Strongear was spending another day lounging about the pack lands. He was watching the others go about their daily activities. All the adults seemed to have something to do, a task that was there specialty. It was an odd thing for Strongear to understand. To him there was nothing that he wanted to call his "job". He was quite content just to laze about or play with his brothers and sisters. He supposed that he had time to learn this whole responsibility thing.... he was just a pup!

This particular afternoon Strongear had no clue what he wanted to do. He stretched and stood deciding he should at least get some exercise. As strongear walked around the lands he made mental notes of what others were doing. Of course no one paid that much attention to him. He liked it this way it was much easier to watch others and make a judgment about them when they paid no particular attention to him.

User Image Risktaker bowed and excused himself from a rather rowdy conversation with a couple other pack mates, laughing as they shot a last few parting jokes his way as he walked off. He shook his head, not taking them too seriously. They were just playing with him, trying to ruffle his fur about his growing family. But he was too excited to be rumpled.

Besides, what did they know? None of them had pups of their own.

He spotted a pup wandering and tilted his head. Where was it going, on its own? He didn't think it odd. There were lots of pups out. The darkness was their home, these lands their shelter. There wasn't much to fear. Still, he felt compelled to go see if there was anything amiss. Padding over, he smiled warmly as he approached the puppy, the starry sky above casting a nice, soft light over the ground.

"Hello there!" He greeted, "you look kind of bored, huh, little guy?"

Strongear was shocked by the adult actually speaking to him "Hi" he stuttered out... it was the only response he could manage. Strongear wasn't use to drawing the attention from the adults in the pack, they were usually off doing there own thing.... in fact Strongear was generally proud about it ability to fly under the radar. " I guess you could say I was bored... I don't know what I want to use my time to do.... Strongear said realizing he hadn't answered the dogs question.

Strongear suddenly felt some what honored to have the attention of this older dog. It wasn't all that often that he got to talk to adults (well other then his mom) and he valued the adults in his pack as they could teach him about all sorts of stuff. Learning was something Strongear really liked to do, possibly the only thing he was somewhat passionate about, as it stood he was rather lazy in regards to training for a job in the pack. Perhaps this dog could teach him something.

Risk grinned. It was adorable, the way pups reacted to adults. Some were determined to look tough and cool. Others acted like they were speaking to super stars. Others didn't like authority and wanted the man to know it. But he knew that they were all just normal little youngsters, who wanted attention and to be played with.

Or at least that's what he remembered his childhood to be like.

"Don't know what to do with your time, huh? Well that's no good. There's plenty to do around here. Unless your momma doesn't wandering you too far, which I could understand. I'd have the same rule. But let's see if we can't find you something to do..."

He looked around thoughtfully, spotting a cricket not to far off, sitting on a rock.

"Hey, look at that bug," he motioned with his paw, "do you think you could show me how to catch it?"

Strongear got excited about the challenge the older dog gave him. TO catch a cricket, it shouldn't be too hard he had caught plenty of bugs in the past with his siblings. He wasn't sure why but he did feel a need to impress this older dog, he didn't want him to think he was just another stupid pup. "Sure I could do that for you." Strongear announced.

He got down into a pounce position, and inched closer to where the cricket was. He couldn't help but bring the typical bum shake right before he pounce that you often see young animals do. Leaping through the air Strongear landed with his paws out reached, trapping the cricket easily. He laughed out loud when he saw that he had accomplished his task.

He turned around with the cricket still in his paw to face to adult dog. " I did it he announced!!" Producing the cricket for the dog to see, he hoped that he would be proud of his display.

Risk grinned as the puppy got a determined look on his young face. The older wild dog could see that this pup meant business. Watching carefully, just in case he needed to pop in and give the little guy an assist, Risktaker let the young dog do his best. He remained still, as if he was worried about scaring the cricket away despite being a good distance away.

He just didn't want to mess it up for the little guy.

Risk let out a bark of approval as the pup leaped, rushing over to see the catch. He was an excitable dog, taking delight in the simple things in life. He lived up to his name, most days, never one to be bored or lazy. He liked to take risks, big or small, and keep himself entertained and living the life he so dearly treasured.

"Look at that! You DID do it! And you didn't kill it! That's very good. I would have had to give you a lesson about the Way and how it's not right to kill without reason. But I guess that's something you already know, huh? Something to be proud of."

Strongear felt a great deal of pride when the older dog told him he should be proud. "Well truth be told" Strongear started "I didn't kill the cricket because I think it is more impressive if you can trap something without harming it." Strongear was honestly kind of interested in what the dog could teach him about the 'Way' as the older dog put it.

Suddenly Strongear realized he didn't know this dogs name nor had he told him his name. "By the way my name is Strongear" Strongear announced proudly. He knew he had seen this dog around the pack, and although Strongear was kind of lazy about training for a future in the pack he was interested about what other dogs did.

"It certainly is more impressive," Risk concurred, wagging his tail. This pup certainly had potential, if he was already thinking about the importance of life and conserving that which didn't need to be used. There was no waste in the Peke Na, and to learn that early was to be truly close to the Way that guided them. He grinned.

"Strongear," Risk repeated, "I like the sound of that. Nice and sturdy. I'm Risktaker, or just Risk if you're lazy like I am. It's easier to remember and to say."

He tilted his head, sensing that the puppy wasn't just staring at him for its health. It seemed to want to know something from him. Taking a risk, as he was wont to do, he guessed at the topic the puppy wanted to move into, "so, you look like you're just old enough to start thinking about where you're going. What kind of a place in this pack are you interested in? To learn. I'm a hunter, myself."

Strongear was mesmerized by the older dog, he had a way of soothing the younger dog. He liked being around the older dog, and it ocured to him that this dog had a lot to teach him and he should take full advantage of it. "You are a hunter? You most know my mom Littleshield she is a hunter too." Strongear had a lot of pride when it came to his mom and her place in the pack. She had loved so long by herself and now all she wanted to do was care for her pups and the pack.

"I want to be a scout. " Strong ear answered hesitantly. It was a only a resent decision Strongear had made to actually be a part of the pack in a constructive way. He wasn't sure about how to go about being a good member. Till he had made this decision Strongear had spent most his time lazing about watching others, it was his favorite pass time.

"I do know her! She's a good soul. I knew you were her kid, actually, but you couldn't have known that. I try to know everyone in the pack. It's pretty touch. But, I think that's part of my job, though, being the lifemate of the Chief around these parts."

He grinned, not bragging but certainly feeling pride. It was the pride of his feelings toward his lifemate. His love. The bringer of his new family.

"A scout? That would be fun! It's a good place, though you'll have to work on your speed and your patience. I think you've got it in you though, seeing the way you caught that bug."

Strongear smiled at the warm mention of his mom, it was true she was an amazing soul and even at his young age Strongear knew this. When Risk mentioned being the Chief's life partner Strongear suddenly remembered that was where he had seen him. Strongear smiled he quite liked that the leaders of the pack where so welcoming.

" I guess I still have a lot to learn before I can take my place in the pack as an adult." Strongear was still worried about how he would fit into the pack when he grew up, and whether or not he would make a good Scout. He wasn't the only one who had thought he should be a scout, his sister believed the same thing, it was amazing how well she knew him. Even though he was nervous about fitting in Strongear thought that his skills he had were good to be a scout, he found it to be a great pass time to observe others, and he liked to run, even though he was just doing it to play, and he liked to learn more about the world around him.

"Oh yeah, you've got a lot to learn," Risk said, nodding sagaciously, "but I don't think anyone stops learning. What you've got to remember is to stop and feel what the world around you is telling you. Sticking to a schedule is a bit rough, I find. What's life without some risk?"

He grinned, his namesake seeping into his words.

"I think if you make some time for play, you'll find that you'll be learning twice as much as if you just study your future job. I think skills are born of something you love to do, rather than what you make yourself do. So your play would be your work. That's why I'm a hunter, anyway. Love that thrill, and I love providing for others."

Stronger sat silently thinking about what the older dog was telling him, he thought it was neat that he could learn just from playing, and that he could keep learning for the rest of his life was interesting to him. He also liked the idea that if he liked what he was doing..... then it would be more enjoyable, this was something for him to think about, he wanted to make sure her enjoyed what he would be doing to provide for the pack and his future family.

"Risk what is the most important thing you have ever learned?" Strongear wanted to learn more from Risk, he seemed to have a lot to offer, and after all he was the lifemate of the Chief, chances are he had some of the most important lessons to offer.
PostPosted: Sun Mar 29, 2009 10:29 pm

Risktaker blinked.

That was a stumper. He had learned so many things in his life, and to pinpoint the most important one, without any kind of context, seemed impossibly daunting. He frowned at his paws for a moment, then grinned at the young pup.

"I guess learning to breath when I was a little baby was a good step in the right direction, huh?" He laughed, looking a little nervous. He sighed, not wanting to hide behind a joke.

"I'm not sure what the most important thing I've ever learned is. I just know that life is about moving forward, doing new things, and living to the fullest. You have to be the best person you can be, and accept others for who they are. That's a very difficult thing, but you'll find you'll be happier if you don't let yourself get bogged down by being judgmental."

Strongear was taken by surprise by Risk's first inability to answer his question. He thought about it, he supposes it was a hard question. Laughing at the first answer that Risk first gave Strongear felt a connection to Risk, adults were always super serious and were friendly.

The fact that Risk had brought up not judging others as being a key point in happiness, hit Strongear, judging others was a favorite pass time of his. Perhaps he was taking the wrong the wrong stance in life. Strongear shuffled his paws in the dirt, "That is a good way of thinking.... I think." Strongear responded feeling like he needed to say something, he wasn't sure that it was the right response, but it was a response.

Strongear decided to shift the topic of conversation, "Risk how did you decided to become a hunter?" Strongear knew Risk had mentioned liking the job, and liked taking risks, but he wanted to know what made Risk look at that particular job over any others that made have also involved risks. It was somewhat confusing for Strongear this whole picking a position, he was pretty sure he wanted to be a scout but how would he know that was the right job.
