Death Witch had wandered off on his own today, tired of trying to fight his brother for attention. He wasn't scared of the forest, it was just trees and moss...and dead leaves. He knew there was a stream near by that ran through a clearing. His mother had taken him there before.
The foal looked at some of the bushes as he walked by them, wondering a little if the berries were good. He couldn't remember which were safe...best to stick to the grass near the stream.
He walked into the clearing and looked around, blinking a little at the light from the setting sun. It was darker in the trees surrounding the clearing, and darker back where his mother and brother were. DW sighed and ventured out a little, looking down at the water.
The foal glanced around before leaning down to take a drink, muttering to himself, "Hope nothing big comes through...."

Night was falling around Aislinn and her family, the setting sun sending shadows dancing across the land. He siblings and her parents had already gone to bed and were lost deep in slumber. But not Linn. Linn was wide awake, filled with energy and wanting to play. But it was night time, and if she were to wake one of her siblings they would surely get into trouble from the ruckus they would cause. So, alone, Linn set off to explore the night and her surroundings, following the stream her family had chosen to sleep by. Water was a wondrous thing. It moved and babbled like a living being, yet it had no consciousness of it's own. It was a marvel in Linn's eyes. She followed the winding stream for several minutes, taking in the scenery as she did so. It was dark indeed now, the sun and it's golden rays quickly retreating from the sky. It mad it hard for Linn to find her footing. On more than one occasion a hoof or two slipped into the ice water, sending a shiver up Linn's spine. Just when she though it would be better to turn back than to continue forward the trees gave way to a small clearing. She hadn't noticed the foal drinking at the waters edge not too far up the stream from her. She had simply glanced at the stream when the trees opened up, mistaking the foal as shadows cast by the grass. He did blend well after all with his surroundings with the coming darkness. With a sigh of relief she leaped into the grass of the clearing, giggling and prancing as she played by herself.

DW looked up at the sound, ears flicking back and forth slightly. He saw the foal jumping about, he dark coat contrasting around the sunset lit clearing. He wondered who she was, and where had she come from....
And could he get her attention?
"Hey!" DW called out, stepping cautiously into the light. He looked at the foal, stepping in place. He was ready to bolt if he had to, his wings flicking with excitement. "You're going to fall in if you're not careful..."

Linn stopped suddenly, startled by the sound of another voice. She stumbled a bit but kept her footing, her ears twitching madly as she scanned her surroundings for danger. The fluttering of wings caught her attention; and it was only then that she realized what she once believed to be shadows was actually a foal! "Oh!" She exclaimed. "Hi! I didnt see you there!" She relaxed a bit; it hadn't been one of the bad creatures her mother had told her about. She made her way over to the foal, feeling a bit embarrassed at not seeing him earlier. "I didnt bother you, did I?"

DW shook his head, looking the foal over, "Nuh-uh...I was just getting a drink. What are you doing here?"
He stepped to the side, walking around her. He scrunched his nose in curiosity, "You look like the night."

She was a bit relieved that she hadn't bothered the foal. "I was bored... My family's asleep and I wanted to play, so I went exploring." She paused as he circled her, commenting on her colors. "And you look like shadows yourself. At first I hadn't seen you, you blended so well with them when I came into the clearing."

"That's sort of the point," DW told the foal, pausing in his circling. He looked at her, tilting his head. "Are you supposed to hide in the night time too? My daddy says we're noc..nocturtle."
He flicked his tail, then walked over to the stream for a drink. He glanced up at her, "I went exploring too...my brother is in the way of getting attention from mommy. Daddy is off doing...daddy stuff..."

"I..." She had never been asked a question like this before. Was she intended to hide in the shadows of the night? Her pelt, swirled with different shades of black, suggested so. "I don't know if I am, what you call, nocturnal. Zoom and mommy I don't think are, but then again they don't look like me..." Linn trailed off as the foal went to the streams edge.
Linn followed the foal to the stream. "Daddy stuff?"

"You know, flying and making sure Mommy and Thackery and me are safe," DW told the foal, looking at her and tilting his head. "Doesn't your daddy do...daddy stuff?"
He shrugged slightly, then shook his mane out. "You'd be good at nocturnal....cause you can hide in the dark. Probably better than me...cause your coat's so dark."
"Who's Zoom?" the foal blinked, not knowing what a 'zoom' was. Maybe this girl...he was sure she was a girl from her voice...she was interesting. "I've never heard of a zoom. Is it a what or a who?"

Linn honestly didnt know if Daddy Danuwa did daddy stuff. She knew he flew, and she assumed that he protected her and her family, but he never left her mommy or her or her siblings. He never 'left' to go do daddy stuff. "I think daddy does, but I dont know for sure..."
She swished her tail idly as she listened to the foal, listened to his comments about her being good at being nocturnal. She still didnt know fully what that was. "Do you really think so?" Maybe that was why she was black and the others weren't. Maybe she was susposed to be 'nocturnal'!
She chuckled a bit though at the foal asking what a 'Zoom' was. "Zoom is a nickname; it stands for Zoomba! He's my brother. He's kinda weird if you ask me; but then I'm probably weird compared to my family." She paused for a moment, thinking. "Both me and Zoom have nicknames, come to think about it... Dont you have a nickname?"

"I think so...why else would you be up at night while your family is asleep?" DW asked her, tilting his head. He glanced around then back at the foal. "That's what it is...being awake at night, instead of the day. Mommy told me. She said her and Daddy are moth flutters...and so are me and Thackery, my dumb brother. Moths like the night, and are nocturtle...turnal..."
He wandered to a tree that had strange mushrooms growing on the side. He sniffed them slightly, then looked at her. "Daddy protects us, and teaches us to fly. He gets food when it's far off...like apples. Apples don't grow in the darker places in the trees. He also gets mushrooms and moss from high up. Mommy watches us and helps us learn to fly, too."
The foal turned and nibbled at the mushrooms, thinking about what she'd asked. He looked at her again, slurping one of the mushrooms in his mouth. He nodded a little. "Like a short name? My brother calls me 'DW'. I think my brother is dumb...and he hogs the attention. So, maybe we all have weird brothers and sisters in our families?"
"Why would you be weird, anyway?" DW asked, pawing at the moss under the tree and looking at it.

"But..." Linn thought on the foal's words once more. "If you're only awake at night, then you dont get to see all the pretty flowers, butterflys, and other things of the day.... I think I'd miss them if I was Noct... Noctual... Notunal..." She gave up on the word. "If I were to only be awake at night."
Danuwa didn't need to get food for her and her family, there always was grass around in the open fields. And none of her siblings had wings, so Daddy couldn't teach her or them to fly. Maybe all that her daddy could do was protect them.
DW... What an odd nickname? "Why does he call you DW? Does it stand for something? My name is Aislinn, but my family just calls me Linn... It's just the last half of my name."
Then the conversation turned to her being different. Why had she mentioned it? She didnt want to place her troubles on someone else. "I just... Look and act different than them, I guess... "

"I see flowers and moths are just as pretty as butterflies. I saw some once when I stayed up too long," He told her around mouthful of moss. He swallowed it and smacked his lips a little. "There's stars and the moon....I'd miss those during the day time. I'd really miss seeing the moon flowers. They taste good."
"It's short for my name....Death Witch." DW blinked at her, hadn't he told her his name? Maybe he forgot. He looked at her, digging idly with his hoof at the moss. "Aislinn...Aislinn....Linn....it's a pretty name."
He leaned down and grabbed another mouthful of moss. He chewed on it when she talked about being different. He made a face, then spit the moss out. He laughed a little at the foal. "Everyone is different, and acts different than their family. It's called...um...Mommy told me...special. Yeah, unique and special. Besides, I don't think you look weird. I look weird compared to you...I got wings and funny eyes."
