Its no where near as bad as you think it will be. The place I went to freeze sprays it, so I only felt the tugging when the jewellery went in. And we tapered up to 5mm from 4 so I've barely bled.

Freeze spray? Ive never heard of that before. I thought they just punched away at you.

It was my first time being freeze sprayed, its not the most pleasant sensation, slightly painful when it gets really numb.
I was actually expecting to just be punched away at lol

Then again, I picture someone coming at my ear with what amounts to a holepunch. Which is likely incorrect... sweatdrop

Its so much nicer to heal though, even if it is a tad scary to think about, now that the swelling has gone down I can't tell its there unless I knock it.

Im just freaked out by the gaping hole, like what if one day I want to take it out and let it heal over? now theres no skin there anymore *gulp*

At smaller sizes there is the possibility for the skin to grow back, I'll never have the chunk of cartilage back though.
