ok, so, I basically jumped into the abri sax a week ago... I'm used to brass instruments and the bassoon, so I'm really having lots of troubles right now.
My BD's main isntrument is the Sax, and he gives me tips sometimes, but still...I'm just not doing well, I've already cracked my reed, and I'm too proud to let him know I didn't even last a week with it (actually, i know exactly when it broke...the first time I put it away, afetr the first time I played it >.>)
in jazz band, we have a very slow, quiet peice, and I'm just not doing well, also, in concert band we have a peice that's not so slow but somewhat quieter than the jazz peice...
our jazz band has a population of about ten people, and I've asked the BD is he'd have the band play louder, just untill I can play the abri sax quietly and he said no crying so now I'm stuck making really bad quiet notes and squeeking a lot because I can't play softly yet >->
any tips for quiet playing? anything that may help a beginner with a concert in two weeks?(yeah)

Switching from bassoon/brass to sax? Much less, the bari? Wow. Good luck. I can tell you that your embouchure (mouth shape) has EVERYTHING to do with your playing. If you're squeaking a lot, try loosening up your mouth, but not all the way. The only real way to get it is to practice, of course. As for playing quietly; it's hard on the bari. You have to do the best you can. You need a lot of air, but just don't force it through the horn. Other than that, ask your teacher, and if that doesn't help, have a meeting with him where you play and he tells you what is wrong and how to improve.

well first off o.O get a new reed...you don't have to tell your BD you broke your old one..just get a new one...and yeah...like mega said..embouchure o.o...maybe look up "sax embouchure" on google..or youtube..or something...and practice in front of a mirror so you can SEE your embouchure and make sure it looks right..xD i love when the bari is played well..i hope you catch on...P.S.you might want a soft reed to start off with..maybe a 2-2 1/2..rico's are inexpensive..(and i'm a big fan of them anyway)maybe get a few different brands of reeds also.. biggrin
