I'm just going as a chalk outline. I'll wear all black and paint my face and hands with black (not blackface, which is darkish brown, but actual black). Then I'll put some white tape around my "outline," and stand against walls and pose like a dead body, but upright, instead of lying down, because I do not do floor-lying. It's a lean year, finance-wise, and I can't spend a lot on a costume this year.

Purim is a festive celebration relating to the Story of Esther.
It involves traditional pastries, costumes and an ungodly amount of alcohol, (at least, that's how I was taught it)
In short, it's Jewish Marti Gras.

I'm not a Jew yet, I'm too young to purchase alcohol, and I can't hide a big celebration from my parents, who neither know nor need to know about my becoming a Jew.

Woohoo! Gettin' crunk on Purim!
Don't worry Jakes, we'll not celebrate Purim together. I have no one to celebrate with which means no one to drink with...and who wants to drink alone?

kingpinsqeezels Don't worry Jakes, we'll not celebrate Purim together. I have no one to celebrate with which means no one to drink with...and who wants to drink alone? I could drink with my sister if I where persuasive enough to get alcohol out of her, but if she found out I was a wannabe Jew I'd never hear the end of the jokes. What day is this? I could get a costume together, at least.

You know, we talked all about it in class yesterday, but I still don't understand where the costume thing comes in. Or, for that matter, the drunk part.

THE REAL AND WIDELY BELIEVED TO BE HISTROICALLY ACCURATE PURIM STORY: For Captain Jakes, by Lumanny
Part 1: There once was a land called Persia. In persia there was a town called Shushan/ Susa. There was a king named Ahashverosh/Zirkces. He had a queen named Vashti. He made a whole big party to show her off, where he expected her to appear nude for everyone. It didn't fly with her; she refused and was banished.

PART 3: The king sent out scouts to find beautiful girls to be his new queen. They would compete ina kind of pageant by seeing which girl he preferred after spending a night with each, the winner becoming the queen and the rest being other wives locked in towers with nothing to do but wait for maybe the occasional time the king wanted sex from them every few years.

PART 4: Hadasa was chosen for her beauty and called herself 'Esther' (from the Persian 'Hester,' to hide, ) in the pageant so no one would know she were Jewish.
Times had been tough on the Jews. In exile, they faced much antisemitism. Even some of th king's men were antisemites, such as his vain advisor Haman, who is believed to be descened from the Jew's biblical enemies the Amalekites, specifically the line of Agagites through Agag. This line is also believed to have sprouted the Nazis later, but I digress....
