|~| He's an adult technically, but I haven't gotten to rp him as a pup yet, so I hope you don't mind if I do here. ^^; |~|

Sure, it was a full moon tonight. Sure, it cast the forest and the river he was currently parallel to with a silvery glow that any wolf with a set of functioning eyes could appreciate if they took the time. And sure, along the the stars that bright white orb in the sky cast such a light that it could dispell even the most remote places of shadow into brilliance. Yet it did not make the pup stop running: you could not escape fear, whether it was broad daylight or as peaceful a night such as this.

"Mom? Dad? Driscoll?" Barely a whisper now, fearful, strained.

He had not laid eyes on his family in what felt like ages and, at a tender age, it made Adriel all the more paranoid that something was out to get him: what if he was being pursued by someone, the same someone that took his parents and brother away from him? His self-fulfilled suspicions were aided by whispers of pups being stolen away from their mothers: male pups to be exact. Oh, how chilled he felt that night as he ran! Though eventually he had to stop, panting as he paused beside the slow trickling river to catch his breath and get a drink. It was crisp, and he shuddered, longing for his mother's warm pelt once more.

Never go wandering at night, Never. Never ever ever. Listen to your mother, Never.

"Never never Never never Never," the pup chanted in a mocking voice as she followed the shimmering water. It was a beautiful night but Nevermore wasn't really paying attention to the scene around her. No, she was much too busy fuming to herself about things that any other pup might have brushed off without a thought. Nighttime, when everyone else was sleeping or doing some kind of unspeakable dirty business, was Nevermore's time to cool off. She had to keep everything inside around her family... it wasn't until the sun set that she could act how she really felt.

Scents told her that she was nearing the edge of the packlands. She had never wandered this far before, and it filled her with a sense of rebellion. She could just step over and be gone... no, that wouldn't do at all. No doubt some animal would come along and eat her as soon as she did, or her family would come and hunt her down. Still, it wouldn't hurt to go a few feet out, right? Never kept going.

She peered into the distance. A shape about her size was quickly coming towards her and she tensed, ready to dart away. But a moment later she realized that it was a pup, and he looked more than just a little scared. Perhaps she should warn him of the upcoming pack border? It would do nothing for his nerves to run into certain members of her family...

Luckily, he stopped to catch his breath. Nevermore was tempted to leave, but with a sigh she decided she should better say something, in case he started running that way again. Staying by the river she walked towards him.

"You're getting too close to our pack borders, you know. You should really turn and go back where you came from."

The voice broke the tense night silence quickly for him and, guzzling down river water as he was at the time, it was with a choking gasp and an impressive leap that cleared all four of his paws cleanly from the ground for a brief time that Adriel greeted this strange pup; somehow, his face seemed even more pale, more drained of color than usual. Everything made him jumpy lately. "P-p-p-p-pack?" the pup sputtered, the fur patterned like eyebrows drawn back and up with anxiety. Oh dear, oh dear, he was about to trespass again! but it was so hard not to accidently do that these days, with so many packs around and none he could will the guts to walk towards and plead asylum.

"Not again . . ." Adriel winced. He had no sense of direction as it was. "Wh-what if I don't kn-kn-know where I came f-f-f-f-from?"
PostPosted: Fri Mar 06, 2009 5:20 pm

Even though the mask on his face made him look mischievous, or sly, or any other personality word along those lines when his eyebrows weren't up in panic, he really didn't seem like the type that would be out alone to cause trouble. That, and he was scared silly just by hearing her voice. Nevermore raised a brow at him, droplets drizzling down from his jump and onto her face.

"Don't be scared of me," she said with a sigh, sitting back and closed her eyes. "I wont eat you. Though, I wouldn't put it past some of my family members." She ended the sentence with a loud and bitter laugh. "We're all crazies over here."

Then she shook her head at him. "I don't care if you know where you came from. I just suggest you go the exact opposite way you were going." She wiped her face with a paw.

Why did people have to do that to his nerves? Say something as harmless as "I won't eat you" and then go on kindly to add that their family probably wouldn't mind dining on his innards at the same time? Adriel gulped. Yet he attempted to rationalize himself into calming down: she wasn't about to attack him, it looked, and she had the courtesy to warn him about territories, so he had to be at least a little grateful. Maybe she could help point him out to a pack that wouldn't mind taking him in? "Maybe I m-m-might . . . Why crazy?" the pup asked, trying to restrain the quivering tone as best he could seeing as he was helpless to the shaking his legs were caught up in. "S-Something in the water?"
PostPosted: Sat Mar 07, 2009 8:51 am

"Why crazy?" With those words Never completely cracked up. She couldn't help it; there was something indefinitely wrong in her family, a core sickness everyone shared, though in some it was much more noticeable than in others. Her own mother let herself be governed by a voice she couldn't see, a voice in raven form.

She couldn't remember a time that she when she laughed so hard. Never was probably the right word. It was always the right word, when it came to her life. She wiped away tears - were they from laughing, or from her bitter misery? - and stared straight at Adriel, a dead serious look in her eyes. "No, something in the blood. We hear voices. We do unspeakable things, even to others sharing this blood. And it's completely normal in this pack. No place for someone who wasn't born here, or brought here through some deep dark fate." Her voice ended with a growl, trailing off into a silence.

"Neee . . ." The harsh tone of her laughter elicited some nervous wiggling and, surprisingly, a little bit of empathy beyond the absolute fear he was usually held in. Someone as young as a pup shouldn't have sounded so dark as this one, even though it wasn't at all out of Adriel's grasp of imagination to believe in the stark insanity some wolves had. Maybe crazy could be tracked through family trees like a gene?

"I'mn s-s-sorry. Wh-what's the pack's name?" he asked timidly, hoping to get off the subject of mentally disturbed wolves. He didn't need more fuel for his paranoid mind to think that his own family had possibly gone insane, that it would explain why they had left him all alone like this. Did that count as a "deep dark fate"? He was tired of always being on the run.

Nevermore snatched the change of subject readily. Nobody wanted to hear any more about the insanity that run amok in the pack, and surely it wasn't having a good effect on this impressionable fellow-pup. For a moment she felt a pang of jealousy. He was free, and she was not. Perhaps she should've let him stumble into the packlands after all.

"Agua Azul," she spat, glaring back over her shoulder whence she came. "Actually, we could be seen talking here. Let's keep going." The dark-pelted, dark-minded female got up and began padding along the riverbank, farther and farther away from the pack border. She knew she was taking a great risk, but at that moment, she didn't care.

"So why are you out here, exactly?"

Timidly he padded with her, caught between letting her lead or sticking as close as possible without being called out on a so-called action called "copping a feel"; or at least, he heard some gruff male once say it when he bumped into him. And then he mentioned something about being "a freakin' gaytard", but Adriel had no idea what that meant either; though the way it sounded, it wasn't pretty. The fact that this pup even said aloud that they could be being watched even now set his frayed nerves back into overdrive, and with a soft whine he kept up.

"N-Nothing exact," Adriel responded, clear eyes darting over his shoulder for quick looks in case he caught sight of the so-called eavesdropper. "I've always been r-r-running ever since my m-mom and and dad and b-brother left me. Th-there's always something chasing me, too, and I can't ever find it! Neeeeeee." He drew out a long whine, ducking his head. "I'm s-sorry, I didn't introduce myself either. I'm A-Adriel."
PostPosted: Sun Mar 15, 2009 8:46 am

Adriel's fearful little whine didn't go unnoticed by Nevermore. She rolled her eyes and kept on going. Sure, she was weak and small even for a pup her age, but at least she wasn't scared silly all of the time. Danger was a part of life, and life was often out of one's control. Why waste energy being afraid all of the time? Anyone that fearful wouldn't last long in her pack. She could just imagine what kind of hell someone like that would be put through. It was all the more reason to keep going.

"Oh stop it," she snapped, her mood being pushed over the fence into the realm of irritability when he whined a second time. "Why would something follow you? You aren't exactly the most tasty looking morsel in the world, heheh." With that she seemed to calm down a bit, but something still simmered under the surface. "The name's Nevermore, unfortunately. Never for short."

Suddenly a scent came to her, carried by the breeze following the water. She sniffed, picking out the direction it was coming from. It smelled like feathers and something she couldn't recognize, and it was drifting down from a tree up ahead. Finally Never stopped, but with a paw raised, ready to continue on. "What is that?"

Adriel winced at the reprimand and clamped his mouth shut, though his limbs continued to quiver regardless for a few moments afterwards. He was with someone who seemed to know what she was doing, right? That meant he was safer, right? She would know when and where things would go bump in the night and be able to stop them, right? Maybe she was only a pup, but she definitely appeared confident. He relaxed a little.

"Oh, w-well hi then, Nevermore or Never," he chirped politely as she paused to start sniffing at something, his stiffened tail beginning to fall casually between his legs rather than nearly curled with tension. "I'm Adriel, but I dun think you can make it much shor-"

And then her paw was raised and Adriel shut up once more. At her query, he inhaled quietly through his nose, slowly picking up the scent of feathers and something else he couldn't identify at the time. "Er . . . not sure. Food?" he whispered to her, clear eyes tilting this way and that for signs. Feathers meant birds, right? He coudl use a meal right about then.

"Well then Adriel, your guess is as good as mine," Nevermore said casually, stepping forward on her paw and swinging around to look at him. "Why don't you go see? Maybe we'll be rewarded," she said. It was her roundabout way of daring him to go over there.

The pup walked a little closer, following the scent to a very tall, bushy pine tree. She peered into the needles but it was much too dark for her eyes to make out anything up there. "Or are you too scared to check it out? All you'd have to do is go over to the trunk, and look up." Nevermore, smirked, waiting for Adriel to do something. She was pretty sure it was safe. It was probably some kind of bird, and as far as she knew birds were harmless. Perhaps a little annoying in the case of the sparrow that stalked her from the shadows, but harmless.

"Eee . . ." He shifted from paw to paw several times with some apprehension. Adrieal was definitely not one to venture forth into the darkness willingly, and it was written all over his pale little face that was drawn with lines of anxiety. "I dunno . . . What if the thing's l-larger than a bird and it only just ate one, and that's wh-why we smell feathers?" he asked Nevermore, glancing at the she-pup. He was scared, not stupid: he'd learned very quickly to avoid poking his nose into the unknown when possible. Yet here Nevermore stood without too much of a care it seemed; maybe he was just overreacting again?

Adrieal took a breath. "Okay, okay . . ." Quietly he inched forward towards the tall pine tree, keeping his head ducked until he was almost a tail-length away. Unable to pierce through the dark canopy for the source of the scent, he placed a tentative paw upon the thick trunk, attempting to pull himself up further than he could on two legs, and squinted skywards to see if he would in fact be "rewarded" as this weird girl put it.

Nevermore just looked at him expectantly. "Then we'd smell that thing too, no? All I smell is a strange bird." It was uncertain whether it was in her genes or just an aspect of herself, but Never was not the least bit afraid of the dark. She almost preferred the darkness to the daytime, as it was. It was foolish to be so bold when one was so small, yet she didn't seem to care.

She watched closely as Adrieal inched towards the pine tree. Well, so far so good. He even dared to touch the tree trunk and look up. Admittedly, she wanted to have a look too. Never padded over to him, an uncharacteristic grin on her face. "Well that wasn't so bad-"

She was suddenly caught off guard as something gave a harsh call. 6 feet of wing feathers shifted as the bird stirred, irritated that something had disturbed it's slumber. Never froze, her eyes locked into the darkness above. "Umm, Adrieal, I think maybe we should go..."

After all, pups makes good meals for hungry eagles.

For all his whining and stammers and inclinations to quick escape when on high-alert (which meant his normal status), Adrieal budged not one inch when his eyes were met by the two wide orbs glaring down at him from the tree branch. He was the picturesque pose of a deer in the headlights, vacantly staring up in silent horror. An eagle! An eagle? AN EAGLE?! He screamed these thoughts in his mind but no one slipped past the mental barrier to be uttered upon his lips.

Adrieal knew he shouldn't have listened, shouldn't have so much as taken one pawstep towards the tree. And now he'd awaken one particularly feather-ruffled raptor. As if suddenly awakening from a trance set on by the bird, the pup almost imperceptibly began to inch back, his paw barely making a sound as it slide down the trunk and towards the ground. Maybe it wouldn't see him if he moved slowly enough since it might still be sleepy and it was dark outs- BUT HE HAD A PALE FACE! OF COURSE IT COULD SEE HIM!

So much for the sneaky method. Panic overrode his senses like a flood.

"RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN!" yelped the pup, whipping around and bolting past Nevermore, tail tucked between his legs as he made for the river.
