then I slur from Low C to Middle G to High C To High E. Witch are all open. Then i try to tounge them. It may be hard to slur at the begaing if you are a begainer like it was for me but if you keep tryin you will get really good and have a awsome range. Right now im in marching band and am in highschool. Hope you like my tips. sorry its long haha. But it should help feel
Feel free to add me if you have anymore ?'s i love to get comments and make new friends!
Peace and love,

DO NOT CHANGE YOUR EMBOUCHURE! NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!
BAD!

Anywho :]

The corners should be tight to begin with, you should feel them against your teeth kind of, keep them there and keep them tight no matter what you're playing
The only thing that should change is the aperture, or the hole from which you're blowing air through
For higher notes, the hole gets smaller, increase the pressure of air and speed up your air
Do a lot of slurs and chromatics
And I think the best exercise I've ever had was one of slurs where like
hm... say...
You start on C and you lip it down to a B, then you press the valve for a B, then go back to open C
Then you start on a B, lip it down to a Bb, press the valve for Bb, then go back up to a B
thats the best I can explain it

And yeah... don't press it on your face, that just cuts off the circulation to your lips, making it even harder to play

Oh... and low chromatics
From low C to low F#
Do them, and get a good tone, even when playing soft

wowthatslong.

it always comes out completely airy. And I can usually play the F right below it but when I'm playing for too long I can't. All of my friends can play super super high and my best friend can play the G an octave above my struggle. Any tips?

to make your lungs stronger, u can put the trumpet bell part in a tub of water and start playing something. it is really hard to play anything but after a while, u can do it.
to get higher notes, tighten the corners of your mouth and blow faster.
hope this helps! smile

I dont belive it. High high high c? Like above staff? B/c if you just started playing there is no way. You prob get to the 3rd staff line c. But nope not high c. Unless you have played before. or your lips are a god given gift. haha

wendy-if your embouchure is bad then you should change it, no.. the hole hole your air comes out of should not get smaller when you go higher. because... if your hole is larger your air will be warmer which will make your tone better if you make your hole smaller then it will be harder to have a good tone............if you want to be sure that i'm right for your self and not just trust my word then you can try this. make a small hole with your mouth and blow on your hand, now make a large hole and do the same.......which ones warmer

The hole has nothing nothing to do with the warmth of the air. Its the placement of your tongue and how open your throat is. Make your hole small and blow on your hand, now open up your throat and lower your tongue. AMAZING! The air is now warm. I know what I'm talking about m'dear. Stop trying to shoot down everything I say.

well..o.o (not trying to shoot down what you're saying, just trying to help all musicians in general)...do EVERYTHING you just said, with the tongue and throat...and with the small hole...try that...and then make the hole bigger...it does get warmer..(faster moving air is colder, slower moving air is warmer..when you have a small hole, your air is moving faster, when you have a big hole, your air is moving slower)

I'm not trying to shoot down everything you say or trying to be rude. you are right about the tongue and throat but I am also right about the hole size. have you ever blown warm air on a cold window? that wouldn't work with a small hole and warm air makes your tone better

High notes are usually a product of good practicing. Trying to aim for range too early can mess with your embouchure. The best advice I can offer is to pick up an Arban's book and devote as much time as you can to the basics every day. The three major things to work on are your sound, articulation, and flexibility. Since different exercises work for different people, I can't really recommend any specific ones, but here are a few. Try them out! (:

Arbans
Alternate articulations and tempo on pp. 15-19.
P. 15 #20
16 #24
17 #28
19 #38
42 #18, 19
43 #20
45 #25
61 #12
79 #8
131 #10
155 #1
175 #77
The back section is very useful for practicing sight reading, and the characteristic studies are somewhat difficult to work up.

Schlossberg
P. 6 #21
7 #28
18 #59
28 #91
31 #93

Clark
P. 5 #1-25 (Odds one day, evens the next)
18 #77-85
35 #133-139 (Odds one day, evens the next)

The most important thing is to play something CONSTRUCTIVE every day. A good goal is one hour a day of basics. Don't push yourself, make sure you rest often. A lot of these exercises might extend past your range, but again, don't push it! If you hit your breaking point, don't get frustrated! Take a break, try it one or two more times, then let it go and try it again the next day. Focus a good amount of your time on your comfortable range. Have fun!

Well i'm probably one of the people you want to kick out of the first chair. I've hit an E above the staff....But anyway, you tighten the hole you're blowing through. but you gotta get used to it..when my band director told me i need to start hitting the really high noted he told me to do that..it works for me. but some people in my class do some other thing it think...
