Introduction So, I've been lurking around Lab for a while and occasionally ping ideas off my friends here. Finally got poked into setting up a 'quest' thread. This is more like a repository of ideas as I have concepts for - they have reason and function but the design is still a work in progress.
Critiques, so long as they are constructive and reasoned, are more then welcome.

Essence Ideas Primary Idea - Organic Fossil This concept is based around the scientific knowledge of how fossils are formed. For the general idea of how a fossil is formed, please follow this link. The key step in that animation and explanation is where the silica replaces molecules of the remains. The fleshy bits of my fossil would have rotted away, yes, but the core of it - the bones - would have remained and it would this part that remained organic. The silica would not have turned the bone to rock though the fossil would have still undergone all the rest of the process. Thus, despite being a fossil, it is still organic - an impossibility that should not exist and yet it does. All because of the storm that affected the organism. Also, it fits the time line for Dinosaurs as a whole disappeared roughly 65million years ago - far enough in the past I think to accommodate the storm. Alternatively, if the fossil is too big (as I would like for a utahraptor claw), a sliver or the tip of the claw could be placed in the jar/vial to fit the size requirements.

Not a particularly unique idea, I'm sure, it would be the heart of a creature (tbd) that's been effected by the storm and continues to beat and remains 'alive' even when the rest of the body has long ago died. It is somehow preserved and living even though it should be dead. This would be coupled with the Soul idea of a plague rat to combine into the idea of a Raevan who's able to worsen and cause sickness to varying degrees (cough/minor cold -> malaria for example). I've been told it's too squicky for the shop, so an idea it will remain. Third Idea-Mandrake with a Pulse This one plays along with the idea of a heartbeat but takes a different spin. Inspired by the wonderful Mouse, this Essence would be a mandrake that looks incredibly human and yet, despite being a plant, has a strong and definite pulse. How it's managed to survive the ages since the storm is simple enough. In nature, sometimes natural mummies are made. This mandrake would have had the fortune of such preservation, enabling it to remain intact and with pulse until such a time as Kyou found it. Soul Ideas Main Soul Ideas Red SalamanderThe Salamander has both mundane and mythical connections. A curious creature, a salamander can regenerate limbs and have many mythological connections to fire. They live in moist habitats and are mostly aquatic, thought they can and do venture onto land. Some can even breathe through their skin via valerian respiration. Such an interesting animal would make for an interesting Raevan, I think. I am also not aware of any other amphibian souls among the quests or official Raevans. CoralCoral is one of the more appealing ideas I had as the soul of coral could really open the path to several community-based powers as well as the chance for a split or multiple personality Raevan. Coral are indeed creatures and not plants or inorganic. They live in communities and the reefs that coral make are homes built upon homes built upon homes. They are often the center of a reef ecosystem, providing shelter, anchorage, and a gathering point for wildlife. Blue-Spotted Sea RayThe blue spotted stingray was another creature I might look to for a soul, though this is purely a 'because it'd be cool' decision and not based in any myths or legends or curious fact. The Raevan Describe Yourself Primary Combination Fossil + Salamander Name: Socius Gender: Male Description: The actual appearance of the Raevan is not set. I am entirely open to a surprise design. (Though the bright colours of the salamander or horns/spikes made of coral would be cool) Alignment: Neutral Evil [Fossil+Salamander] or Neutral Good [Fosil+Coral] Personality: (Please note these are rough sketches of personality and not set. I don't feel as though I need a definite pesonality to start - my characters often evolve greatly)[Fossil+Salamander]Provided this combination, he would be a cunning, witty, and snarky individual whose greatest priority is his wellfare and happiness. Manipulative, Socius would not be above playing one person off of another and utilizing reverse psychology to get what he wants. That said, if honey truly would attract more flies then vinager, he can and will be the best friend - though do not be surprised if that friendship is betrayed shortly after whatever it is he wanted has been obtained. [Fossil+Coral] Given this combination, Socius would be someone to strives to be a pleasant and positive influence on those around him. He would be kind and opinionated while still respecting authority (though if he sees that such an action will cause more harm hen good, he will not listen). Enjoying a good joke, he'll endeavour to cheer others up. Food Source: [Fossil+Salamander]- Limestone (Or Calcium Carbonate => aka Acid Reducers [he can survive on Tums! 8D]); [Fossil+Coral]- Limestone Notes: Yes, I've listed two options for the same basic Raevan as I like both. I'm leaning more towards the Salamander+ Fossil combination but there are some things about the Fossil+Coral combination that I rather enjoy as well. Fossil + Coral Powers Preserve - this ability would freeze a thing in 'time' and preserve it. Used on living things, it would suspend aging for a small amount of time (few days to a few years as the Raevan grows in strength) and used on dead things, it would cease decay at the point where the ability was used.
Community Effort - Inspires those nearby to work together. It would be more of a passive ability that makes individuals more receptive to others. Acting like an aura, it would not be a willful projection of the ability but rather a pleasant halo of energy.
Duplicate - This ability would allow the Raevan to split himself into multiple copies. With each successive copy, they and he would grow smaller in size such that he would become a community of tiny raevans working together. This ability would be weak at first - a single copy (total two) - but would grow so that he could split into up to a hundred tiny copies of himself. The fewer the number of copies, the longer they last and the more, the shorter time frame - when this ability fades, they would all combine back into the singleton.
Fossil + Red Salamander Powers Preserve - this ability would freeze a thing in 'time' and preserve it. Used on living things, it would suspend aging for a small amount of time (few days to a few years as the Raevan grows in strength) and used on dead things, it would cease decay at the point where the ability was used.
Insulate - The raevan is immune to fire and heat, able to walk through and endure extreme temperatures relating to fire. As he grows it would be more and more able to withstand fire for longer periods of time. This is a passive ability.
Coalbed - The Raevan is able to heat up a patch of ground to varying temperatures. This is both an offensive and regenerative ability. As long as he rests on this coal bed, he regenerates - limbs regrow (albeit slowly) and wounds heal much faster. Obviously, anything on the coalbed besides him would be burned or catch on fire. The higher the temperature, the more quickly things burn and the more intense the heat.

Name - Mina Job - Cryptozoologist and Mythographer Gender - Female Race - Human with Fae roots (far enough back, not really magical, just sensitive to the supernatural and with a stronger spark of magic then the average human) Desc - The most striking thing about her is the eye patch and scars down one side of her face. Growing up in a place rich in such stories made her wonder if there was any truth in them, after all, people said they saw Nessie all the time or that fairies would dance in a ring of mushrooms. This curiosity never faded away as she made her way through school and then to university. Her family didn't agree with her choice of profession, thinking that studying myths and mythological people would put her into the poor house. It nearly did. An accident occurred in her final year of university that disfigured her face and many considered her crazy - she'd been experimenting with alchemical recipes, trying to learn if there wasn't some root of truth in the once widespread discipline. People of her profession often held little respect with their peers because very few people truly believed in the supernatural... unable to find funding or a steady job, she'd eventually ended up in a museum as a tour guide for the mythology section. Well versed in many culture's pantheons and fairty tales, her tours grew to be very popular with some people even asking after her for their tour. It was during one such tour she heard someone mention studies that had been done surrounding the mythological. It was sketchy and filled with holes at best but some internet digging proved useful. Armed with only a name, she made her way to Lab 305, hoping to see if she couldn't somehow progress in her studies. Other -
