Short, wavey dark brown hair.
Large light almond colored eyes.
Olive colored skin.
5'2 and still growin'
Somewhat pudgy, chubby cheeks, he is still young and carrying what his mother says is “baby weight” something that needs to be worked off with hard labor.
His lips are chapped and often puffy because of his consistent rubbing of them.
Mathyn is plain Jane as they say, nothing really definitively sticks out when looking at him, he is not handsome or ugly.
Personality: Mathyn is competitive, he tries very hard to stand out at absolutely everything and anything. This comes from his mother's pushing at him to be the best in his field, wanting him to follow in her footsteps as a healer. But, also comes from sibling rivalry, it's hard to live up to the golden older brother's image. He wants his mother's approval above all things. (God, mama's boy. >D)
He feels the healing craft is not for him, but he could not let his brother beat him in the competition (pursuit of knowledge). Life is all about winning and proving his worth. He is strong willed, headstrong, and unfortunately has a hard time staying calm, cool, and collected leading to embarrassing outbursts and adolescent zeal.
Socially: Not all together a social butterfly, he does not go out of his way to make conversation. Mathyn likes to have light airy conversation-- not into political debates about Holders and Weyr. He is good for polite and charming, "how is the weather?" conversation, but not much more. In a group situation (with those his age or slightly older, adults make him uncomfortable because of their control over him) he does feel the need to take some sort of control, not necessarily a leader, but quite independent. He becomes uneasy and withdrawn if not given the chance to be apart of the group. Group projects at the Hall are the easiest for him to get excited about and to 'prove' his worth.
Mathyn is not necessarily unintelligent, he has to study very hard to compare to his brother's seeming endless knowledge, this grates on him and makes him quite frustrated.
Mathyn cannot tolerate losing. He creates games and goals for the day every morning, these games can go from getting his work done faster to racing and sports. When he does lose Mathyn becomes very withdrawn and pulls himself away from social situations, especially if the idea for the game was his own. (Hey I can run faster than you! I can sing louder, I can, I can, I can) If he wins at one of his games he will brag.
He rubs his hands across his lips when he is frustrated or thinking, because of this his lips are chapped and puffy. He internalizes a lot of frustration from losing or not fitting in and rubs his lips to externalize it.
All in all think puberty driven young male who is slowly coming into his own, he feels the need to be cocky and masculine and to prove his worth in society.
History: Mathyn and Milan were born in Fort Hold, their mother and father a healer and harper, respectively. They are not well to do, but they live comfortably. Both parents instruct their children and feel that education, particularly in healing is extremely important. Because of the family’s emphasis on knowledge, learning, and talent the boys develop something of a strong sibling rivalry with one another. Both boys were accepted as apprentices in the HealerCraft, although Milan takes more of a shine to knowledge and helpfulness.
A moment of note in their lives is when their father came into the possession of a firelizard egg, a gift from doing a performance. Not wanting to favor one boy over the other suggested that they both take care of it in shifts, the one it hatches on gets to keep the lizard—a game of sorts. With excitement they waited and dutifully cared for the egg, and eventually it hatched on Milan’s watch. Mathyn since this moment has wanted to upstage his brother in every effort.
Milan loves his brother dearly and plays the older brother role very well, he protects him from being picked on for his weight and for his silly competitions. Aleema does favor Milan, her first "baby," over Mathyn. She encourages their competition to strength Mathyn's shabby healing abilities.
