Balin frowned as he watched Lumi through the bushes before he sighed and stepped out into the open. "Lumi? May I speak with you for a moment?" He asked polietly as he came to stand a few feet away from the female. "About Heret?" The herla didn't know just how much Heret had told her about their past, but he felt that he should explain anything she needed to know and hopefully he could get on her better side since she didn't appear to really like him.

The herla rolled his eyes. It was just his luck that the one female he couldn't get to like him was the one his brother fell in love with. "The thought didn't enter my mind." He stated, his tone just as unfriendly as hers was. "No... I was actually wondering if you wanted to know some more about where we grew up. I know Heret told you some, but I just thought I'd offer...." Balin trailed off, frowning as he waited for Lumi to reply.

Balin stared at her for a long moment before he again rolled his eyes. "Does? Heret's never really been one to have 'crushes'. They're been a few that he said were attractive but he never really cared about that... Honestly, I wasn't really sure about him until a few years ago when he got really pissed at a servant that helped out in our home for calling him gay over and over again. I think he was afraid that all the girls would think he was gay so none would give him a chance." Balin grinned and shook his head, "So, I suppose you're really the first that Heret's ever taken interest in, as far as I know."

He frowned, thinking for a long moment before he sighed. "Well, I don't know exactly what he's told you about our past but... You know Heret's relationship with our father was.... Well, less than family-like. I don't know how it is now since I haven't gotten a chance to see him for awhile, but I know when we were younger he had pretty horrid nightmares. He'd wake up with a cry and then shake for nearly an hour afterwards. It's wouldn't be a nice surprise." Balin frowned before he again shook his head. "Heret doesn't like to talk about his troubles, but I know that they eat at him. Especially now that he lost his sight."

"Father used to treat him really shitty just because Heret is blonde and father has always been very proud of the family lines. He'd beat him for stupid little things or lock him in his room for days on end without food just because he could." Balin stated, his voice hardening. "It didn't matter if mother or I tried to step in, it just got worse for Heret. Father never really took anything Heret said seriously and treated him like crap all the time." He kicked a rock with his hind leg as he thought back on it all. "Heret acts like it didn't happen and such, but... I know it eats at him."

Now Balin's expression softened as he thought back to his mother, "She was wonderful. Sweet, caring, and determined to raise Heret and I right. The complete opposite of my father." He sighed softly, "I honestly don't understand how they got together, but I love my mother. She's sadder now that Heret is gone and I as well, but... But I think she's coping. My mother is a strong person. I hope you get the chance of meeting her someday, I'm sure she'd love you."

Balin's eyes hardened into a glare. "I've tried, but no, I haven't managed to kill him yet." He stated, his words almost a growl. He had the scars to show from his battle with his father including the one that lay dangerously close to his eyes from when his father had tried to blind him as well. "I will kill him eventually though. It's my duty and pleasure to." The male flicked his tail in irritance as he frowned at Lumi. "You know... I still can't understand how you love Heret and yet you seem to hate me. I didn't realize how different Heret and I were I suppose. I seem to be only capable of pissing you off, no matter what I do." The buck snorted and shook his head, almost ready to leave.
