Today we will be discussing the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
So first I'll start off with: Why is the Atonement important for you?

Not so much for me, but for all of us. It's the means that Heavenly Father has provided for us to perfect ourselves so we can dwell with Him after our mortal work is complete.

Yeah, So why was it that only Jesus could perform the atonement for all of mankind?

This is definitely one of those moments where in YW I'd just sit and wait for the answer. I'll take a crack at it though. When the plan was first put forth, Lucifer offered to do it, but Jesus came forward and said that He would go and do as was asked of Him, but the honor and glory would still be Heavenly Father's. So I guess, Jesus was more humble about it and was chosen.

Not quite what I was looking for, but it was still a really good answer. I was aiming more for that he was the only begotten son of God and had lived a perfect, sinless life. and even though he was tempted many times he was able to overcome the temptations.
Only He had the power to lay down His life and take it up again. From His mortal mother, Mary, He inherited the ability to die. From His immortal Father, He inherited the power to overcome death. He declared, "As the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself" (John 5:26).
What is the Atonement?

The Atonement is basically mercy satisfying the demands of justice, an eternal sacrifice where one perfect being suffered the pains and sorrows of all so that death's hold on them would not be binding and every single one of them would be given the opportunity to receive redemption and return to their Father in Heaven, thus fulfilling the purpose of their mortal sojourn.
