She was lying a short distance from the den, bored and wondering what to spend her day doing. The snake, Itzcoatl, didn't seem to be around, which wasn't surprising considering Kidondo lurked close by. The serpent was terrified of the lion, especially since he'd gone against Kidondo's wishes. She smirked. Silly snake. Daddy was hardly scary! Mummy was much scarier than he ever could be.
Some of the cubs were playing, others were snoozing, but Fia wasn't really in the mood for rough-housing and she certainly wasn't tired. No, what she really wanted to do was get away from the den and go exploring, but doing that alone was no fun either. No, she'd have to get Ea to go, too. Ea would agree. Ea was fun; not like some of the other cubs who'd prefer to do as they were told and stay close by.
Really, after all, what danger was there to be found? They were Firekin, strong and tough! Coming in and threatening Firekin cubs was like dancing a merry jig in the face of death.
She lifted her head and, glanced around her her twin, desperate to catch her eye. Ea knew Fia. She'd know that she was planning some grand adventure.

Almost as if summoned, Ea herself was just returning to the den's proximity. She hadn't gone too far- just far enough to heckle some other cubs down by Aunt Kaanga's den. It was clear by the look on her face, however, that something quite diabolical was on her mind. Seeing Fia in the distance only seemed to soldify it- and with a toothy grin, Ea bounded over to her sister.
"Fia!" She said loudly, before doing a quick skim of the area. She couldn't have mom or dad finding out about this! In fact, it would be better if none of them found out. Only Fia could be trusted with this! "Oh man, have I got a secret." She suddenly whispered.
"I went to see Aunt Kaanga, and was talkin' to that ugly face boy, Vlam? You know? With the red hair and the face?" She pulled her own face down as if to mimic a monster of some sort. "So, he starts trying to act all tough, you know? And I says, 'You're just full of talk.' And he says, 'No I'm not!' And THEN, he goes 'No I'm not. *I* know about the witch.'"
Ea gave another look around. "So I'm saying, "What witch?" And apparently- an evil witch of Finar-si died on our borders. Like, they say it's cursed and everything." Actually, Ea just assumed it was. What good were witches without curses?
She looked around suspiciously. "I wouldn't believe it, you know. Except- remember that night mom and dad ran off? They must have been fighting her. That's the only explanation." It wasn't, but... details!
And then, even lower. "I think we should check it out. Everyone else is too scared to go. I mean, even Mom and Dad seem to be avoiding that part of the borders. We should break the curse. We'd be heroes and stuff."

Oh, there she was! Had she already been off on some adventure? Causing some unknown mischief? Probably! She lifted herself onto all fours as her twin came bounding over, blinking her mis-matched eyes, which were the only real significant difference between the girls.
"Ea?" She noted the secretive movements and stepped closer, feeling the rise of excitement in her chest. What was this? A new secret plot? A plan? Something fun that meant running off from the den? Heck, even if the plan turned out to be jumping in a mud puddle - which was, of course impossible in the desert - Fia would have been up for it in seconds. Her eyes widened as Ea confirmed she had a secret and she leaned her head closer.
"Vlam? Vlam? No, I dunno him. Well...maybe. Who knows? If he's ugly then it don't matter." She giggled at Ea's face and her own dismissive words. "Oh?" Her ears perked up then, clearly captured by the telling of this story. Then...
"Witch?" She repeated the word in a hushed whisper, not quite understanding what it was but knowing that it was very important and not something that should be shared with anyone. Especially siblings and parents. "Cursed? Died here? Really?" Fia could feel herself being dragged into the adventure even as they spoke. Everything pointed towards one thing. Mystery!
"I remember. Do you think they were the ones who killed her, then?" She peeped quietly. "That's no fair! I would have wanted to see that battle, especially if it was against a witch with curses and all that stuff!" She nodded eagerly. No one was going to stop her now! She was going and that was that.
"Brilliant, Ea! Ugly boys do have a purpose, then!" She was dancing on the tips of her toes in glee. "Can you imagine the look on everyone's faces? They'll feel so silly, being scared of the curse that we managed to break with no problem? I say we go. Go right now before anyone else has a chance to do it. We don't want anyone else finding out before we've had our chance. Besides, that Vlam boy might tell someone else. Might tell Mother and Father then they'll stop us." She gave her sister's ear a tweak. "We can do this, Ea, I know we can!"

Still keeping her voice hushed, Ea nodded eagerly. "They must have! They wouldn't let the Witch come to our lands. So they must have killed her. Only, they don't know how to kill witches, I guess. You have to cut off their heads. I heard it somewhere!" Well. Maybe in her head. "That's why it's cursed. I don't know...but, I think we can do it!"
The fact that her sister was on her side wasn't a surprise, but it always brought a rush to the young cub's head. This was going to be awesome. No. Epic. She could see it now. "Do you know what we'd get for saving the pride? I betcha mom would let us stay up all night. For like, forever." Or better yet- maybe they'd get their own den. "Oh man. It'll be great. Your right though! We can't trust ugly-faces. We'd better see to this now before anyone else beats us."
"Is Dad or Mom around? If they see us sneaking off they'll just give us chores to do." Ea looked around and stuck her tongue out. "....We'd better go now!" She decided, and with a bound, she started down the incline from the den. "Quick quick! We'll stick to the shadow side of the cliffs and be out before anyone knows the better!"

"We definately can!" Fia agreed with no doubt in her heart at all. "If our parents can do it, then we definately can. We're just finishing what they started, right?" She was kneading the sand beneath her forepaws, trying desperaetly to stop herself from just charging off. Her body was alive with buzzing energy just desperate to be used up.
"Definately! Getting to stay up all night would be brilliant! Doing this would prove we aren't little babies that can't take care of ourselves. I mean, we are the oldest of everyone. The rest of them are the babies, not us. This'll prove it."
Then she remembered that their might be eyes watching - namely their parents - and she shifted to cast her eyes around. She was sure they'd be close by, but had they noticed yet? If they had glanced their way. they would have seen the two talking and known something was up straight away. Her little heart thumped wildly, and it jumped as Ea took off, calling for her to be quick. "Wait up!" She called, the words a muffled hiss as she took off, not daring to look behind her. The excitement of the adventure that lay ahead had put heat into her muscles and spurred her onwards after her sister.
Then, as she dissapeared into the shadow of the cliff she slowed, panting a little and throwing a glance over her shoulder. "I think we're safe, for now anyway." She was thankful they had both aquired their mother's dark pelt. It wasn't much good at helping conceal them in the glare of the sun, but in shadow they could move with relative ease.
"Do you know where abouts Mum and Dad fought the Witch, Ea?"

"Uuum..." Ea started while the two ran down the slope. Already the shadows were consuming them, and they made the wild girl's eyes glimmer with excitement. "Ugly face said it was towards...the safi border!" She said. Safi border, which was obviously The Very Bad Place, as mother had put it. Not only had they been banned from ever going even near the buffer zone, but, adults didn't even seem to want to *talk* about it.
Surely something with that much power had to be the location of the witch's curse. "We'll have to be extra-super careful though. Mom and Dad say it's dangerous. I think if any Safi come, we'll have to fight 'em." Her claws pricked outward with the thought. "Like, I bet I could take one. Don't you? I mean, we're really good fighters and stuff. Remember that time we knocked Dad over?"
The rock faces were starting to sink into the desert now. There would be less places to hide the further they got out. As rock began to give way to slipping sand, Ea began to eagerly bounce around, kicking up a few clouds as she went.

"Well that's no surprise." Fia chirped, running alongside her sister - her mirror image in almost every way. "Creepy old dead witch in the forbidden place." She nodded eagerly and turned her nose in the right direction, feeling her heart quicken with anticipation. "No worries! No one can beat us, Ea, not when we're together. You see how much we confuse Mum and Dad. If we can confuse and outwit them, it'll work on anyone! No one can beat the great Firekin Twins, right?" She smiled and those white teeth glimmered in that dark face. "Especially Dad. He's a big doofus. All those claws and teeth and he hardly ever uses them."
Full of innocent, boundless confidence they were. Alike in everyway to the untrained eye.
She sneezed as one of those dust clouds hit her in the face and with a giggle, leapt to try and topple Ea from her feet and roll her across the sound. "Watch out, dusty paws!"
Clearly stealth was not her strong point.
